Orienteering (bicycle) 2:33:43 [3] 30.36 mi (5:04 / mi) +879m 4:39 / mi

Gig Harbor Street Scramble, 3hr bike. Had a good battle with Nikolay; officially I won, but only because he forgot to circle one answer. In reality he finished about 4min before me, clearing the course in ~2:29 to my ~2:33. As it happened we planned similar clockwise loops and were more-or-less together for the last hour or so (he caught up while I was bumbling around at the weird/incorrect checkpoint - 45 I think, though I've lost my map), which was fun because it's rare that you get to race head-to-head in a street scramble.

I was a minute or two ahead on the three out-and-back legs east of the harbor, which meant that we kept passing each other as I was coming back from each checkpoint and he was heading out to it, but when we swung back around toward the finish it turned out he took a more efficient route on an earlier leg and picked up two additional checkpoints that I had to tack on near the end, which gave him the winning margin. In general we seemed to be going about the same overall speed; Nikolay is the stronger cyclist, but I was at times taking checkpoints/answering questions more efficiently.

I was feeling morose and pessimistic about things in general today, then I realized maybe it's because I haven't done any real physical activity in several days. Sure enough, I felt much better and energetic after a wee run around Woodland Park. I guess this means I'm addicted to exercise? Suppose if you have to be addicted to something, it's one of the better choices.

Note

A somewhat underwhelming turnout at Robinswood Park this evening, but we did have a celebrity attendee.

Finally have a chance to write a little about Sage Stomp. The Long was a pretty decent run; my only real mistake was 90s at 13. I also lost 30s at 1 due to the flag being mildly mishung (at the wrong corner of the open area) and took suboptimal routes on the long legs 2-3 and 5-6. On 3 I meant to head basically straight but ended up veering off right and had to correct past the pond by the fence, while on 6 I went right around the big hill when left appeared to have been quicker. Though I was displeased to see the Bonesaw 2min behind me in the start list, I did not see him until my error at 13. We were then together until halfway to 17, when we diverged and he took a better route and thus finished ~40s ahead. I have progressed to the point where I can run with the Bonesaw for 65-70min, but after that my lack of distance training and his superior endurance become apparent.

Cascade podium sweep, sorry Canadians :)
