Have arrived in Sweden. The airports are crawling with Olympians right now; on my flight from Amsterdam to Gothenburg was a Dutch woman decked out in TeamNL Rio 2016 gear. After a little covert sleuthing, I was able to positively identify her as Ellen van Dijk, who just finished fourth in the Road Time Trial, missing a medal by some 11 seconds. Reason(s) for coming to Gothenburg unknown.
In the Frankfurt airport, my sister and her husband saw an unidentified Chinese team, as well as what appeared to be the Georgian boxing team, complete with lots of cauliflower ear.
Off to Sweden tomorrow! I have now climbed to the top of my goals pyramid; it has taken approximately 3.5 years. Early on I never thought I would make it this far, so just want to say thanks to everyone who has been a teammate, clubmate, training organizer, training partner, competitor, supporter, critique-er, log reader, or friend. Every one of you has helped me along the way.
It seems crazy to me that the Canadians have their trials immediately in front of WOC. It makes sense that they take place in Europe, given the dynamics of the team, but surely a mere week-plus is not optimal for recovery. And what if someone turns an ankle or bangs a knee or whatever?
Lost a little time on the way to 13 at a trail junction that's mapped a little weird (what fool mapped this place anyway??); also some time on 14 because I had drawn the 2016 course onto a map that already had the 2015 course and I absentmindedly began navigating to one of the 2015 controls.
