Orienteering race 3:28:37 [4] *** 6.7 km (31:08 / km) +350m 24:41 / km
spiked:8/10c shoes: INOV8 Bare Grips

Extra-long national champs at Pacheco Pass, California. Saw a control at one that was on another course, and then saw the correct one about 40 m away. Did lots of panting, using my inhaler, and short stops to rest on the many uphills.

The big problem was control 7. I didn't keep track of the many reentrants, and thought I had the correct one with lots of vegetation two controls early. Went up and down the reentrant, realized I hadn't gone far enough, and kept going north. Knew the next one wasn't right--not enough vegetation, then on to the next. Walked all the way down the hill without finding the control, saw the fence, knew it was right, and had to climb all the way back up. Lots of impassible (to me) stuff on the way to eight, so I had to work my way around, but no problems after that, except for being tired.

Very physically intense, but I felt really good about completing it. Now I need to work more on my training.

Orienteering race 44:02 [4] *** 2.0 km (22:01 / km) +150m 16:01 / km
spiked:9/9c shoes: INOV8 Bare Grips

Middle distance Brown at Pacheco State Park. I don't think I looked at my compass during this event., after finding the first control. Mostly I just stayed low when possible and ran up the reentrants. Occasionally I ran up a hill and over to another reentrant. Felt really good, except for having to use my inhaler on the way to the first control. I ended up getting the gold for my age group. The best thing about this, is that I think if I get serious about my training again, I can do better.
