Orienteering race 2:59:32 [4] ** 13.69 km (13:07 / km) +288m 11:52 / km

Adventure race at Ft. Leavenworth. I messed up on my second control, #4, which was down a spur. The map is not too good, so it shows it as being in the open, but it was tucked into the woods, and I probably lost about 5 minutes. No problems, and I was happy with my route choices, until I got to #15. It was up a steep hill in the woods, and there are no details on the map, so I was guessing a lot. I knew I was in the right area when I saw a post that said, Ft. Sully, so I wandered along the hill top and finally found it. No more problems after that, except for being a long slog, with several doglegs. After I got the last control, I noticed that I only had about six minutes, so after climbing back up the hill, I ran the rest of the way in and just made the cutoff. Yeah for me! This was lots of fun, and there was some navigation practice also, which I also need.

Really got me going today. Then I met up with Mary Ann, and we had a girls' day out--massage, lunch, shopping at Trader Joe's.

A challenging workout today, which included a lot of balance.

Dog Walking 45:56 [2] 4.15 km (11:04 / km) +34m 10:38 / km

I had to make a trip to Excelsior Springs, so Elray and I stopped at Watkins Mill on the way home. I made her keep up a good pace. She needed the exercise, we have raced down the driveway early this morning. I also got some strength training in, when she made several lunges into the water at the boat ramp.

Dog Walking 20:00 [2]
shoes: INOV-8 Trail Talon 225

An odd day. No 9Round. Bob had an upper GI procedure that required anesthesia, so we were in Liberty before dawn's early light--about 0630, which meant that I walked Elray this morning in the dark. The designated driver, that would be me, was required to stay there and then sign off on the drive home. It took him quite a while to come out from under, but he said he really felt wonderful--best sleep in a long time. Then we went to breakfast, I went shopping, and when we finally got home, Elray needed to go out again.

We went to Jesse James, but I was charging my fenix and don't know how far, but probably about 1.4 km. Back to the usual routine tomorrow.

This came close to being a 5. Some taxing moves.

I thought it might be cool enough to do a bit of running, but Elray thought the weather was perfect for sniffing. We parked at Mack Porter, took the bridge to Jesse James, and walked the east loop and back.

Workout 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: INOV-8 Trail Talon 225

Workout with my trainer. A good training session. Most of the upper body stuff was done with a balance component or with heavier (20 lb) dumbbells. I also did some speed and agility stuff, and five 100-meter rows on the rowing machine with recovery breaks in between.

Today's CHOW was easier than usual--total number of hits on the speed bag. I alternated hands with sets of 20, and got 410.

Worked on my errors and omissions. I actually found parking places today. Took a lot of stairs, which was pretty aerobic.

Note

Bob has been reworking his boat that he got in college. It's been over a year now, and the last time he tried it out, it leaked. So he worked on it some more, and Elray and I went to Watkins Mill with him to try it out. I helped launch, then Elray and I had about a 20-minute walk. He hadn't shown up by the next open beach area, so we went back, and I helped him reload onto the trailer. There is now a new leak, so he is back to the drawing board. And we got back home in time for him to see the Chiefs play.
