Note

Pouring rain which pounding. We went out to Needle Vista, and I decided a rest day was in order. I figured the washes would be full of water, and I didn't want to get me and all my gear wet before packing for the trip home. So we visited the library a d I'm washing enough clothes to get home, while resting.

Day 7 of SWSW. A Score-O type event at Tucson Mountain Park. I did not do well on this one, and got some prickly pear buds stuck in my Falters. Ouch. Map cases are good for taking them out.

Sprint training at the Univ of Arizona. First we did a corridor map for a warm-up, then the sprint. The total time includes both maps, but the first one took about 32min. and the Sprint about an hour. We did both as a group effort and it was lots of fun.

Rest day for SWSW. Bob and I went to the Boyce Thompsum arboreteum. We had been here a really long time ago. Now it is a state park. We wandered around looking at cacti, etc., then walked the Picketpost Trail. We took the hot sunny part first, and finished on the cooler, shady side.

Street-o in Bisbee. We had to choose the correct descriptions for the control circles. We were using an aerial map, and some of the numbers and circles were hard to read in the purple. Amy and I walked around, enjoyed seeing the town, visited with people we knew, and tried to avoid climbing steep hills. We did climb up and down lots of stairs, and found 12 of the 21.

Then Bob and I tried to revisit Ramsey Canyon Preserve---at least 15 years since we were there, but it was closed on Tues.

Cholla Chaser. Really fun. We started out with boxed controls, and you had to choose from 1 to 7, Score-O style, then we had seven regular point to points that everyone did. I was good with my route choices, except for the first control. I started out going up the wash, but EVERYONE else was going up the hill, so I followed. Then I had to go down the hill, very slowly. I came back down the wash and it was 6-7 minutes faster. After that, my route choices were really good. This was fun.

After lunch, Bob and I went to the west section of Saguaro National Park, and walked two short trails, after viewing the exhibits in the Visitor Center.

Catalina Classic at Catalina State Park. I did really badly today, on a venue totally different from any thing I had done before. Lots of rocks and more than lots of spiny things. Very difficult to read the terrain and my contact had slipped out of place so I couldn't really see this very technical map. I got 1 ok, and spent almost an hour finding 2. Then I got to do a bunch of almost vertical rock climbing on the way to 3, which I never did find. I did find 4 and found 5 easily--and it was a water stop. By this time, I was too tired to go back to 3, and because of parking issues, I hadn't had my candy bar or brought my Clifblocks, so I gave up and came in. I did learn a lot from this experience.
