Note

There are so many things to take away from my first O-Ringen. Racing wise things didn't go so well overall, but sections were promising and stupid mistakes let me down where I did something wrong and 'lost' concentration. Hesitation and a lack of confidence may have played a part; distraction in an area jammed with controls and runners but I think its my switching off in the control circle by not having a strong enough plan that is the problem. I interpreted the terrain well and navigated well for the majority of these races but consistently made stupid mistakes in control circles (at least one everyday). Hopefully Trossachs will help sort this. (Ended up with a cancelled flight and making it back just in time!) Fab week and heaps of experience.

Day 5 6km

Was aiming for a solid final run but sloppy errors cost me again. 1, good route choice but hesitant and unconfident in the circle. 4 had to bounce back of the wall, hit it well from there. 6, everything just looked so indistinct. Faff followed and then I led a train of us into the control. More relocation work needed. 7 and 8 were the best legs on the course. Smooth and fast. 9, pulled into a train that didn't have a clue, I knew I shouldn't but just didn't respond. Again, a relatively simple control that I faffed about on. Need to stop switching off and plan clearly. Fab run in too.

Day 4 5.5km

Quite sloppy really. Poor route choice to 3. Slow in the messy stuff and drifted right but then used the paths to bring me to the wall and then cocked up in the circle in the mix with dark green. 7 just got distracted with another control, stupid really. Then 9. Simple leg and stupidly dived in without any thought. Should of done a rough bearing. Gutting again. Stupid mistakes costing significant time.

Day 3 4.1km

Best day of the week by a long way. Felt like I could actually run hard in the dunes. Pretty fast and fluid throughout. 4 I went to the wrong bush first, probably lost 5 - 10 seconds. 9 just overshot, had to shoot back down the hill. Poor visualisation here. Then the relatively big one; 12 to 13, hit 14 when trying to contour around. Short distance apart so not disastrous but very sloppy. Slightly hesitant in the crowds coming into 15 but solid. Very enjoyable.

Lost it on 1. Massive error; just couldn't match terrain to map. I just didn't pick up the small re-entrant and again was poor at relocating. Seems to be a reoccurring problem. Clean from there on in. Bucked up and loved it out in the forest. Still annoying!!

H16 5.6km

Not too much detail on these due to time. Solid into 1, bashed my head on a root going to 2 which may have had an impact on my dodgy route choice having no clear attack point and relocating poorly. Clean through to 7 where I mistook the green; coming in too early and faffing. Maybe could have gone straighter to 8 and came out of the control crazily having to contour round. Disappointing but good fun. Training before hand would have helped but should have performed better navigationally.
