Orienteering 1:55:18 [3] 4.59 mi (25:07 / mi)
ahr:139 max:173 14c weight:215lbs shoes: Inov-8 OROC 340

The two-hour course at the annual ICO score event at Eagle Creek West. I managed to grab 14 controls at what was generally a hiking pace. Controls were: 2-5-8-7-13-12-11-16-17-15-10-9-6-1.

Interesting test drive of the Active Ankle Volt brace on my right ankle today. It definitely did its job. It wasn’t completely invisible in terms of comfort, but it did nothing to hamper my concentration or pace (such as it was). There were two areas of mild discomfort, but no hot spots or blisters. I don’t think the “stirrup” section of the brace fits completely level flat in the bottom of the shoe, due to a narrow heel, which was one of the areas of discomfort after a while. I’ll be interested to see how the PSB performs in this area. I even used the right foot as my lead foot while descending some ridges, and it seemed very stable.

I haven’t orienteered in snow in a very long time. An OLOU meet at Deam Lake way back in ’02/’03 comes to mind. Very fun once you get moving and get the core warmed up. Stunning view of the water at the cliff-top near control #8, where I also looked down to see a guy very slowly crossing that wide ice on foot. Definitely some nerves of steel on that dude. Also saw at least 8 young deer in the shallow valley between #10 and 65th Street (as well as a loud black dog chasing one or two of them around).

I did the first hour as a straight hike, finding myself tentative on the new brace. At the 1-hour point, I wanted to make sure I got back in time, so I jogged in between the controls a bit more. I had maybe 20 mins remaining after finding #6, so I rolled the dice and swung out to grab #1 before heading in (I copped out and ran Fishback Road to get there, but then went through the woods to the south to get back to the soccer fields).

The studs on the OROCs definitely made short work of the cliff at #11. There were a string of people in a chain above and below the bag when I got there, like tentative wall climbers trying to figure out a new route. Lots of slipping and sliding. I dug in each step extra hard, and walked up the face with no sliding.

Running (treadmill) 40:00 [3] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
ahr:154 max:176 weight:216lbs shoes: Nike Dart 9

This would normally have been an after-work trail run, but due to the continued cold, the snow isn’t melting in Indy, and since nobody else uses that outdoor jogging trail at work, the snow would be untouched. I know I need to test drive that ankle brace, but I’m not interested in running blind on a trail, unable to assess where I’m putting my feet.

Starting to move again after a somewhat unintentional week off. Routines are all messed up around here with the kids out of school and me off work. I go back on Wednesday, and kids go back the following Monday.

The PSB brace still has not arrived, but I have also purchased the Active Ankle Volt brace locally. I’ll alternate between them on my outdoor running, to compare and contrast.
