Orienteering race 1:21:32 [2] 2.07 mi (39:24 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 340

Yellow course at Camp Ransburg, last day of the 2013 Flying Pig. I was shadowing Joshua from a distance most of the time, and consulting on errors. Joshua made more mistakes today, since I wasn't "hovering" as much (at his request!), but I think he's learning and he still had fun. so that's good news.

This was quite an unexpected weekend. I took the kids to several meets when they were younger, which they generally seemed to enjoy, but it never really "stuck". Which is fine - I don't expect them to share my every interest. So it was pretty surprising now for Joshua to want to head out on two courses in the same weekend.

To be fair, he can be a bit flighty, and perhaps everything will change by next weekend. But I know I'll never forget the sight of him trotting away from the Ransburg start area, by himself, hunched over a map, so determined. I hope it's not the last time I get to see him do that, but I'm very grateful that I got to see it once.

Orienteering race 2:19:40 [2] 2.9 mi (48:10 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 340

Did the recreational yellow course with Joshua today at the Flying Pig (Dubois Ridge/Yellowwood). Joshua made most of the navigational choices, with me consulting.

Joshua says he’d like to start going to meets this year, and seemed to have a great time today. He was excited to see other “kids” orienteering, and seeing so many people at one meet seemed to impress him too.

It was neat to see him huddle up around a picnic table and talk about the yellow course, and he also introduced himself to Aidan M., who he must have heard me mention in the past.

He has asked to do the yellow at Ransburg tomorrow, so we’ll see how it goes!

Walking (street) 22:44 [1] 1.4 mi (16:14 / mi)
shoes: Nike Dart 9

IU campus, Bloomington. Brisk walk to retrieve two metal orienteering signs after the Flying Pig sprint. Worked the start line for the sprint, which was a lot of fun. Lots of names/faces that I haven’t seen in a long time.
