Mapping (Scouting ) 1:00:00 [0]

Map walk/run at 1:5000 at Starkey Hills North with Dad...planning for O-Cup race on February 26. Gorgeous out with a smattering of snow on the ground.

Carefully planned a course beforehand using 'Gator Bones' as the handicap box. Course seemed to hold up pretty well out there.

20ish years ago I held my first orienteering race using the 1:15000 Starkey Hills (north/south) map, circa 1985. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first year of the THOMASS series, which has now morphed into the O-Cup. Pretty cool to be part of planning a similar race this year.

The heavenly terrain on the tops of the 'canyon', with its hummocky topography and lovely open mixed forest are still a joy to navigate through. Generally the forest speed has stayed the same with only a few areas of undergrowth and/or downed trees. It's not bleached white forest...call it off white. Nobody will really be running with a tonne of pace anyway, as there's some tricky hill climbs/descents to deal with...along with the high probability of getting lost. Straight up.

The northeast Scottish-looking rough open land has morphed into southwest Manitoban terrain - probably with less visibility. (I've seen maps around Carberry and Hartney, but never orienteered there). With some deft mapping of vegetation, it should be some interesting orienteering - albeit a tough slog.

The only real disappointment is the bland open coniferous to the northwest. Logging is kicking the shit out of the plantation and is generally making a mess of things. Still, there are a couple areas that the idiots haven't got to yet. (Crossing fingers that they don't by February as they were active today.)

Excited to map and plan this mofo out!! Maybe add on a day and a half of training/racing at some other areas and call it an informal training weekend. (Attract Ottawa crew, northeast US).

Orienteering race (Adventure running) 1:18:52 [4] 14.58 km (5:25 / km) +325m 4:52 / km

Great course at the Icebreaker Adventure Run at Chedoke.

Got b-slapped by the Grizz during the Killer K to start. Probably time to ante up on some hill training. My training in Toronto is too breezy...(I think I've said that before).

Had a mistake free west end and was pleased to catch up to the Grizz before the golf course.

Took the wrong route choice on the 'Chairlift', (along with a couple bobbles on the escarpment)...ended up behind the Grizz in the end, 1:05 behind.

Really should have stuck to my original game plan of doing the Chairlift after the Killer K, but was a bit of a lemming and stayed on the roads up top out to the west part of the course.

Looking at the map again, my original plan was the optimal choice.

Gotta trust my instincts...and fix my behaviour with other runners around. (A problem even when I was young.) Run so much smoother with no one else around.

All things considered...quite pleased.

Running (Warmup) 15:54 [2] 3.3 km (4:49 / km)

Running intervals (With cool down) 34:58 [5] 7.4 km (4:44 / km)

500 metre repeats with 500 metre recovery trot.

First speed work session in 20 years!!

Surgery knee didn't feel the greatest towards the end. I think I need to strengthen it a bit more before I up the frequency of my speed work.

Terrible form. Terrible pacing. Great sweat though. Very satisfying. Some serious crosswinds to deal with along the railpath today. Have to shorten my recovery time next time.
