Friday Feb 29

Skate skiing 2:40:00 [2]
Skied around the Lost Lk trails in the rain. The conditions were very fast and the main worry was avoiding ski touring types who chose to stop at the bottom of the hills for some reason. Pretty cold and a bit tired by the end. Quick trip to the hot tub really helped.

Thursday Feb 28

Alpine Skiing 1:00:00 [1]
Skied for five hours on Blackcomb with Josh - mostly chasing the sun on 7th Heaven but also some over on Jersey Cream. Don't know what aerobic training this is worth but I can say that my legs were cooked by the end of the day.

Wednesday Feb 27

Skate skiing 1:55:00 [3]25 km (4:36 / km)
ahr:140
Managed to get out to Callaghan Valley to tour the trails. Warmish weather and drizzling at +4C. Trails newly groomed and in great shape with a TON of snow around. Skied the red and blue 5k Olympic trails with Katarina while Wil watched Mia. Then did them again as well as the biathlon 4k loop as well as some other miscellaneous stuff. Beautiful forest, wide trails but still challenging downhills. Some tough climbs and, as Kata says, the olympians will have 'lots of opportunity to show their strength/power'.

Tuesday Feb 26

Skate skiing 1:00:00 [3]
Did a version of the 15k route as well as a trip along the Lost Lk loop. Then jogged over to Wildwood to meet up with Charlotte, Adrian, Wil, Kata and Martin Pardoe for lunch. Great day!
Note
Getting pretty tired what with the evening social activities and early morning wake-ups. Intended to go for an afternoon run but just ended up vegging out.

Monday Feb 25

Road running 15:00 [3]
Carpe diem run first thing in the morning as jetlagged Josh woke me up at 6:30am. Ran over to the Lost Lake trails to check out the conditions.
Skate skiing 1:15:00 [1]
Went for a relaxed ski with Wil and Adrian around the 15k loop used for the Loppet yesterday. This time might be a bit generous as we stopped for a few photo-ops and to gab for a while.
Skate skiing 1:30:00 [3]
After lunch, went around the 15k loop again and then did a few smaller loops including upper Panorama and ?Vimy Ridge. Conditions got a bit slushy by the end.

Sunday Feb 24

Core strength 15:00 [0]
Yoga routine - abbreviated version as this is a busy day.
Note
Worked all day then rushed home to pack for my trip to Whistler. Flew to Vancouver, arriving at 7:18pm and miraculously made the scheduled bus shuttle that left at 7:35pm. 12oz curls all the way up to Whistler. Sacked out after a slice at Fat Tony's.

Saturday Feb 23

Road running 40:00 [2]
Run to and from my early morning shift. Man, is it ever hard to run after being on your feet for 9 hours straight.

Friday Feb 22

Trail running intervals 1:05:00 [3]
Fartlek with the hounds up and around FFTW. Felt quite good and not too much hack afterwards.

Thursday Feb 21

Hockey intervals 55:00 [3]
The usual. Sloppy play in defensive zone.

Wednesday Feb 20

Trail running 1:03:00 [2]
ahr:131
Run up to FFTW lookoff and around Shane Lk with Regnly. Good running conditions.
Hockey 15:00 [1]
Getting on the skates again at the oval.

Tuesday Feb 19

Hockey 45:00 [1]
The start of my attempt to get into hockey shape for the tournament in a couple of weeks. Skating drills and some stickwork at the Oval.
Trail running 1:38:00 [2]
ahr:125
Run up to FFTW and around Swamp trail with Regnly. Good running. Felt reasonably good.

Monday Feb 18

Trail running 1:18:00 [3]
ahr:120
Run up to FFTW. Tough running. Pretty routine. Winter hack persists and I think I'll take it easy on the fast training this week.

Sunday Feb 17

Road running 1:01:00 [2]
ahr:120
Glorious morning in Vancouver. Ran down to ?Spanish Banks from the University and then back through some Endowment lands trail. Finished with some strides on the field next to the gym. Call it a road run although we were on trails a lot.
C • What happened to you on the weekend? 1

Saturday Feb 16

Road running 30:00 [2]
Easy jog in the early am with Anita before the course. Jogged down to NW Marine drive then a short stint back through the forest. Quite tight still. Stretched afterwards x 10'.

Friday Feb 15

Event: Vancouver Sprint Training Camp

Trail running 50:00 [2]
Modest run with Pat and Anita during our lunch break. Through Pacific Spirit Park in the light rain. Hamstrings and quads sore by the end.
Orienteering race 14:00 [4]
Sprint race at Acadia Residences after our course finished. Hamstrings very sore at the end. Ended up not pushing that hard. Henrik ran a very good time. I was in around Magnus and Geir but can't remember the exact results. Technically I think I only made one significant route choice error.
Road running warm up/down 11:00 [1]
Pitifully short warm-up/down considering how tight I was.

Thursday Feb 14

Classic skiing 1:35:00 [1]
Very easy ski with my valentine. Through the back yard, up to FFTW lookoff. Snowing... again.

Wednesday Feb 13

Snowshoe 1:55:00 [2]
I won't say it felt good but it didn't feel that bad either. Heavy, deep snow made the going tough on the uphills. Nice low impact though which was more important today.
Core strength (yoga) 15:00 [0]
Did a bunch of yoga in the evening with Anita. Also accumulated some core strength through the day.

Tuesday Feb 12

Core strength 10:00 [0]
Usual stuff. Too sore to do much else.
Swimming 30:00 [2]
Finally mustered up the gumption to go to the pool for an easy bit of pool running. After a hefty hot tub session, I managed to do 1/2 hour of arms only with a pull buoy.
Intended to take Regnly out for a snowshoe in our new snow but then it got warm and heavy and the excuses began to come very easily.

Monday Feb 11

Core strength 20:00 [0]
Way too sore to do anything active today. Limped around the house and did desk work. Accumulated some core strength and stretching to stave off boredom.

Sunday Feb 10

Multi-sport race race 2:00:00 [4]
PG Iceman: 8k ski / 10k run / 5k skate / 5k run / 800m swim
Not really sure about the time yet as the official results aren't up. Started off well on the ski and thought my pacing was okay but really cramped up on the oval and during the early part of the 5k. Loosened up a bit and ran almost normally for the last two km of the 5k. Swam the first 200m okay as well but then legs simply locked up. First the calves then the quads. Had to stop a couple of times and thought of pulling out. Swam the last 400m basically arms only. This is the second year in a row that I've had these devastating cramps. Not sure why as I've run harder for longer in the past without problems. I suspect it's partly due to not having done much fast skiing / skating that require a lot of specific strength and proprioception.

Saturday Feb 9

Skate skiing 45:00 [2]
Easy ski in the cold, blowing snow with Anita and Regnly. Iceman would be cancelled if held today. Calves a bit tight and I worry about them tomorrow. Last year the calves locked up immediately after stepping off the skis.

Friday Feb 8

Core strength 20:00 [0]
Easy AM workout before work.
Evening hours taken up with really good presentation by visiting ICU doc.

Thursday Feb 7

Trail running 25:00 [1]
Early morning jog with Regnly prior to work. Trying to stay active and cough at a minimum. I just may survive the week.

Wednesday Feb 6

Skate skiing 1:03:00 [3]
Moderate ski with Pat and the dogs, then put Regnly in the truck and did a loop of the Iceman ski trail. Intended to do one tour fast but, as always, ran into someone (John Hagen) and chatted / skied together for a while. Probably for the best as the cough was quite a bit worse again after.

Tuesday Feb 5

Trail running 42:00 [2]
Easy run with Regnly over towards Ginter, took in a bit of the Iceman 5k. Hack at end.
Swimming intervals 18:00 [4]
2x400m done back to back (15sec rest between) as per Iceman. Did them in 6:40 and 6:50 despite feeling much worse in the second 400m. Would be very happy to swim 13:30 on the weekend.

Monday Feb 4

Note
First looong day of a looong week in the office. Evening shot up by WIC shift. Good to have a rest though as cough quite bothersome still.

Sunday Feb 3

Track workout intervals 17:00 [4]
4x4:20 up at the track because it's -20C outside. I'm looking forward to Vancouver in a couple of weeks.
C • Van in a couple of weeks 1
Track workout warm up/down 29:00 [2]
Including the jog between reps.
Skate skiing 1:00:00 [3]
ahr:132
With SPD Turner and dogs. I'm starting to get bored of the dog trail. I hear that they're thinking of expanding it next year. Still awesome snow conditions and even the frostnip isn't so bad.

Saturday Feb 2

Skate skiing 1:30:00 [1]
Skied the dog trail x5 then outer loop of main trails. I was pretty cold by the end.

Friday Feb 1

Track workout intervals 16:00 [4]
Managed to sneak up to the track before heading to work. Usual 4x4' routine. I think I'm allergic to something there because I always start sneezing about an hour after I leave. Probably just the hard work...
Track workout warm up/down 21:00 [2]
Bowl of cereal didn't sit well during this workout.
Skate skiing 40:00 [1]
Again, sneaked out to the dog trail with Anita, after my work and before hers. Still cold but much better glide today. 4 laps.
Skate skiing 1:23:00 [3]
Pretty solid ski with Pat and the dogs. We did four laps then did an outer loop of the trails including Sawmill and Hickory Wing. Trails are in the best shape I've ever seen them in over the last 5 years.
