| Orienteering race 16:00 [5] | ||
| Spectator race. Felt crappy and ran crappier.
We were up 'early' to meet the JWOC team before they headed to the sprint as a couple of them needed their mesh tops that I was carrying. Then went to watch the sprint race. The spectator race started at 5pm and was a 'free' start every 30s. I thought I would try to get an early start but by the time I got to the start there were 30 guys in line. Ended up standing in line for 20 min before the start. Great warm-up. I'm now completely against these types of starts, especially for a sprint race. I wasn't prepared for how technical the race would be and was distracted a bit. Ended up making a few silly mistakes that probably cost a minute. I guess this is why I don't like to run sprint that much. Even with the minute back, I would have been 1:40 out of a gold medal...
| Trail running warm up/down 15:00 [1] | ||
| For above. | ||
Sunday Jun 29 | ||
| Event: JWOC 2008 | ||
| Note | ||
| Saw 2am again last night but felt this was necessary this time as it was our best and only chance to see the midnight sun this trip. Up early to go to the airport. Got to Oslo okay but then our Wideroe flight to Gothenburg was delayed, delayed again and again then finally cancelled at 8pm. They decided to put us on a bus. This left at 9:30pm and arrived at the bus station at 1:30am (8.5 hrs later than scheduled). After a gouging taxi ride, we arrived at 2am. I haven't had this many strings of 2am mornings in a long time. My only training was mental. | ||
Saturday Jun 28 | ||
| Note | ||
| Saw 2am again, feeling the first symptoms of sore throat and so decided against training today. | ||
Friday Jun 27 | ||
| Orienteering 1:05:00 [3] | ||
| Took a city bus out to the map: Storelva and ran the trim course there. Pretty similar to Bykle. Fun terrain, especially in the flatter, open areas with fine contour detail. Pretty tough running on the side hills and in the green, rocky areas. The marshes were better running and good for navigating. | ||
Thursday Jun 26 | ||
| Trail running intervals 18:00 [5] | ||
| 4x4.5' in the pouring rain up on the big hill above town. | ||
| Trail running warm up/down 34:00 [2] | ||
| For the above workout. | ||
Wednesday Jun 25 | ||
| Trail running 45:00 [3] | ||
| Arrived in Tromsoe and picked up some local maps. Run to and from the north Tromsoeya map for an evening training session. Explored the local forest and visited the university campus on the way home. | ||
| C • Awesome landscape 1 | ||
| Orienteering 1:10:00 [3] | ||
| Connected the dots on the Trim course. Very cool terrain. White was very runnable and the forest was soft. Visibility was just enough to see the contour features for good navigation. Low cloud ceiling but still got some views from the high points. | ||
Tuesday Jun 24 | ||
| Note | ||
| Slight lifestyle indiscretions last night and a busy course schedule suggested the need for a rest day. Travelling to Tromsoe overnight tonight by boat. | ||
Monday Jun 23 | ||
| Trail running 1:15:00 [2]+600m | ||
| Ran/scrambled up to Djevelporten and Floya, just northeast of town. Unfortunately the bluebird skies from the morning were gone and the pictures were only so-so. The dramatic green-coloured hillsides became a bit muted which was a shame.
Anita went for a bike ride to rest her foot.
| C • JWOC 3 | ||
Sunday Jun 22 | ||
| Trail running intervals 22:00 [4] | ||
| Did a 4x4 session with a 2 minute warm-up, while exploring the lit ski trails around Svolvaer. | ||
| Trail running warm up/down 30:00 [3] | ||
| For the above as well as rest between. | ||
| Mtn bike 40:00 [1] | ||
| Went for a late evening ride on some rented bikes with Anita and Laurent. Got as far as Kabelvaag lighthouse but it was getting cold and so we turned around after that. Got to enjoy the midnight sun indirectly since we're on the south side of the island. Were out for 1:45 total. | ||
Saturday Jun 21 | ||
| Trail running 1:19:00 [2] | ||
| Ran up Keiservarden from our hotel in downtown Bodoe. Had beautiful weather and nice views. Took some nice photos. Technically had an orienteering map but really only looked at it a few times. | ||
| Mtn bike 45:00 [1] | ||
| Rented a couple of bikes and biked up Keiservarden with Anita. Unfortunately by the time we headed off, there was fog/cloud at the top. Still, had a good time. Legs a bit stiff from yesterday. | ||
Friday Jun 20 | ||
| Event: Norsk O Festivalen | ||
| Orienteering race 50:00 [5] | ||
| O-festivalen middle distance World Cup. Quite shaky on long leg to #3 and got behind on orienteering. Made several smaller mistakes and 2 minutes by #8. Ran reasonably well after this so I have to be happy about that. Unfortunately my splits are missing from the results pdf on O-fest page (possibly due to my returning the loaned Emit card right after the race?). I'll look at the printout later and compare with the online results. | ||
Thursday Jun 19 | ||
| Orienteering 33:34 [3] | ||
| Model event for middle distance World Cup tomorrow. Rainy but warm. Nice forest and good flow today. Have to be careful on the dowhill attacks and there are some areas of low visibility. I feel good for tomorrow's race. | ||
Wednesday Jun 18 | ||
| Orienteering 46:00 [2]+238m | ||
| ahr:125 | ||
| Did a very relaxed "o-terval" session in Jegersberg. Focused on flow and reading ahead. Felt better than prior trainings but that is partly a function of the speed.
Raining and windy today. Hopefully will be nice driving weather tomorrow.
Tuesday Jun 17 | ||
| Orienteering 52:00 [4] | ||
| Ran a middle simulation course by Pascal using controls used by the guys for a night interval training session. Compared to how it can be around here, it was relatively flat but very tough in places with steep cliffs and detailed. Features marked by small reflectors that were hard to see - lost some time being sure on the correct feature before actually seeing the reflectors and didn't see the reflectors sometimes. Overall I think it disrupted the flow to have to look for these little things and prevented reading ahead after a while. ~9min/k again and spending time afterwards picking off ticks. Ah, Sorlanda. | ||
| Trail running warm up/down 15:00 [1] | ||
Monday Jun 16 | ||
| Orienteering 1:10:00 [3] | ||
| Re-ran the club champs middle and sprint courses in Sorlandsparken while Holger and Sandy did some control picking. Re-acquainted myself with Sorlands terrain. 10min/km is not bad here. Good courses and lots of micro-routes to find the fastest way. I can't say that I did exceptionally well at this today. Legs still heavy from the weekend. | ||
Sunday Jun 15 | ||
| Orienteering race 56:00 [5]8 km (7:00 / km) | ||
| Jukola: 5th leg for KOK2. Started out in 58th and dropped one place although I finished 2 secs behind 58th and handed the map over before...
Overall, tried to have a safe run after the mistakes being made through the night. In the end, ran too cautiously and had a lot of hesitations. I missed a couple of routes by trying to avoid the marshes. I had thought the rain and the thousands of runners before me would have churned them into a hopeless mess, however they (apparently) weren't too bad. Some legs went well though and I have to be satisfied for my first effort this season in scandinavian terrain.
Saturday Jun 14 | ||
| Event: Jukola 2008 | ||
| Orienteering 56:00 [3] | ||
| Jogged through the Jukola model event area with Rasmus, Bobach and Daniel. Nice area in general although the green slash areas weren't so nice. Definitely a working forest. | ||
Friday Jun 13 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] | ||
| Jukola training on training map Hyytiala with Pascal, Baptiste, Daniel and Holger - easy jog. Legs felt heavy after faster training yesterday. Made a couple of mistakes on direction but generally did okay. Felt rusty and 'behind' on the orienteering on some of the more technical legs. Also when my focus wandered. Need more map time... | ||
Thursday Jun 12 | ||
| Orienteering intervals 26:00 [4] | ||
| KOK training on Raakkykangas. Two O-tervals with mass starts and a two-man relay. Made a mistake on the first control of the first O-terval, then again on a boulder in green (got off on direction, didn't follow pack to this common control), otherwise did pretty well. Felt fairly strong despite it being 2am in my home time zone. Second interval started with relocation followed by 1.5k forked course. 2-man relay, paired with Baptiste. Daniel and Nicholas won in the end though, we finished third or fourth of the five teams. | ||
| Orienteering 58:00 [2] | ||
| Warm-up, jogs between intervals and to start of next exercise, etc. | ||
Wednesday Jun 11 | ||
| Orienteering 55:00 [3] | ||
| Easy jog in the evening on neighboring map to our accommodation: northern part of Hyytiala with Pascal and Damien. Bushy in places, super fast in others. Some subtle contours and lots of opportunity to get re-introduced to the Finnish grey mapping. Apparently this is a research forest for the University of Helsinki. | ||
Tuesday Jun 10 | ||
| Note | ||
| Travel day. Spent a looong day getting from Vancouver to Kristiansand. Started with the overnight flight from Vancouver, arriving in Heathrow. Short connection there to Oslo. Then 5 hour layover while waiting for flight to Kristiansand. Tempted to take train into Oslo to kill time but ended up napping and reading in a comfy chair that I found. By the time I got the bus from the airport, it was midnight. Found out that Eirik had twisted his ankle and Vegard had stepped on some glass and so KOK2 was short a warm body. Sooo, back to the airport tomorrow morning for 7:30am flight to Tampere... | ||
Monday Jun 9 | ||
| Treadmill running 40:00 [3] | ||
| Between checking out of my hotel and getting on the overnight flight to London, checked out the spa at the Fairmont. Bought a drop-in pass and hit the treadmill. Not a bad way to kill some time - thanks to Brent for the tip-off. | ||
| Strength training 20:00 [0] | ||
| Some core and strength stuff to make sure I got my money's worth at the Fairmont. | ||
Sunday Jun 8 | ||
| Road running 2:05:00 [2] | ||
| Got dropped off at the hotel by Jon and Lindsay after watching the pro guys compete at the ITU Triathlon World Champs - very cool to see, very good athletes for sure.
Decided to jog over the bridge to Sea Island. Ended up going over to Iona Island to watch the sunset. Once I got there, I thought I should run to the end of the breakwater, thinking that it was about 1 mile long. Turns out it's just short of 4k, one way. Oops. The great view and sunset were definitely worth it though. Managed to climb 31 meters overall. Must have been the two bridge crossings and the observation tower.
Saturday Jun 7 | ||
| Road running tempo 52:00 [4] | ||
| Did a set of tempo intervals around the sea wall at Stanley Park. First one of 30 min got me around the wall from Coal Harbour to 2nd beach pool. Then did a 11 min interval on Rawlings trail up to Prospect Pt. Good steady uphill grade. Large area of blowdown nearer to the point. (I guess now these Vancouverites understand what deforestation looks like up close!) Finished with a 11 min loop around the beaver pond, finishing at the Rose Garden. Felt good to get some faster training in. | ||
| Road running warm up/down 21:00 [1] | ||
| For above, plus some short jogs in between efforts. | ||
Wednesday Jun 4 | ||
| Bicycle commute 22:00 [1] | ||
Tuesday Jun 3 | ||
| Bicycle commute 22:00 [1] | ||
| Another day in the office. | ||
| Trail running 40:00 [2] | ||
| Easy run up at FFTW. | ||
Monday Jun 2 | ||
| Trail running 42:00 [2] | ||
| Easy run up at FFTW. | ||
| Bicycle commute 22:00 [1] | ||
Sunday Jun 1 | ||
| Road running race 37:00 [5] | ||
| Y 10k race. Ran all alone as Brian and the others were running the 1/2. Felt quite ordinary and didn't really get a good feeling. Pretty hilly although the wind and temperature were good for running. | ||
| Road running warm up/down 10:00 [1] | ||
| For above. | ||
| Bicycle commute 22:00 [1] | ||
| For ER shift after the road race. | ||
