Event: Varsity Match 2007

Orienteering race 1:25:45 [5]*** 8.6 km (9:58 / km) +340m 8:20 / km

Varsity Match on Wharncliffe. It's often said that Yorkshire forests are grotty, and this one lived up to expectations - if your feet weren't getting caught by the brambles as you were running through, absolutely knackered, then the ground was rocky and you needed to be careful where your feet were going (especially when your ankle is dodgy). You quickly learnt that tracks and light green woodland was the fastest - no crap on the floor!

The race was one of the most punishing physically that I've done. Wendover was tough, but without so much on the forest floor. Calves started cramping far too early and really had to mentally push myself round the last loop after the spectator control.

Technically - dragged by the trees off the start and was far too far right of #1, lost 30 seconds. Then another 2 minutes went on the way to #2 - came out onto a track 20m the wrong side of a small path that would have led me straight to it, but against my better judgement I decided not to backtrack but to go straight. Really silly choice in hindsight. Apart from that, just a bit lacking in confidence on some of the trickier controls and where there were some new mountain bike tracks that weren't on the map.

Just need more strength/fitness to be able to tackle a course like this well.

Note
Varsity Match tomorrow :) Last starter, should have the forest pretty much to myself, so no excuses of the distraction variety! Got to get myself in the correct mindset this year...

Monday Feb 12

Note
(sick)
felt strange again today, and events (like standing at Brasenose for 30mins waiting for non-existent quiz teams) didn't help the mood, so I now feel pretty crap mentally and physically. rubbish

Orienteering 1:15:00 [2]

Trains on Shotover - time is long as quite a bit of waiting around between sets. Pushed it fairly hard when running, was caught by Chris when hanging the first of my sets in the vague clearings, took time to move it as thought wasn't right. Then second set was fine. Caught Per a couple of times when chasing and he was hanging (well he wasn't going anywhere ;) ). Physically didn't feel too bad but only short efforts - quite a bit of uphilling and downhilling got the legs going, and occasionally there was some contouring practice. Good training exercise, was far smoother through the controls than last week, whether that's local knowledge I don't know...
Run - off road warm up/down 10:00 [3]
shoes: 2006 VJ Falcons
Run along the top of Shotover and back through the woods to give the other groups doing trains a bit of time to get ahead. We overtook one of them later so didn't make much difference... Initially didn't feel great uphilling, even on the short stretches.
Orienteering 16:30 [4]*** 1.9 km (8:41 / km) +100m 6:53 / km
spiked:10/13c shoes: 2006 VJ Falcons
'Prologue' of what could have been a chasing sprint, but the second activity turned out to be a snowball fight...

Overshot the first control then didn't see the flag, was sure I was in the right place for #4 (even if the map/ground were very vague in that area), started running up the wrong stream to #6 but twigged fairly quickly, but added another 10m or so of climb. Had to correct on the way to #12 as well, but generally felt far better about my orienteering than I did this time last week.

Went back out to check #4 afterwards, reckoned it was hung about 20m away from where it should have been but you can't really blame anyone when the map is so vague.
Cycling 20:00 [3]
From home, up Morrell Avenue to Shotover. Walked the bike up the Shotover hill... Morrell Avenue still feels an effort, but the bike really is crap and I should make a decent effort to get a new one this week...
