BADO District at Micheldever, Brown course. Ran with compass in pocket, needed to use it a couple of times when wasn't sure which path I'd hit. Not the best idea to go compass-less as map was decidedly dodgy in places, some of the features used for controls were a bit dubious and there generally wasn't enough to gather yourself on.

Couldn't get to grips with the scale either - 1:15, most of the woodland was very very runnable and so features appeared much faster than expected, relative positioning didn't seem right several times. Was taking it easy running-wise as well...

Screwed up far too many controls, some when standing quite close to them and just attacked in the wrong place/way. Especially the so called 'quarry' controls which were supposedly low earthbanks but more an excuse to put another feature on the map.

And the software in my EMIT card screwed up too, fortunately this was recognised before I started... So overall it was pretty scrappy and rubbish, around 20mins worth of mistakes I reckon

Note
bit of frisbee after work with the two Jamies, one of whom seems rather too lazy to be playing frisbee...

Running intervals (Track) 18:45 [5] 3.6 km (5:13 / km)

Track session at Iffley, primarily to gauge fitness but also as I really should be doing some more training...

Was hoping to do club run beforehand but discussions in lab went on a bit longer than I'd hoped. So intended warm-up was somewhat curtailed. Session was three times 300 (100 roll on) 200 (100) 300 (100) 100 with 2 minutes between sets.

Times:
60 (24) 43 (33) 63 (29) 19 (120)
66.5 (34) 45 (36) 66 (38) 19.5 (120)
64 (35) 44 (39) 67.5 (39) 18.5

Obviously went off too fast, second and third sets were a considerable effort - note significantly longer recoveries after first set. Couple of years ago when feeling near my best was running 60 second 300s so I reckon at least 10% off at the moment.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks
Drills before intervals, then a couple of laps very slow jog/walk immediately after last interval (3'17" and 2'38") before a bit of a stretch then two more laps with Joe at the end.

TVOC Summer Series at Hodgemoor, an area only about 4 miles from my home but only recently back in use for orienteering. Some sections were very fast and runnable beech woodland, others a maze of paths through bracken and thicker coniferous woodland offering some interesting route choices. Lots of paths and vague featureless woodland means need for compass, and as with all the summer series events this year I tried without. Added a level of complexity to proceedings...

No compass => problems out of the start for one, very hesitant initially, trying to work out what was and wasn't a path, then hitting a big path near a junction, relocating and seemingly being first one to first control on that particular loop. Messed up near end of loop when distracted by a control not on my course, then took safest relocation option i.e. to edge of field, if had had compass this might well have differed. Second loop went better apart from inability to work out which paths were which, then third loop lost a good 3-4 mins wandering around roughly where I thought the control should be and not seeing it, think it was slightly further from the path than mapped.

Too many of the errors today resulted from me trying to "race" too much, which meant the map contact wasn't as good as it should have been. It's an age-old problem, but need to force myself to look at the map more especially when running on the paths!
