In a new area just west of yesterday's map. Felt slow all day. Took most of the pre-start minute to fold the map but I still covered up a vital junction in the SW corner that I needed approaching #8. Had to reposition the map at least two other times. Decided to follow tRicky's good reviews and bought a piece of corflute from Bunnings on my way home. I now have an A3 map board for next week. #1 - Hesitated for another 40" at the start before heading off. The red line made it look like the main road went all the way but it didn't. Overshot and almost missed the tiny track at the end of the linking clearing (lost 1:20). #2/3 - OK. #4 - Spent 2:30 looking around the wrong dam. #5/6/7/8 - OK. #9 - Hard to work out where the mapped tracks were. Fence detail (light grey on pale yellow) hard to see. #10 - OK. #11 - Thought it might be faster on the road but Rob Prentice beat me easily via the the single track. #12/13/14 - OK. #15 - Misread the exit option (lost at least 2'). #16 - OK. #F - Via the orange at the end. Best legs: #2/5/10 (5th/9). Best pos: 6th (#3,5-F).

Course setter's notes: The abstract expressionism of this course brings to mind Kandinsky’s lithograph “Violett” from 1923 where the excitement of contrasting geometric shapes in a lyrical style of point and line criss-cross the map. Innovative trails will bring out the best in MTBO adventure racers. Ranging countryside on fast fire-trails combined with areas of compact activity brings together a balance of functionalism and suprematism in a space that is recovering from logging operations. Earth tones are evident in eroded gullies, tangled windrows, weathered ruins, remote ponds and soft pine needles. This is a rejuvenating forest waiting to be explored. Route options have been carefully planned to balance just enough pinchy climbing and technical riding with breathing room along the way. Keep an eye out for elusive local Shingleback Lizard.

Weekend stats: 3 races, 54.43km, +1103m, 38/45c (84%), 4h16'6", 6th x 3. Car: 718km, 10h40'.

Felt like I was on the pace to #6 but then mistakenly rode up the single track to #10(7) instead of #7. Lost 8:30 to there and then more on the slow exit. I think I must have spotted the "7" at the end of the code. Very disappointed. The long ride either side of #9(10) took a lot of energy. #12(13) - Possibly should have followed the single track longer leaving #11(12). Winsplits showed a 2:43 loss. Best legs: #F (3rd/9); #3 (4th/9). Best pos: 3rd/9 (#3). I was actually a competitive 5th at #5, just 2:55 behind 1st and 14' ahead of 6th.

First ever mass start MTBO race. Started watch a bit late so missed the first 1:30 / 400m on GPS trace. Too many mistakes by not paying enough attention to the map, especially when the controls were so obvious. The first 7 controls were a butterfly loop around a pivot (#1/4/7) before a big loop to the finish. #1/2/3 - OK. #4 - Missed turn (lost 30"). #5/6/7 - OK. #8 - Started riding to #9 (-2' up/down hill). #9 - Rode ride past control (-1:30). #10/11/12/F - OK. Best leg: #5 (2th/9). Best pos: 3rd/9 (#5).

I remember some of these trails from the early 1980s when I lived in Canberra. A lot more pine trees then. On Sunday mornings I'd be one of the troop following Deek for as long as we could on his 22mi training runs. Starting slowly from Duffy (S), the pace gradualIy built up over the first hour, as we dropped back one by one over the second hour. The undulating climb from Coppins Crossing (W) to Uriara Road (SW) always got the better of me so 18mi (30km) was enough.

Course setter's notes: This is a fast and furious course reminiscent of Strauss’s “Fledermaus”. The plot is an utterly farcical romp through plantation pine, urban fringe and the illustrious National Arboretum. The course will take riders hither and thither over loose gravel, soft sand, ragged rocks, Newcastle type bogs, prickly blackberries and eroded ruts. Along the way they might encounter bounding kangaroos, swooping magpies, deadly brown snakes, spikey echidnas, dog- walkers, random runners, commuter cyclists and perhaps horses, which of course, they should give way too. Apart from these standard Canberra normalities, this evening event in the new Daylight Saving Time will mean a low sun angle, so a helmet peak is recommended!
