Delphi (Greece). €12 for the museum and main site. 26°C. Load 008.
Explored the ruins of Delphi (800 BC) and the museum nearby. The reconstructed parts seemed to be more natural than those at Knossos. Quite high in the mountains (560m). We passed through a ski village (Arachova) on the drive up yesterday.

Galaxidi (Greece). 32°C. 26%rh. Load 005.
A 32km drive down the mountain from Delphi. Galaxidi is a seaside town on the Gulf of Corinth - more like a lake really. Our exploration took us to the old church (c. 1600) which has an interesting 'calendar' chiselled on the floor. At midday the sun shines through a hole in the roof to pinpoint one of 365 dots set out in an elongated infinity symbol. We were there at 3pm summer time so were too late. The newer larger church has some amazing intricate wooden engravings on the front wall interpreting stories from the bible. Dinner at the local fish restaurant where we selected our fish from drawers (like a morgue?). Today: 18832 steps, 48 floors.

Chania (Crete) > Athens (Greece): Aegean 335, Airbus A320 (twin-jet), 323km, 0h47m.

*Got to check-in and couldn't remember where my passport was. I knew I put it somewhere 'safe' didn't remember seeing it when packing this morning. Called the villas - housekeeping was still there - but they couldn't find anything in the room. Finally had another rummage through my bag and found it in a zipped compartment of a spare bag I was carrying 'empty' inside my main bag (5 minutes before baggage drop closed). Missing the flight wouldn't have been all that terrible. They were overbooked and were offering €150 for passengers to give up their seat. But the next flight wasn't until 7pm and that would have meant arriving at our next hotel around midnight.

Then drove 200km to Delphi. About €10 in tolls across 3 checkpoints. Today: 6780 steps, 6 floors.

Note

Eddie & Emma's wedding at a private garden overlooking Chania. Great to see 70 guests turn up from Australia, England and a few other places. More food, alcohol & dancing. We left at midnight because we had to fill up all the seats in the SUV. Bethany, Madi & Bethany came home an hour later.

Wreck of the Minnewaska (Crete). 25°C.
A little more interesting. This ship was built in 1909 and employed by the British Army as a troop carrier during WWI. It hit a mine in Souda Bay in 1916 but the captain managed to run it aground before it sank. All 1800 soldiers and 200 sailors were saved. A lot of the ship was salvaged for its steel but there are still remnants of its hull. A few fishing nets have been snared so the fish population is quite safe from humans. Not sure how long the resident lobster will last.

Alexandra Villa pool. Air 24°C. Water 25°C. Load 005.
Our villa has a 'private' 5x5x1m pool. Can't get more than a few strokes in but it's much nicer than the beach about 50m away (rocks and thorns).

Knossos Palace (Crete). €15. 22°C. Load 005.
Built around 1650 BC by the Minoans and destroyed around 1350 BC by fire and earthquake. Rediscovered in 1878 AD. Most of the original stonework is only enough to show where the walls may have been situated. Some parts have been reconstructed using modern materials. Not sure if this improves or distracts from the experience.

Spinalonga Island (Crete). €8. 21°C. Load 005.
Fortification of the island began in 1578 by the Venitians. It was last used as a leper colony in 1957. Very rocky terrain with only ruins remaining.

Driving on Cretan highways is interesting. Half the cars travel straddling the breakdown lane. This allows faster cars to overtake on the left. It also leaves space for cars overtaking from the other side of the highway. Apparently double lines in the middle of the road are just advisory and mostly ignored. Speed limits change frequently and can drop by 40km/h for no obvious reason. These also appear to be advisory unless there is a speed camera in the area. Hard to remember what the last posted limit was, so I usually drop to 60 just in case.
