Panathenaic Stadium, Athens (Greece). €10. 30°C. 35%rh. Load 005.
This is the official name for the old Olympic stadium built in 329 BC and used for the 1896 Olympics. Supposed to seat 60,000 people. The surface now is actually black tartan, not the cinders used up until Tokyo 1964. Tempted to do a fast lap like the kids when they were here a week or so ago but decided it was too hot. Caught the changing of the guards at the tomb of the unknown soldier on the way out - amazing slow-motion choreography.

Spent the morning driving back from Nafplio to drop the car off at Athens Airport (170km). Just public transport or walking from now on. Surprised to learn that there is a 6km canal joining the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf. So the Peloponnese peninsula has been an island since 1893.

Lycabettus Hill, Athens (Greece). €10 for the cable car. 30°C. 33%rh. Load 011.
Planned to watch the sunset from the top of this hill but was undone by cloud cover. Decided to walk back down about 10 minutes before the official sunset time (20:44) to beat the rush. There were hundreds of people at the summit at that time and the cable car could only take no more than 34 pax at a time. Today: 23682 steps, 73 floors.

Sanctuary of Asklepios, Epidaurus (Greece). €12 again. 23°C. Load 008.
A short drive from Nafplio. The 'wow' moment was seeing this 12000-seat 180° amphitheatre for the first time. Built before 300 BC, it's in remarkably good condition.

Sunken City, Epidaurus (Greece). Air 31°C. Water 25°C. 32% rh. Load 004.
A few walls and large pots less than 50m from shore at a depth of 1-2m. Accidentally discovered in the 1970s by aerial photography from a hot-air balloon.

Fortress of Palamidi, Nafplio (Greece). €8. 33°C. 15%rh. Load 010.
Situated 216m above Nafplio this castle was completed in 1715. Lots of rooms to find and lots of steps too. Great views of the town and sea. The Belgian guy we gave a lift to yesterday said he climbed all 999 steps - luckily we still had the car. Today: 15549 steps, 48 floors.

Mycenae (Greece). €12 - everything seems to be 12 euros in Crete/Greece. 32°C. 21%rh.
A stopover on our way from Olympia to Nafplio (215km) - about €4 in tolls. The boulders comprising the walls in this citadel are impressive. Many of the major entrances are still standing. Built around a hill, most of the structure dates from around 1350 BC. Picked up a Belgian guy at the site whose taxi didn't arrive. As he was going to Nafplio as well we took him the last 24km. Not a serial killer.

*Dropped Bethany off at the Pyrgos bus station this morning to catch a 7.30am bus to Athens. She's on her way to Paris to see the women's semi-finals on Thursday.

Nafplio (Greece). 33°C. 17%rh. Load 007.
Wanted to do a circuit along the waterfront but the path was closed due to the risk of falling risks. Ventured up to the Fortress of Akronauplía via some steep steps and hidden passageways. Today: 14812 steps, 54 floors.

Nafpaktos Castle (Greece). €3. 26°C. Load 008.
On a 200m hill above the coastal town of Nafpaktos. The most substantial fortifications occurred under the Venetians in the 1400s although the first build was around 500 BC.

Ancient Olympia (Greece). €12 for the museum and archaeological site. 30°C. 40%rh. Load 004.
Completed a 230km drive from Galaxidi including a €14 toll on the Antirrio-Rio Bridge. Olympia is a very large, flat site compared to some of the others we have been to on this trip. The remaining low walls give a good sense of the layout of all the buildings. The number and size of the reconstructed columns is impressive. Today: 13739 steps, 27 floors.
