Running 1:05:00 [2]

Run 5
Post Mogathon recovery run.

Wow, was I stiff and sore to start. Not unexpected at all. A very very easy run (no choice really) to work out the kinks and get rid of the stiffness and soreness. Did the usual out and back from my place. Went along as my legs would let me and slowly got to a "normal" stride. The return trip was good and I had a decent relaxed pace going.

Had a painful yet necessary and beneficial session with the foam roller once I got back. Don't do that enough.

Running race 2:27:44 [4] 30.0 km (4:55 / km)

Run 1
Mogathon 30km road race, Saskatoon SK.
Weather: Cool in the AM, about 3C with little wind. Sunny and warming later.

What a week! Worked 63 hours so no chance of a run at all. On Friday got home at 8:30PM so the plan to drive to Saskatoon changed and I drove up the morning of the race. Left Regina at 4:30AM and got to the race at 7:00 which left me good time to get ready.

Considering my utter lack of training and diminished fitness the last few weeks plus driving up the morning of and being dehydrated and tired from work I went into this race with no great expectations at all. My plan was to run a smart race, manage things, and run within myself. I am happy to report that for the most part I succeeded.

I started off with a moderate effort to loosen the legs from the drive (no warmup due to getting ready, chatting with people I know, etc). I found that my legs weren't as tight and unresponsive as I thought they'd be so that was nice. Got into a good rhythm and made sure I walked the early water stations to get in as much fluid as possible as I know I was significantly dehydrated going in. The first 10km of the course is generally an incline so I didn't push and still managed a 5:00 km average pace which I was happy with. After that I picked up the pace a bit and felt good for the majority of the race. Conitnued to drink lots through the race (didn't have to stop for a leak at all) and took a gel every 30 minutes. I also took 2 Endurolytes at the start, 2 at the 1 hour mark, and 2 at the 1:50 mark.

Had a strong solid effort from 10km-20km and felt really good through that section. Around 22km I started to feel my recent lack of running catching up to me so started to work a little harder to maintain the same effort. Wasn't surprised so it was fine. The harder thing to do was to have to continually dodge and weave through and around all the walkers and "leisurely pace participant" runners who were doing shorter distances. Mogathon also has a 5km walk/run, a 10km, and a Half Marathon that start later.

At 26km the wheels fell off my wagon a little bit and I found I just didn't have that same "push" and energy that I usually have at the end. Again, no surprise considering all the "no running" lately. Kept pushing though and when I hit the 28km mark I decided to "giv'er" the last 2.Just as I picked up my pace oddly my left hamstring almost went into a full blown cramp and my right calf started to twitch a bit. I grabbed my left leg and eased up immediately. Kept the pace backed off for the next km to let things settle down and then picked it up again to finish.

Overall I'm happy with how I managed my race and how I ran considering my circumstances going in. I felt I did evereything right during the race to give myself a good outcome and a good time (happy to be under 2.5 hours). As for the cramping close call, it's odd as I don't usually have that issue. WIth 6 Endurolytes in me it shouldn't have been an electrloyte problem. As I had the same thing happen at the Summit race I'm thinking possibly it could be effort/exertion related (if such a thing exists). Since I haven't been going any running at all, nver mind hard training efforts, lately my leg muscles are just not used to these sudden hard longer race efforts and are letting their displeasure known. A thought anyways.
