Rollerski long 2:00:00 [1] 15.5 mi (7:45 / mi) +303m 7:18 / mi

Short loop roll with junior girls, Alex and Rob. A few speeds to keep the juices flowing, and a lot of Ari wobbling on classic skis like he doesn't classic rollerski except under duress.

Then, the juniors had a baking contest and the coaches were judges. So we got to stand in the parking lot and judge surprisingly exceptional junior baking and stuff ourselves with calories we'd barely earned.

Orienteering 32:20 [1] 2.2 mi (14:42 / mi) +82m 13:10 / mi

After lunch at Reins (yes, eating and more eating, on Yom Kippur, #badjew) we went to do a control pick at Harriman. Found some not-allowed-but-not-visible parking and ran off through the woods. Started with an exercise wherein we'd trade off narrating a route description and then having the other person run it, which was fun, but slow. Then we switched off doing memory drills. Made it back just around dark. Then to the AMC camp, which is amazing, and would make a great base for a Harriman O camp.

Run intervals 44:20 [1] 5.4 mi (8:13 / mi) +341m 6:52 / mi

Four hills, Native Americana Jones style. Garmin got quite confused until about halfway through. HR up to about 160 on each hill: you do a sprint, and then keep running up a hill, so no recovery until the top. 50˚ and dry, so nice!

Run 34:07 [1] 3.8 mi (8:59 / mi)

NNW wind, cooling down finally. Needed some groceries, and the winds were basically going to be in my face, except on the way across the bridge, when it was going to be at my back. So, CR attempt!

Started the sprint on the bridge and kept the pace up the whole way across, generally sub-5 for 364.4 Smoots (about a 600). Missed the CR by 5 seconds (1:44, or a 4:54 pace) but after accounting for (and flagging) several issues, I was in 9th place overall. Out of more than 13,000. Thanks, tailwind!

Note

Those of you following along may notice a dearth of training in the past three days. Well, I've been busy, it's been hot, and I'm pre-tapering for Chicago (i.e. tapering for Highlander, then in to full taper). Hoping some cooler weather comes in for the race itself (the models are undecided, but it's a long way out).

Hiking 3:32:02 [1] 11.0 mi (19:17 / mi) +1192m 14:25 / mi

Warm weekend up in New Hampshire. Lots of time in Squam and a trip up to Pinkham to fetch the last components of my packboard. Which was fine, because it cooled down a bit by the time we got hiking. Up Passaconaway pretty quickly, with a stop to get more water, as we were both dumping sweat. Lots of stopping at viewpoints on the way to Whiteface, racing the sun, and got there at sunset. Andrew had had some dehydration issues so we slowed up a bit as well, but made it down in the dark with headlamps as planned. Would have liked to pound a bit more road this weekend but with the temperature this is probably just as good. Hoping the warm weather works its way out now before Chicago. (Early long range prognostications look ungood, but things can change.)

Rollerski long 2:40:24 [1] 23.7 mi (6:46 / mi) +490m 6:22 / mi

Out in Littleton, skiing with the long group. Generally pretty slow, and a loop around Fruitlands, and the downhill on chip seal always gnaws at my soul. Generally a moderate pace, a couple uphill pushes. One girl in the group who at one point comment on all the squirrels and what would happen if you hit one. So I told the story about the squirrel hit at the Carnival a few years ago. She didn't believe me but it totally happened, of course.

Run hills 42:46 [3] 5.1 mi (8:23 / mi) +343m 6:56 / mi

Teams this morning to record total number of hills, but for our five-person team to beat a six-person team (or a 22 person team) would have been foolish. But we all ran 6 hills, which felt good. Nice to be running in a cool rain. Yesterday + today makes me feel good for Chicago, if the weather holds. (Current forecast is way warm, so that won't happen.)

Run 59:46 [1] 7.9 mi (7:34 / mi) +28m 7:29 / mi

Out for a run in a bit less humidity, not quite time for a long run, but enough for an hour. Out to Fresh Pond for some tempo around the pond, about 20 minutes at low L3. I might should focus on my cadence a bit more. Felt pretty good, even if a bit warm.

Run 41:43 [3] 2.0 mi (20:51 / mi) +751m 9:38 / mi

41 minutes of stadiums. Achilles felt a little weird, so didn't go fast down. Felt okay to start, and then a bit better. Warm, even in the cool humid air and light ran/mist. Made a tour in 28, 50 in 39 and finished with 53, so not bad.

Had an idea for a "last man standing" stadium race: Everyone starts out together, and anyone who finishes in <40 minutes starts again, 40 minutes later. Then anyone who finishes that in <38 minutes starts again, 38 minutes later, then 36, 34, 32, etc, until there is just one person on the start line (or if no one is on the start line, whoever wins the last lap). I may propose this.

Run warm up/down 44:40 [1] 4.8 mi (9:18 / mi) +10m 9:15 / mi

Late to track, missed the first couple of intervals, so got to do some on my own. Didn't feel great during the intervals—stomach cramps, possibly due to a very greasy piece of pizza I ate at 5:30—then really terrible on the way home, barely making it to the restroom in time. Hooray?

Run intervals 18:27 [3] 3.0 mi (6:09 / mi)

4x1200. Skipped the first 800 because I was late and had already missed a couple of 1200s. 4:36 for the first, 4:29 for the second (everyone else's last) then 4:44 on my own (feeling crampy and gross) and at least 4:38 for the last. Did not feel happy. Never got the HR over 160, either.

Run 30:15 [1] 4.0 mi (7:34 / mi)

Kind of cheating to do a bit of tempo (well, 1.5 miles or so) with the wind, but it felt good at least. Late evening after a bunch of things all day, but at least I made it out. Muggy, but cool at least.

Run 32:51 [1] 3.6 mi (9:07 / mi) +128m 8:13 / mi

Must have gotten pretty dehydrated on Saturday, and it was hot and humid in the sun today. Thought about the lake, but didn't run much. Felt pretty lethargic. Also, not biking and then biking does weird things to your legs. New muscles!

Bicycle 2:02:27 [1] 32.7 mi (3:45 / mi) +678m 3:31 / mi

So, I should have been doing a long run this weekend. But two things got in the way.

1) It was hot and humid and I don't do so well in that.

2) Lincoln decided we should try to put three bicycles in his plane and fly to Bar Harbor and bike up Cadillac.

Ooh, let's do that!

VFR came in to BXM around noon, and we were flying by 1:30. Under an hour up to BHB, changed in the FBO, biked around the ramp a bit, and then off to Cadillac. Really moving for the first 10 miles, and felt pretty good halfway up the hill, but then as I was pouring sweat on to my top tube and I slowed down some. Super sweaty out, and the sea breeze only blew in very close to sea level.

A few minutes up top, then we zoomed down the hill and back to BHB: 1:10 up, 50 down. Loaded the bikes in, with only a bit of yelling at each other, and flew back to BXM. The fog was rolling in as we flew, with a bank moving towards BXM that we could see. IWI was our alternate, which would have been sort of okay, but we made it in to BXM with a few minutes to spare (as we were unloading, we went from VFR to LIFR in a couple of minutes). A foggy drive for burritos and pie!

Run 38:14 [1] 4.1 mi (9:20 / mi) +255m 7:49 / mi

New NP pattern today: down back hill, then around and up the grassy hill. One front hill to start. I was late and ran that, ran with my bag, then dropped it. Super-duper sweaty today, so that was relatively unfun. But I got feeling better, fartleked up the steep steps up to the grass, then ran through the football pad people. Good little intervals.

Run 26:15 [1] 3.2 mi (8:12 / mi)

Quick run to get peaches at Star Market. Tropical systems dragging in a ton of humid air, which is gross. Went for a run, felt pretty drecky, but then it started pouring. I thought I might get stuck in Boston, but the storm went just south, so no lightning on the bridge. Then off to buy pie dishes.

Run 40:52 [3] 2.0 mi (20:26 / mi) +709m 9:43 / mi

Fun times on the stairs with back to the future. Back 1 section until 19, then 2. Made it to the finish having done 13 extra sections, which is 50, which is enough. Ran fast down after each BTTF.

Run warm up/down 13:30 [1] 1.5 mi (9:00 / mi)

Track warm up at Harvard with CSU. Watch took forever to find satellites. First mile didn't happen (isn't on Strava).

Run warm up/down 3:25 [1] 0.2 mi (17:05 / mi)

Drills.

Run 18:42 [1] 2.1 mi (8:54 / mi)

Interstitials.

Run intervals 20:33 [4] 3.5 mi (5:52 / mi)

8-10-8-6-10-8-6, with pickups/surges from 300m left to 200m left. Fun, good workout. Lots of speedy CSUers out there, I was lagging a bit, but kept my splits below 6:00 which was pretty good for a 5k pace. Went faster on the second go-round, especially the last one. Hadn't felt great, but was feeling good later on.

Maybe one more week of track before I taper off before Chicago.

Run long 2:34:59 [1] 18.5 mi (8:23 / mi) +443m 7:48 / mi

Long run around Lovejoy and Pocasset. Started with my sister’s friend’s husband, who is a D1 track runner alum. He pushed me pretty fast around the first few miles, then I sent him back to camp for the next lake. Some hills, a pretty nice run, and a the bit along 133 was busy, but not too bad. Did some pickups on the latter bits, hit the bottom of the Dam Hill right as my watch went buzz, and a mile and 10:30 later I was 260 feet higher. So that was fun. But ran the last mile at 8 and jumped in the lake.

And, hey, a 48 mile week the first week of classes bookended by two weddings. On to Chicago!

Run 1:33:59 [1] 11.5 mi (8:10 / mi) +270m 7:37 / mi

Sister's day-before-wedding-day, which I was the RD for the 5k, and in charge of the bedspring barbecue (chicken for 115 on a bedspring). Found an hour and a half, barely, for a run. Went around the lake, doing 3 miles or so of tempo, dropping a 6:50 with a pretty low HR and then churning up the hill, and then ran the 5k course, mostly because Strava. Then stood in front of the grill for 2 hours.

Run 30:18 [3] 4.0 mi (7:35 / mi) +256m 6:19 / mi

PR hills day. I felt pretty gacky after too many adventures yesterday, so I treated it more as a threshold workout: fast on the downhills, pretty fast on the uphills, but trying to stay below L4. I did, mostly, but kept my heart rate mostly over 140 on the downhills, so not full recovery. Interholds, or threshtervals, or something.

Thursday Sep 7, 2017 #

Run 1:07:43 [1] 8.5 mi (7:58 / mi) +51m 7:49 / mi

School wanted me to walk from Dudley to Downtown. Well, I can do that. Just, you know, a fast walk.

Run 32:00 [3] 1.5 mi (21:20 / mi) +496m 10:31 / mi

Relayman, so partners. Mine was a newbie, as they wanted the newbies to all have partners. That was fine. I ran the first 7 sections, switched off, and the new guy crushed the next five.

Then I ran my five, and he went a lot slower.

Then I ran my five, and he looked like he was about to die. I took over after 4, ran around the turn, and gave him a rest. Wound up running 35 sections (I think?) but ran them hard, so that's good.

Run 28:49 [1] 3.7 mi (7:47 / mi)

Run to Whole Foods, only time to do it, warm, but not to bad. Some strides on the other side of the river felt good.

Run 47:44 [1] 6.1 mi (7:50 / mi) +66m 7:34 / mi

Cousin’s wedding Greenwich, Conn. Fuck you, Greenwich, Conn.

Went for a run down to a park. A public park. It was rainy overnight so no sense in going to woods for a mud fest, and this looked like a nice run from the hotel. Got down to the park (~3 miles) and a rent-a-cop in a windbreaker came out and told me I needed a pass to use the park. I said it was a public park. He said it was only for Greenwich residents who purchased a pass. I told him this was ridiculous. He said he’d call the police.

Not wanting to get bailed out for my cousin’s wedding, I decided to turn around. But I wish him, and the rest of Greenwich, ill. It’s one thing to require parking passes. It’s another to disallow people from a park. Disgusting. Turns out my uncle had tried to book a park in town for the pre-wedding bbq to be told something similar (you’re not from here go away) and he probably would have been the first one in line to bail me out. Or pay the $25 fine.

The run was fine, a little wet, some 60s pickups.

Then I had a jack-and-coke at the wedding so I wound up passing out from the booze in bed but then waking up from the caffeine, which toasted the entire next day. Lesson learned. Stick to G&Ts.

Also, Attackpoint keeps randomly reloading and deleting what I’ve written. Anyone else?

Rollerski 1:58:05 [1] 15.3 mi (7:43 / mi) +298m 7:17 / mi

L1 with kiddos. Haven't gone classic in a while.

Rollerski 7:30 [1] 1.1 mi (6:49 / mi) +6m 6:42 / mi

Rollerski to catch bus to meet Alex. Got to bus stop and the app said no bus for 11 minutes, but the schedule said one should arrive, and sure enough, up pulled a bus with no working AVL, ASA or head sign.

Run 45:38 [1] 5.3 mi (8:37 / mi) +341m 7:11 / mi

Calves still sore from Wednesday but I found my way through four full hills so hill repeats. Checked the log, the last time I ran front or full hills was April 14. So out of practice! Cold a little better after coming back last night, mostly now yellow stuff that's good for snot rockets.
