Trail Run long 2:15:02 [1] 12.3 mi (10:59 / mi) +246m 10:20 / mi

Trail run with Maartje, Kyle et al. Good company, good running for 11 miles. Then mile 12. First I put a branch in to my eye, so run with a sort of blurry eye for a while. Then I put my foot in a divot and sprain my ankle. Not badly, but ugh. Hobble back to the car, but seem okay.

6 AM

Trail Run 20:00 [1] 1.7 mi (11:46 / mi)

Easier to run across the lake in the light; last night got lost in the fog. Quick run down, not super speedy with so little snow, though.
9 AM

Ski race 3:06:00 [3] 31.3 mi (5:57 / mi) +740m 5:32 / mi

Oh Craftsbury. Years of having usually decent excuses to not do Craftsbury (I have another race! It's pouring rain! I don't want to ski a 50k classic race) but I finally acquiesced. Wax was klister binder covered with Rode -1 – -5, no glide because fuck glide. (Also because I didn't want to put glide wax on at 10 on Thursday night, and also also because blow torches are way more fun than wax irons, and faster, too.)

Time to test wax and pee and not eat enough, and the go! Some moron crashed in front of me by changing lanes without looking, stepping on the tips of the guy in front of me. By tips I mean he put his foot on the guys tips, like not even close, dude. I cursed at them and stayed upright, praise allah.

Then took it easy; not about to win Craftsbury. Also, 50k classic.

First couple laps were tolerable. Downhills a little sketchy, a few dirty spots, a few thin spots, but overall not too bad. Craftsbury is a very nice course, but four times around it is, well, leaves something to be desired for the premier marathon in the northeast. I will hand it to them, though, it is a full 50k. None of this Sugarloaf 50k 40k nonsense.

Which hurts, because classic. My back. Oh, my back. Longest classic race I've done.

Near the end of the second lap the fucking paper bib came part undone, and started flopping around, and I said fuck it and tore it off. Paper bibs should die. If you are going the cheap route, give out paper numbers with safety pins because those don't fall off and flop around. If you are charging $100 for a race buy fucking cloth bibs like every race in the Midwest, because a) people won't hate you and b) your sponsors get more play because people save them and hang them up rather than throw them away. I was powered by anger for most of this race.

Third time up Ruthie's I bonk, but thank goodness they have goo at the top. Lost two guys there. My skis, never fast, got a bit more sluggish although my kick was okay the whole way (just tireder later on). Kept the two guys within visual range the last time up Ruthie's but had no get up and go, and they stayed in front, and one more guy caught me on the last hills. Major positive splits (41, 45, 48, 49). So that's, well, not great.

Izzy beat me by a minute, too.

But I skied Craftsbury. Now that I've joined NENSA Andy said he'll put me on the marathon committee so I can bitch about how stupid marathon racing is in New England.

Ski warm up/down 10:20 [1] 0.8 mi (12:55 / mi) +20m 11:59 / mi

Ski back to car. Realize keys are in pants at center. Ski back and forth to get dry clothes.

Despite my B&Ming, I actually did have fun.
1 PM

Ski warm up/down 15:11 [1] 1.6 mi (9:29 / mi) +30m 8:58 / mi

Ski out a bit and realize I am hopelessly beat and that this skiing is doing nothing training-wise and ski back to the car and then drive to Hill Farmstead. Yes, beer.

Trail Run hills 29:57 [1] 1.8 mi (16:38 / mi) +305m 10:54 / mi

Run up to the Lonesome Roadside Motel. Long drive up (traffic + accident on 93) and the caretaker was already asleep (or not there, or something). Ran in to the hut to the amazement of the goofers (as usual), especially when they looked at my shoes. "What did you run up in?" "Trail runners and microspikes." "How long did it take you?" "Half an hour."

Good night sleep in sleeping bags :)

Thursday Jan 28, 2016 #

5 PM

Run 39:59 [1] 5.5 mi (7:16 / mi) +20m 7:11 / mi

Mediumish run along the river, one fast mile, Garmin pooped the bed along the way. Just lost GPS and did silly things.

Wednesday Jan 27, 2016 #

7 PM

Ski 47:22 [1] 6.1 mi (7:46 / mi) +30m 7:39 / mi

Mostly teaching people then skiing around a few times, with some speeds. Fast tonight! Would have been more fun for Worlds.

6 PM

Ski 22:00 [1] 3.3 mi (6:40 / mi) +30m 6:29 / mi

Four laps pre-race. Slow! I do not have the skis for this and I didn't wax the skis I have. So, fun.

Ski race 24:53 [4] 4.6 mi (5:25 / mi) +40m 5:16 / mi

Here's a new one for TNWs: The groomer is out on the course at the start of the race. So we all stand around and make comments, then start skiing. Finally get started.

My skis were slow.

I couldn't hold on to the front pack at all, and you could see that Rob and John had fluoros on their skis because they were right off the front right away. I had struggles: worked hard but couldn't get any speed up. Fell in to a group of three and finished in the middle of it as my skis sucked on the snow. It would have been nice if it had frozen, eh?

Run warm up/down 20:00 [1] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Run to and from NP

November Project 24:00 [3] 0.5 mi (47:59 / mi)

November Projects! Lunges! Runs! Bench Dips! Push ups!

This is kind of fun. I can deal with some Mondays.

Sunday Jan 24, 2016 #

Run 29:00 [1] 3.5 mi (8:17 / mi) +30m 8:04 / mi

Running over to JP to watch the football. Yeah, that went well.

Ski 17:30 [1] 2.7 mi (6:29 / mi)

Warming up around and around the fields. Kick seemed okay. Didn't know how great it would be.

Ski 1:11:44 [3] 13.0 mi (5:31 / mi) +277m 5:11 / mi

Fast day at Jackson. Stayed near the front pack, with John and Frank, for the field, and got dropped on the Yodel uphill. Kick wasn't perfect. This pretty quickly put me in to no man's land; I was behind them but in front of a group of four. Was passed by two guys during the first lap and a third broke off of this chase group and I took a ride off of him the second time up the Wave. He was a little faster than me on the downhills but my double pole was superior.

We traded leads for a while and the last time through the Eagle fields I DPed ahead, and led down the Yodel. I scrubbed a little speed and then let loose on to the golf course, and then let loose with big double poling. The magic of long, stiff poles. Finished a few seconds ahead.

Apparently I was the tie-breaker that won it for CSU, which was dedicated to Chuck Kellogg, which was a nice touch by Rob (who I beat by a couple of minutes). 3 down on John and Frank, 14 down on these guys Kris Freeman and Tad Elliott. Who are they, anyway? In any case, that's only 3:30 for every Olympics Kris has been to that I haven't, so that's okay, I guess.

Still don't understand why they can't at least add in the Henry to get it to 23k, or maybe even a lap of the west side of the river just before the EMH climb, or something.

Ankle feels good. Craftsbury is probably a go at this point.

Ski 36:10 [1] 5.4 mi (6:42 / mi) +172m 6:06 / mi

I was cold after the race but warmed up and convinced Jess that we should go ski up at Prospect. The tracks were better and the skiing good (I skated). Turned out my legs were quite tired, so we took it easy, then went to the Moat for a beer.

And then hit a wall of snow in Massachusetts. Fun driving!

Friday Jan 22, 2016 #

Run 20:31 [1] 2.6 mi (7:53 / mi) +10m 7:48 / mi

Quick run along the river before the race tomorrow.

Ski 29:44 [1] 2.8 mi (10:37 / mi) +20m 10:23 / mi

Teaching people at Weston. One lap quickly. Classic.

6 PM

Ski warm up/down 19:35 [1] 3.3 mi (5:56 / mi) +30m 5:46 / mi

Warming up for Worlds. The loop is up to 1k and they're working on making it bigger. Not sure if we'll be able to use the infield, though, as the fence is all the way around. Five guns going. On my stiff skis with some wax; I've been sandbagging with those old Arcs!

Ski race 14:06 [4] 3.3 mi (4:16 / mi) +30m 4:09 / mi

Worlds!

Cool. Breezy. Fast. Just how we like it.

Went out conservatively in don't-break-equipment mode at the back of the pack, which finally started moving at the top of the first hill. Alex drafted behind me and got ahead on the first turn with a pack of about 8 in front of us. I said nuh uh and V2ed hard up the next hill to latch on to the back of the pack. It held together until the top three guys (Frank, Tom and John, the usual suspects) skied off the front an I was at the back on the second lap.

On the second hill (of two) of the lap I decided to push the pace a little and thrashed my way to the front. Always nice to have a nice, wide track. Then I led the next two laps. Went (relatively) easy on the flats and hard on the uphills, and we shook off one skier, so it was a pack of four coming in to the final lap. I slowed down and Rob took a lead coming in to the lap and got a bit of a gap on the corner, but I closed it and burned all my matches on the last hill since there was some traffic ahead and I didn't want to get boxed in. This worked as I led through the traffic and down the last hill. Someone came up next to me but I outsprinted them by half a ski length for fourth.

Not too bad; would be fun to try to ski with the pack ahead.

And then I was reminded of how hard skiing is. Go as hard as you can using your whole, entire body. None of this legs only stuff, oh no. Worlds are fun.

Ski warm up/down 16:08 [1] 2.0 mi (8:04 / mi) +20m 7:49 / mi

And then it was time to cool down and then to eat food.

Monday Jan 18, 2016 #

Ski 1:33:00 [1] 11.0 mi (8:27 / mi) +219m 7:58 / mi

Striding at Pinelands in the morning. Watch didn't start right off the bat, so a bit estimated (yeah, I reskied it because Strava). A couple of rocks I picked out and a couple of thin spots but otherwise perfect. And snow. And more snow a-comin?

Sunday Jan 17, 2016 #

11 AM

Ski long 2:00:01 [1] 14.7 mi (8:10 / mi) +495m 7:23 / mi

Striding! Yay! base klister on skis from … something last year (whoops) and hard tracks up at Prospect. Village was a zoo with shufflers on Ellis (and I got a late start; slept almost until 9) and college kids coming back from the carnival, I assume all on the Wave checking out the NCAAs course.

Plus snow was reported better at Prospect.

And it was! Perfect tracks! Almost mid-winter! Strided out Boggy Brook, then out the UST and realized the end of the UST was perfect: little traffic, mostly striding but with some nice transitions, 25m of climb, and a hell of a view of Mount Washington to keep me occupied.

I lost count of my intervals but Strava said I did 9, and then a few shorter technique-focused ones as I was tired.

Good times.
3 PM

Ski 1:14:47 [1] 9.7 mi (7:43 / mi) +243m 7:09 / mi

Out for the afternoon at Prospect. It was social day on the trails; I took two groups' pictures, then saw an OH (who I recognized by her MMVSP license plate) at the parking lot, and then a Macalester coachee's parents who I recognized by the Macalester jacket and then on the train Kiersten who I coaches NNHS with in 2007 and who recently moved to NH skiing with her dog.

I had no-pole skated the first 8k or so and then I was the rabbit for the dog who would furiously chase me and then, when I stopped, lie down in the snow. Kept me honest at least.

Saturday Jan 16, 2016 #

10 AM

Ski long 2:18:30 [1] 16.4 mi (8:27 / mi) +476m 7:45 / mi

Snow! Not that much, about two inches, 30˚, and just slow, slow slow. Skating/trudging, lots of work. V2ing down hills, V1ing up most everything. Kind of discouraging because a) not that much snow and b) it made it seem so much harder than it actually was; I had to keep telling myself that I wasn't slow, the snow was.

Out Ellis and back, quite nice, then up to the top of Hall and back. 2:18 for less than 30k! But none of the downhills were tricky at least.

Ski 11:37 [1] 1.7 mi (6:50 / mi) +13m 6:40 / mi

Stopped at the cocoa cabin where a friend was working. Woo hot cocoa! Chatted for a while before a ski back to town. The trails with more traffic were getting a little faster, the tracks glazed.
3 PM

Ski 1:06:06 [1] 8.1 mi (8:10 / mi) +266m 7:24 / mi

Long lunch and getting warm by the fire. Went up to ski the wave before the sportsball game. Forgot wallet so I didn't ski up to the Shovel Handle. Two laps of the Wave, still slow, then by Eagle but still didn't have money so down to town. Took off drink belt. Realized that of course there was the emergency $20 in my drink belt; there always is. Felt dumb.

Took shower. Drove to Shovel Handle, which was surprisingly empty for a seat at the bar, two beers (and no more since I was driving and not skiing down the hill) and Sportsball.

Back to the OH after, 44 when I got in and 66 when I went to bed. Yay, woodstove.

Friday Jan 15, 2016 #

9 PM

Ski 37:49 [1] 5.4 mi (7:00 / mi) +176m 6:22 / mi

Up to Jxn after work, in around 9:30, so sure I'll take a ski by headlamp. Scratchy, but a decent base for the snow tomorrow.

Thursday Jan 14, 2016 #

Ski 42:38 [1] 6.4 mi (6:40 / mi) +50m 6:30 / mi

Skiing laps and laps and laps of Weston. Each lap about 750m, which is tedious. Guns going, but only four of them (I thought they'd bought new and more guns, but two were sitting idle) but at least the snow was mostly okay. First half no poles, second half with poles, hard up the hills, easy elsewhere. Finally race next week?

Wednesday Jan 13, 2016 #

November Project 35:58 [1] 1.5 mi (23:59 / mi)

Bojans, burpees and laps of the track, since it was too icy to run stairs. Fun, and make core hurt. Might head for Porter next time, though, for all the stairs.

Tuesday Jan 12, 2016 #

Run 46:54 [1] 5.9 mi (7:57 / mi) +30m 7:50 / mi

Driving, wet snow. Can't ski in the snow? Run in the snow! And the wind.

Monday Jan 11, 2016 #

6 AM

Run warm up/down 19:08 [1] 2.4 mi (7:58 / mi) +10m 7:52 / mi

Run to NP over at Brigham Circle.

November Project 22:00 [3] 0.5 mi (43:59 / mi) +50m 33:34 / mi

Fun NP this morning. I'd inadvertently clicked the "verbal" link and felt pretty ducky at 5:50 so, off I go.

22 minutes of circuits of stairs, broad two footed jumps (which you have to do for maximum length, not maximum number of jumps, guys), bench dips (supposed to do 10, I did 20-30), sit ups (10) and push ups (10). I did five or six circuits. Mmm, bench dips.

Will be sore from this, but good sore.

Run 19:27 [1] 2.2 mi (8:50 / mi)

Starva thinks this burned 327 calories.

Sunday Jan 10, 2016 #

Note

60 and raining. Just looking at Biggins's Ski-O maps made me want to Ski-O so hard.

Saturday Jan 9, 2016 #

11 AM

Ski long 53:04 [1] 8.1 mi (6:33 / mi) +170m 6:09 / mi

First portion up and down Osceola/Snows. Scratchy; I stopped to pitch a couple of rocks in to the woods. Skiing, though.

Ski hills 1:09:47 [1] 10.7 mi (6:31 / mi) +453m 5:46 / mi

Twice up Tripoli. Given that I've done three intensity days in a row I decided that today would be a two hour OD, with a long drive to get there. Did a few pick-ups up the hill, too.

Caught an edge at the bottom, put a divot in the trail, filled it in with snow from the side.

Ski warm up/down 6:42 [1] 0.9 mi (7:27 / mi)

Alex and Jess went out for 10 more minutes. I grabbed a sandwich because I was getting bonky and went out for 7, no-poling past shufflers eating my sandwich.

Friday Jan 8, 2016 #

6 AM

Run hills 35:29 [3] 4.3 mi (8:15 / mi) +250m 6:59 / mi

Hello NP! Haven't hit the hills in a while because ankle. Still took it easy doing down (7 minute miles) but felt good going up (not perfect, though). Had a good run, little cool down. Ankle feels okay. Progress.

Thursday Jan 7, 2016 #

7 PM

Ski 40:00 [3] 6.5 mi (6:09 / mi) +65m 5:58 / mi

Out to Weston after work and most folks had gone. Wanted to do something relatively quick and specific, decided on a 4x4 with 2-3 minutes of cool-down in between. Mostly successful, four minutes is nearly twice around the track with both little loops at the end. Felt good on the V2s up the bigger of the hills, and a little dodgy on the icy sections. Legs pretty trashed from stadiums yesterday.

Then I lost my pass which was attached to the same clip I've been using for three years. F that. Will have to get another one.

Wednesday Jan 6, 2016 #

6 AM

Run hills 43:00 [3] 2.0 mi (21:30 / mi) +625m 10:54 / mi

Funnn times back in the stadium! Anklegeddon is over, and I went to run the stairs. The bottom seven steps were sketchball icy, so it was the top 24 steps. Run 15 sections, then back around for another go. Every 13 minutes the whistle blew and you did as many pushups as you'd run sections (or maybe 13 pushups, but I did the latter, so 57 pushups).

Started with a long sleeve woolie over a short sleeve ibex wool shirt. Ditched the hat and top layer pretty quick. Ditched the shirt entirely for the final go-round. Sweaty frozen shirt! Then despite putting on all the clothes, my hands were frozen. Arnout warmed them up with his somehow-warm hands (I'd had lobster gloves on!) and I struggled home with dry-but-thinner gloves since the lobsters were moist.

On the way home the river was frozen.

And it wasn't even that cold!

Still, good times getting in 600m of climb and getting back to running stairs. It's fun! Need to do a VK some morning there.
6 PM

Ski 40:28 [1] 6.2 mi (6:32 / mi) +60m 6:20 / mi

Out to Weston. Snow was not half bad! Untransformed and thin in a couple of places, but snow. Mostly switching off between no poles and double poles. Hopefully we'll be able to race next Tuesday …

Tuesday Jan 5, 2016 #

Run 33:55 [1] 4.0 mi (8:29 / mi) +58m 8:07 / mi

Going to buy a compost bin, not in a straight line, looking for some hills.

Monday Jan 4, 2016 #

Note

Skiing is pretty amazing. It's so super low impact that you can do it all day and not have joint/knee/ankle/whatever pain. But it is so goddamn full body that if you do it for four hours a day you are completely spent. I'm sure that if I'd run 8 hours this weekend (including sprints, hills and intervals) my legs would be screaming. But they're not. Yay, skiing!
6 AM

November Project 20:00 [1] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Got home from Jackson and clicked on a map of the Allston running route to November Project. After 102k, I had no plan to go to NP. The map was a route to my house. For the first time ever, NP was being held in Dana Park.

So I went. And I made cinnamon buns. Stuck the buns in the oven at 6:28, ran to the park, did 20 minutes of running and other things, arms quite sore from skiing, then grabbed the buns out of the oven and we had a little picnic and inappropriate pictures were staged.

Sunday Jan 3, 2016 #

10 AM

Ski 1:46:04 [1] 15.1 mi (7:01 / mi) +508m 6:22 / mi

Back to Prospect because it was just that good. Not perfect, but good. Skied out Bog Brook and back no poles, then put the Triacs to good use with Elissa, Joel and another guy Strava says is Keith. Yay, skiing! They went away and I did hill repeats, 3x 25m climb V2, then 3x 110m climb up to the top of the grooming. Only issues were having to pull off for people very deliberately snowplowing down so slowly. Stava sez I descended at 30 mph.

Then a little cool down.
1 PM

Ski 1:00:09 [1] 9.1 mi (6:37 / mi) +180m 6:14 / mi

Back to Prospect in the afternoon because snow! Skiing is so fun. So, so fun.

No poles out Bog Brook again, double pole back, then skating out the UST. 15k more before the drive home. I want to do this more. Snow, we need you.

Saturday Jan 2, 2016 #

8 AM

Ski long 1:21:54 [1] 11.2 mi (7:19 / mi) +329m 6:42 / mi

Up to Prospect for fresh tracks. Pretty damn nice skiing. Out Bog Brook, then up the hill a couple of times (hills are fun) with a lot of dickering around and chatting, then down to the car. Something like 40 minutes not skiing, which seemed like a lot but the other Stravas agree. It felt slow, but that must have been the stop and chats.
11 AM

Ski 46:52 [1] 6.4 mi (7:19 / mi) +178m 6:44 / mi

Parents came up, hour between lunch (bialy) and second lunch. Skied the Wave once and then the other stuff up there, 45 minutes. New skis were done (earlier than they said) and are lots of fun. Too nice to be proper rock skis, though. I think I'll race at least once at Weston with them. No idea how they're flexed. Worlds!
2 PM

Ski 1:44:28 [1] 13.5 mi (7:44 / mi) +394m 7:06 / mi

Out the Ellis. Beginning fine but crowded, beyond there quite scratchy. Went about as far as I could before water bars, etc, and came back. Good for balance, I guess?

Then up towards Hall but I was bonking. Took off the drink belt and did easy hill repeats up the Wifferdill (quite nice) before coming back to town. Pretty cooked after ±45k and the hills today.

Friday Jan 1, 2016 #

4 PM

Ski 1:00:42 [1] 8.2 mi (7:24 / mi) +254m 6:45 / mi

Late night, late wake up, conditions sounded sort of okay but had a lot of figuring out where all my ski stuff was. But then, skiing! On snow! Not on wheels, on snow. Snow!

Kind of excited. Got to Jackson, dropped off my $12.50 skis (pink Atomic Arcs) and free bindings for a $15 mounting job. Then started looking at poles. Found Triacs from last year, marked down to $285, plus 10% off for my Jackson season pass. So I then spent 9 times as much on the poles as the skis. But I need long poles and damn are these nice poles. Stiff and light.

So I took them on a spin up the yodel, twice around the wave, and down. Dark by now, kind of scratchy in places but fun, and snow!
