Run 44:57 [1] 5.3 mi (8:29 / mi) +27m 8:21 / mi

Was going to ski, then had meetings go all afternoon after being up late (so no NP) doing work on a project.

Ski warm up/down 1:00:10 [1] 9.4 mi (6:24 / mi) +146m 6:06 / mi

Out to Weston to warm up, and then about 45 minutes after the race skiing around with John and Cary Brandon and well there are a lot of Colby kids out here.

Ski race 18:50 [4] 4.0 mi (4:43 / mi) +62m 4:30 / mi

Five laps of the course tonight. With 2" of new snow and snow guns, it was reasonably fast and reasonably soft. So out came the soft skis! They were running well during the warm up and I was happy to have them.

I was invited to nascar start with John and Frank and led out to the pump, then led out over the first hill. Sensing some commotion behind, I pushed the pace around the first loop and into the second mostly to try to thin the pack out, and I think it worked, but John was drafting and flew by, as did Frank, and then I'd burned too many matches and lost them on Mount Foljms.

Rob came flying by on the flats—he must have waxed his skis—and I was in a pack with Steven and Andy. We dropped Andy on a climb on the fourth lap and closed the gap with the pack, but could never really jump on. There was a lot of traffic during the race, too, both people warming up and people getting lapped and not clearing the track. I think Andy needs to be pretty clear next week about this. Since John fell on the last trip up Mt. Foljms when someone didn't clear the way ahead of the pack, I assume he will ask/tell Andy to do so. It would be nice to get some natural snow to use the flats, which renders the whole lapping thing a bit more moot, but we have what we have.

Finished 5th, but only about 15 seconds off the lead. I feel like I should go full master blaster and wax my skis before next week's race, because that's the kind of margin where some fluoros might help.

Ski 50:55 [1] 8.2 mi (6:13 / mi) +127m 5:55 / mi

Out to Weston to ski around on the Real Weston Conditions there. They'd groomed, so it was mostly sugar, but some ice. Lovely. A bit no poles, and then some skating to loosen up after the weekend still. Feeling better. At the end it started flurrying, but now there's a nice band of snow sitting basically on top of the Ski Track, so there may be pretty okay skiing tomorrow. The webcam shows a lovely combination of falling snow and blowing snow.

Run 39:03 [1] 4.8 mi (8:08 / mi) +11m 8:05 / mi

Shake out run post Craftsbury. Went pretty well all things considered.

Ski warm up/down 18:59 [1] 2.8 mi (6:47 / mi) +69m 6:18 / mi

Oh, waxing. It was cold. The snow was a mix of old ice, powder and manmade. It was going to get warmer during the race. Jess and I had no idea what to wax, so we put some klisters on and figured we'd cover them based on the temperature the next morning. I went to test it out. It kicked pretty well, and dragged. I need to get klister skis.

Ski 2:58:26 [3] 31.1 mi (5:44 / mi) +880m 5:16 / mi

Whee Craftsbury! Started in about the fifth row, said hi to college coach Jesse who said I'd beat him by 10 minutes (I don't know if I've ever beaten him in a ski race) and then we were off. My skis seemed fast as I charged up the first hill and slotted in maybe 25th in a pretty chill pack. No carnage.

It was fast. Around the first field and on the rollers, 4:30 miles clicking off, mostly maintaining contact. Although at one point, Frank flew by. Generally I held my own on the climbs, with decent kick sticking around. But on flats, downhills, anything with speed, my skis were super draggy. Why? Because I'm skiing these klister races on long powder skis. These skis are super fast when it's cold powder. But that seems to happen about once a decade. So I am going to buy klister skis. At some point.

Anyway, I started getting passed by people like I was standing still. I still can't quite fathom how I went out so quickly and then got passed by so many people, although a) I think it was maybe 6 people and b) probably a combination of lack of upper body strength and calves still tired from Wednesday. I saw Jesse on the first top hill (the new course is very nice) and he was several minutes behind, so I kept thinking he'd catch up with me, so I tried to go fast. But spent a lot of time in L2 when I should have been in L3.

I probably should have had more to eat in the morning, too. Got to the final feed pretty bonky, having slogged up a hill, but they had these great chew things and I grabbed about 10 and shoved them in my mouth. Almost choked. But got the mental and physical energy for the last bit. Still positive splits, combining fatigue and changing conditions.

But I finshed respectably (29th) and in under 3 hours for a real, actual 50k marathon (watch said 31.09 = 50.03 km) on slow skis in my not-as-good technique without much waxing. Bit race in four weeks.

Oh and I beat Jesse. By 40 minutes.
2 PM

Ski 38:51 [1] 3.7 mi (10:30 / mi) +210m 8:56 / mi

I convinced myself—and Jess, it turns out—that skiing more would loosen us up for the drive and make our back hurt less. Skating, anyway. Plus I said I'd critique her technique (taking open applications for someone to do this for me) since she has this weird V1 thing where she crosses her trailing hand in front of her body. Skiing with Jess is always fun, you get her over the "Jessing" part and she's happy out there.

Oh, also, the Highland Lodge trails are a) not embargoed and b) basically on the way to Hill Farmstead. And I'm not about to go to Craftsbury and not go to HF. We were pretty beat, but the trails there are superb. Big hills, in and out of woods and fields, really Vermonty. We went shooting down a hill, caught up with a shuffler on a snowplow, so turned and went back up for the next trip down.

The one problem with these trails: they go within a mile of Hill Farmstead but don't actually go there! Imagine if you could ski from Craftsbury or Highland Lodge to Hill Farmstead, taste a couple of beers, and ski back? That would be outstanding.
7 PM

Trail Run 31:11 [1] 1.5 mi (20:47 / mi) +308m 12:42 / mi

Drive all the way back? Or go in to Lonesome and check out the new Croo Room? Easy decision for this guy. 30 minutes in with a bottle of Arthur, and a wood stove in the croo room? Kind of chaotic with goofers, but JP was more than accommodating (funny thing that tends to happen when you show up with a bottle of Hill Farmstead).

Ski 29:05 [1] 3.9 mi (7:27 / mi) +140m 6:43 / mi

Left for Craftsbury at 1:30. Probably could have left earlier but hadn't packed the car, etc. 1:30 is late enough you still hit traffic, so it was nearly 4 hours to the COC. Bib pick up, and they were already grooming, so I saw an Ed in the timing room and asked him if skiing south of town (staying right in town, which was great) was outside the embargo. He said it was fine, they weren't going to send us to Highland Lodge on a long, so I went to ski there. Walked over from where I was staying and the trail was superb. Fast, firm, pretty decent track, pretty decent cover. Out 20 minutes, back about 10, some out and back, just enough time to run to the general store and get a sandwich. Back feels okay!

Ski 42:01 [1] 6.2 mi (6:47 / mi) +94m 6:28 / mi

Loops of Weston. Weston conditions, a combination of new manmade snow and ice. At least the guns were running. Back feeling a lot better. Calves feeling worse. Good thing I'm not skiing a 50k classic race on Saturday. Oh, wait.

Ski 12:44 [1] 1.7 mi (7:29 / mi) +15m 7:17 / mi

Got new classic boots, since my c. 2004 ones were on their last legs a few years ago and I didn't want to have my feet mangled at Craftsbury. Sized up one half size, so tried them out, a bit big but I had thin socks on. Kicking on the various forms of snow-like material at Weston (where there even was a track) was arduous, so I left right before the high school race. Driving out I honked my horn as all the kids were lined up at the start and they all went bonkers. Ah, to be 15 again.

Run 41:28 [3] 2.0 mi (20:44 / mi) +709m 9:52 / mi

Warm, a little icy, no real snow? Off to NP. Craftsbury in three days? Pish posh! Let's run a FrogMan1.

Felt pretty good. Positive splits a bit, but sprinting every 5th section. All well and good until I got home and it turns out not doing this for a month and going reasonably hard is bad for your back. Spent some time on the floor stretching. Getting better.

Run 49:36 [1] 6.0 mi (8:16 / mi) +54m 8:03 / mi

Out across the Longfellow, then over Beacon Hill. It was 55˚ for a few minutes, but back in the 30s. Snow should survive for Craftsbury, all signed up!

Ski warm up/down 9:10 [1] 1.4 mi (6:33 / mi) +10m 6:24 / mi

Waxing at the OH was nice. Wax bench out on the porch, good lighting, and plenty of room. Not too cold, either. Put on some klister, and covered it with some colder waxes. When we woke up it was still 22, cold and calm. Then we heard wind and the temperature spiked to 36. Put on some warmer wax. Tested it: it worked, but who knows what the day will bring.

Ski 1:29:25 [3] 15.2 mi (5:53 / mi) +396m 5:27 / mi

And off for the race! I started too late to get a good spot, so burned a lot of matches passing people. Good kick up the first big hill and on to the flats, but my wax was dragging on the flats. So I kicked well up the hills, and gave a lot of time back on the downhills. So I was with a group of a couple of guys: I'd gain a lot on the hills, and then give it all back on the downhills and flats. Some of the flats were brutally windy and it was hard to stay upright. I had some double pole struggles with draggy skis. Hard wax skis and klister too long doesn't help. Will have a shorter pocket for Craftsbury. Finished, respectably but not well, and ate food. Conditions were surprisingly good, kept good kick in the woods although I may have done better with no kick and good glide!
2 PM

Ski 39:26 [1] 5.4 mi (7:18 / mi) +200m 6:33 / mi

Jess and I headed out to skate some. The woods were still solid, but warm on the hills.

Ski 50:11 [1] 6.8 mi (7:23 / mi) +173m 6:50 / mi

Up to Jackson, leaving later than planned, so skiing mostly in the dark. Tracks solid, grooming quite good. Kicking on hard wax. Then there were people at the OH, so it was 62˚ when I walked in!

Run 25:50 [1] 2.6 mi (9:56 / mi)

Train up to Nov Project; way too early to try to run up there.

November Project 15:00 [1] 0.1 mi (2:29:56 / mi)

Silly things with sleds, pushing, pulling, grappling through snow. And other such sundries. Had to leave early because I had a presentation at 8:45 and had to meet and have breakfast beforehand. Of course, there was an accident on Lake Shore so I sat on the bus for 30 minutes. Got to the hotel at 7:57, was in a suit and off to breakfast at 8:09. My roommate was duly impressed. (He's not a morning person.)

Ski 46:01 [1] 7.0 mi (6:34 / mi) +103m 6:17 / mi

Out to Weston to ski and … there's no snow. They haven't made snow in two weeks. So even though it was below freezing for nearly that entire time (yes, with one major meltdown) there is less skiing than there was before Christmas. Mount Weston has maybe 6" of cover. One warm spell away from Weston being unskiable. Not much sense of urgency either, or worry at having wasted one of the best cold snaps in years with a broken pump. I last skied at Weston Jan 3. It didn't go above freezing until Jan 8. But no snow was made. And it was 18 when I was skiing. No snow. Ugh.

Look, you run a company that requires a snowmaking system. Most of the system is easy to replace, except the pump. That's a single point of failure. So if it fails, you need to know what your backup option is. Can't get the parts? Get a temporary pump. Or buy a new pump. Stop going on about cheap skis from Hilton's Tent City on your trail report and tell us what to expect.

I'd say but I'm still angry about this.

Ski warm up/down 3:29 [1] 0.2 mi (17:25 / mi)

Up with parents to ski. Mom had to be back by 4:30 so we went to Waterville. 10 minutes of mystery time when my parents were late picking me up, another 20 when it took them 20 minutes to buy tickets and put their ski boots on. It's like being with MSA juniors again.

A warm up where I tried to teach my dad how to skate better until I got too cold. He needs some time without poles at Weston.

And maybe a better teacher.

Ski 49:04 [1] 8.4 mi (5:50 / mi) +206m 5:26 / mi

Waterville wasn't too bad! Most of Livermore was fine, although near the top it was worse (the downhill slopes were bare; the woods fared much better.) A few water courses not fully filled in, and not for good skis, but fast and pretty fun. A nice skate up, then flying down by people snowplowing (which was pretty skittery when I had to scrub speed around them) and then an out-and-back along the Mad River.

Saw Benai from NP out there, learning to ski. We'll try to get her to Weston …

Ski 20:00 [3] 2.8 mi (7:09 / mi) +271m 5:30 / mi

Then Tripoli side! They'd said watch for water, but there was only one sketchy section with some dirt. Lots of melt down debris, but mostly pretty good, fast skiing. I did a 5x4 minute repeats with full recovery (4 minutes) although full recovery is barely possibly going uphill, so I would go down a bit to get the HR down. Amazing how quickly it crashes on a downhill.

Ski 51:32 [1] 9.0 mi (5:44 / mi) +216m 5:20 / mi

The downhills. Amazing how warm 15˚ feels after MSA. Steep descents were right up to 32 mph.

Saturday Jan 13, 2018 #

Run 1:26:37 [1] 10.0 mi (8:40 / mi) +188m 8:11 / mi

Waited for it to cool down, and other such sundries, and wound up heading out for a long-ish run once it was cold and windy. Out to Brookline and over Summit Ave, then out Comm Ave towards Newton, Rather than turn back around the reservoir, I went up to the top of Heartbreak, took a right, and felt my way back to Kenrick to Brighton. Feeling hungry near the end (going away two straight weeks and not having food in the house has not made for good nutrition choices) through Allston to Whole Foods.

Friday Jan 12, 2018 #

Run 44:42 [1] 5.5 mi (8:08 / mi) +24m 8:01 / mi

Disgustingly warm; finally made it out in shorts and a t-shirt in the heat. A little rainy but not even cold rain. Not good for snow. Usual run around the river. Oh, well.

Run 21:12 [1] 2.8 mi (7:34 / mi) +9m 7:30 / mi

Met Dustin (also NP_MIT) for the run to NP_DC. Running a little late so we pushed the pace a bit, and made it just on time. The reflecting pool is … long!

Run 32:32 [1] 2.6 mi (12:31 / mi) +143m 10:41 / mi

NP DC, with lots of Lincoln Memorial stairs, and some other goodness. Sunrise over the Mall was pretty epic.

Run 40:37 [1] 4.9 mi (8:17 / mi) +58m 8:00 / mi

Run home from NP DC with Dustin. Via Virginia, to say we ran to Virginia.

Tuesday Jan 9, 2018 #

Run 52:28 [1] 6.3 mi (8:20 / mi) +47m 8:08 / mi

In DC for a conference. Morning session? Bah. Run instead. Brick areas were super icy, other areas just slippery. A few speeds on the Mall. Quite foggy lower down, gorgeous views of the Washington Monument floating above the fog. Maybe a metaphor that out of darkness will come light? We can only hope.

LATER SAW SGB AT THE CONFERENCE ZOMG!

Note

Hmm. So I guess I felt too good during the race today. Last year I skied the whole thing around or above 160. Today I was down around 154. More of an L3 effort than an L4. Of course, last year the race was faster with the faster snow. Also it was above 0. Oh, and I skied 2 hours yesterday, pretty hard (I probably should have worn a HRM for that). Recovery is a thing!

I skied Worlds last week at 162-164. So I just didn't go as hard today as I could have.
10 AM

Ski 22:05 [1] 2.9 mi (7:37 / mi) +79m 7:01 / mi

After the weekend to VT got called because of cold (my parents went up and apparently it was a shitshow driving, and real cold, too) I went to Gunstock with CSU kids. Cold in the morning, but got warm—maybe a little too warm—on a warm-up. Snow was cold and slow, but my cold, soft skis were pretty happy.

Ski 46:49 [3] 8.3 mi (5:38 / mi) +237m 5:11 / mi

Race! I started late since I signed up day-of. Immediately caught some guys in front (Barry, Dante—older and younger CSUers) and reeled in a few more. The guy 15 seconds behind me, also a CSUer, stayed close but never got on my heels, but kept me on my toes the whole way. Sam EB passed me having started 9 minutes ahead near the end of the second lap (only lap, and he won) and as he did I said "WEVO Concord, 89.1, WEVH Hanover 91.3, WEVJ Jackson 99.5 …" and tried to stay with him but he was hammering for the finish.

Mostly alone the last lap, but I couldn't drop my 15 second guy. I tried to push down and up the hills, as did he, and he beat me by one second! The results were all screwy, so I don't know how I fared against the other master blasters (except, yeah, I lost to Sam).

Ski 13:06 [1] 0.8 mi (16:23 / mi) +30m 14:40 / mi

Skiing around to watch the women's race. I was able to attach a bell on my pole strap: automatic cowbell! This will continue.

Ski 23:08 [1] 2.7 mi (8:34 / mi) +79m 7:51 / mi

After some more food, Jess and I went out for an easy lap. With a puffy and warm temperatures it was … nice!

Ski 1:56:36 [1] 13.8 mi (8:27 / mi) +720m 7:16 / mi

Sitting in the morning looking at where to ski. Weston: windy. North? Cold. West? Hmm. Northfield! Went late, arrived around 2:30, trails close at 4:30, can I ski the about half marathon course I think you could set up there without crossing over itself and doubling back only on the wide road (and a 100m section of another trail)?

Sort of. I was a few minutes late getting back and they waited for me because that is their policy (also, I think no one else was there past 4, so they could have left early had it not been for me).

Skiing was sort of comfortable in the woods, the last big downhill was pretty brutal. Those trails are so fun! Lots of climb, too; a marathon there (2x this course) would have close to 1500m of climb.

Run 1:12:13 [1] 7.5 mi (9:38 / mi) +49m 9:26 / mi

Flood blizzard! Went on a run in the snow and wind in the afternoon. No traffic, not bad traction. Down to see the remnants of the storm surge, then back to Trader Joes. Stopped to push a guy's car at one point.

Ski 43:06 [1] 6.2 mi (6:57 / mi) +79m 6:41 / mi

Busy day, out to Weston before meetings. 25˚, sunny, perfect grooming, just really lovely. I did no poles for 20 minutes, put on my poles, and my pole strap broke. Luckily I can swap the strap from my rollerski pole on to my normal pole for now (other than not saying "Triac" it's the same) So, did no poles the rest of the time.

Ski warm up/down 18:05 [1] 2.9 mi (6:14 / mi) +28m 6:03 / mi

Out to Weston for Worlds. Checked traffic, minimal, but then was backed up to the tolls, so I only got about 20 minutes of skiing in. Realized I had storage wax on my skis, but there were people in the wax tent I figured I could borrow a scraper and brush from. This happened:

"Can I borrow a scraper?"
"Sure."
"Hey you're NNHS? Cool! I skied for NNHS in 2002."
"I was born in 2002."

So then I finished scraping and went to ski. One lap no poles, one with. 15˚ never felt so warm (at Weston).

Ski race 20:07 [4] 4.4 mi (4:34 / mi) +46m 4:26 / mi

Worlds started and was pretty benign. Nice to have good conditions and the wide climb up Mount Foljms. The front strung out pretty quickly, and I was on the back of the pack with Andy. Andy wasn't moving too fast, and I jumped by him to tail Chris Stock (I think?) and John, skiing with Frank and a guy in a bike kit. The bike guy had mad watts, but no technique.

Chris and John pulled away, and it was me, Frank and bike guy. I led most of the second lap and then bike guy went in front and took a pull. He has figured out V1, but not V2 or V2A. I think Frank and I both realized this, and we let him pull around the flats conserving energy behind. On the downhill back by the river I rode his draft and put in some V2 and 10m, with Frank right behind me. I pushed the next climb but Frank had a bit more in the tank, and led on to the final turn and I couldn't match, but we were well in front of bike guy.

He came up to us after the race and asked how to get better at skiing the flats and we mumbled something about better technique trying to catch our breaths. The answer is probably something like "do this for three or four more years every day."

Edit: oh hey look the cyclist guy won the Mount Washington hill climb. If he learns to ski he's going to smoke us all.

Ski warm up/down 21:50 [1] 2.9 mi (7:32 / mi) +31m 7:17 / mi

Pretty trashed, skied around for social ski hour. Should have maybe gone a little longer, but I didn't have food with me and had to get home for dinner. Note to self: before the next World Champs (three weeks out, traveling the next two) make sure to have dinner with to eat after. There should be an option to pay a little extra and have a catered dinner (i.e., pizza) at 8:00. Actually, this would be an excellent idea!

Run 55:10 [1] 6.8 mi (8:07 / mi) +40m 7:58 / mi

Had a 1:35 reservation at the Apple store to get my bricked computer looked at. So no skiing, because the timing wouldn't work and I wouldn't really want to ski if I couldn't go somewhere fun like Northfield. Went for a run instead, since I have to do some of that. Nice run along the frozen river. 10 felt warm until I went in to wind across the Longfellow. Legs feel good despite not having run in a couple of weeks. Probably good to take a shorter day every so often after volume.
