Rollerski 1:18:31 [1] 12.2 mi (6:26 / mi) +212m 6:06 / mi

Out to Chesterville for some skiing … figured I'd go easy on my legs after yesterday's fun, probably the right decision. DP out, with some speeds, then skating back. Nice roads!

Trail Run 4:49:57 [1] 18.0 mi (16:07 / mi) +1203m 13:20 / mi

Hard time making decisions today. I was up at 0615 and Lincoln was doing a Presi Traverse, and I almost jumped in to action for that except I would have had to a) not sleep two more hours, b) the weather on the ridge looked cloudy and windy and c) Labor Day weekend = crowding. My parents' friends were visiting and one of them was going up to Saddleback to do something (which would have worked well had I wanted to repeat last summer's 33 miles sufferfest) but that seemed like a bit much, even if I now have a water filter. Plus he was leaving early and then hiking with an AMC group with an unknown pace/finishing/meeting time. The decision was to go back to sleep.

Good decision.

I decided to head to the Wild River Wilderness. Reasonably close, new trails and, I figured, less crowded. I was right: I pulled into the Burnt Mill parking lot at the trailhead and I was the only car there. So I set off jogging. Steep bits up the trail and I attained the ridge seeing no one (saw maybe 20 people all day, about 1 MPG which is not bad for a holiday weekend) and then shuffled along the ridge. Climb up West Royce, then a long descent, and then a rolling ascent. Portions runnable, some nice views, and a lovely day.

I got up to the Baldface Circle trail, which had more traffic, and took a right down Eagle Link, which had decidedly less. This was the slowest going of the day. The trail was overgrown with bushes which made the footing hard to see, so I spent a good deal of time making sure not to trip. It was interspersed with nice woodsy runnable sections, but the overgrown sections were tough. The availability of raspberries did not help my speed.

But right around mile 10 of the whole thing, I hit the runnable trail. From there on out, with a couple of minor exceptions, the whole trail was runnable. I kind of knew this but it is always nice laying down 8s and 9s on a trail, you feel like you are flying. Then I hit the road back to the car and raun some sub-8s, which was good, because I need to do marathon training, and running sub-8s at the end of a long "run" is probably not too bad.

On the way out I pulled off by the side of the road and ran down and lay in the river which was refreshing but decidedly not cold. Then I saw a car stopped in the middle of the road by a bog and I figured "there must be a moose" and yup browsing across the bog was a moose so I looked at the moose.

Run 40:55 [3] 4.9 mi (8:21 / mi) +312m 6:58 / mi

It was Indian(a Jones) runs today at NP. I went out with the front but my legs were maybe tired. Lasted three full repeats of the hills and then dropped off for the last one (and went and took the stairs up). Glad I'd gone hard, though, was plenty warm enough to jump in the pool.

More garbage GPS. GPS gave away nearly 100m of elevation (luckily I know how much each hill is) because, who knows. One issue is that Garmin/Strava doesn't ground truth, so if the barometric elevation is off it just keeps the garbage. But really have not been impressed with this watch (and may jump ship to a Suunto).

Run 41:49 [1] 2.0 mi (20:54 / mi) +709m 9:57 / mi

Home in time to get to NP, so, NP!

Maybe not the best decision. Legs felt pretty darned heavy although I shot for 60. Made it to 30 in 23 minutes, but then started going much slower. Got to the sun and turned back, was happy with the 50 sections.

Harry was doing 370, Scott 501. They'd been going all night. I'm happy with my 2000m in 12 hours, TYVM.

Rollerski 1:16:21 [1] 12.1 mi (6:19 / mi) +57m 6:13 / mi

Saw on the Twitter machine that there was new pavement out on the bike path. And the weather models said it wasn't going to start to pour rain until 2. Well twist my arm.

83 bus out, 1:20 DP (giving the legs a rest!), Red Line back. One fare. And the mile of new pavement is nice, but it makes the old pavement in Cambridge and Lexington (and the cobbles) that much more noticeable.

Trail Run 2:36:43 [1] 8.0 mi (19:35 / mi) +1202m 13:21 / mi

It was a beautiful day. I thought I should be doing track and rollerskiing, since I am running a marathon this fall and it is August.

Then I realized it was going to be the beautiful-est day of the week. And Franconia is only 2 hours away.

Well, 2:40, if you don't leave until 2 p.m. (which is now rush hour in Boston) and have to stop for gas.

So, I left the parking lot at 4:40. Not really great planning, but it gave me three hours until dark and I had a headlamp and I know this trail. And I charged up the mountain. My legs felt surprisingly fresh and while I wasn't redlining, I was pushing into L3 most of the way up. A few incredulous goofers (is there any other kind?) saying "are you doing the whole thing" and I responded with "yes" rather than "race you to the bottom." But not much company on the trails: this is a run to do on weekdays anymore.

Hit the summit in 1:03, so not quite an hour, but not bad. 1:33 to Lafayette, 1:50 to the hut, and plenty of light for the OBP. Hit the croo cut and made it to the car in 2:36, a new PR for this loop, but then I looked and saw that Jess ran it in sub-2. Yikes.

Enough time to dry off, change, and still make it to Market Basket in Concord before closing time!

Run warm up/down 16:40 [1] 2.2 mi (7:34 / mi)

Late for NP, legs tired, but nice and cool and breezy. Saw Joev ahead of me as we got to the deck location. Yelled at him and he moved!

November Project 9:00 [1] 1.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

NP things.

Run 21:02 [3] 2.2 mi (9:34 / mi)

Scamper home, not as fast.
8 AM

Run 24:12 [1] 3.3 mi (7:20 / mi)

Something I've wanted to do for a while: when I saw a six point ride possible on a Blue Bike, I ran out to take it. Then ran back to the rack and took another. And another. Took four rides for a total of 18 points (had I brought my phone, I would have gotten even more, by going to the right rack for each 15 minutes) and extended my membership by a week.

Very silly indeed.
