Tamar Triple Day 1: Middle Distance Race, Cookworthy Moor.

I didn't particularly enjoy the last couple of orienteering events I ran in my home county (Devon), but I have to admit that, after only running one day of this year's Tamar Triple, I'm impressed. I quite enjoyed running in this part of the forest. Even the wet weather didn't put me off. Hopefully the forest on the other side of the road (used for the other two days) is as good.

Although the area used for Day 1 is quite small, it is surprisingly varied. About half the area is runnable, with little in the way of brashings and brambles. The area is fairly flat and has few paths, but a moderately extensive ditch network makes up for the lack of other features.

I didn't get off to the greatest of starts, losing a few minutes on a fairly easy first control. No. 12 was my other biggish mistake. I decided to head straight through an area of green nastiness, which slowed me right down. Also, when I emerged from the green, I should have just headed to the east as I had been forced to veer west through the green, but instead I contined west and relocated off a control on a hide about 200m away from the one I wanted.

Overall very enjoyable, looking forward to tomorrow!

Note

Noticed today that legendary orienteering caterer Wilf's now sell shortbread cakes. I've not seen them before at Wilf's - are they new or have I been blind?! Either way the one I bought was yummy and good to eat while I sat in my car to keep away from the rain.

Circuits intervals 1:00:00 [4]

First circuits session for two weeks and first with equipment for three weeks. Since I hadn't really done any exercise the previous week I wasn't at all surprised that I found this harder going than usual.

Didn't want to push too hard so I went for another 4km run up to the trigpoint. Thankfully I didn't get a stitch this time, but the paths were muddier than ever and that slowed me down a bit. Having said that, my time is an estimate since once again I forgot to stop my stopwatch!

My first Summer Series event this year, missing Shotover due to injury and Youlbury due to being in a different continent. Brill is quite a technical area but it is plagued with nettles. I wore my gaiters (for the first time in absolutely ages, I can't remember the last time I used them!) and that kept the nettles off my lower leg. However, my legs are tingling somewhat from the knees upwards!

Physically I felt superb. I was running quickly and it felt easy to run. I'm not sure what it was that has led to this (resting last week perhaps?) but it certainly was good running as fast as I was. Technically however it was another matter. In particular the Z lap of the course (I did X1ZY) had two very short legs and both of them threw me. Number 7 was a lot more visible than number 6, and so I ran straight from number 5 to number 7 and then had to run back. 9-10 was the other short leg. I started by heading off at 180° to the direction I wanted, wandered out of the green, got confused, walked about a bit and eventually wandered back in to the same area I found number 9. I also seemed to have a lot of difficulty finding number 1 on the Z course.

I've no idea how long I took. I've put my time down as 1 minute less than Kat's, and have just copied the distance she quoted. I've also estimated how many controls I spiked, since I only have a copy of the Y course with me and can't remember the locations of all the controls on the Z course.

Overall a bit of a disappointing run. Hopefully next weekend's event at Wittenham Clumps will be better.

Up to the Cumnor Hurst trigpoint and back. The time is estimated since I forgot to stop my stopwatch as I returned. I took it fairly easy since I haven't run for quite a while now. I had a bit of a stitch towards the end and so walked/ran very slowly, but other than that felt okay. The paths over Cumnor Hill were their usual muddy selves, although the grass has grown up a bit and you can run on that instead.

Earlier today I popped into town to get some new insoles for my running shoes. I figured that I didn't really need a new pair of shoes as the shoes themselves were still perfectly usable, it was just the insoles that were knackered. Also, a new pair of shoes would cost a lot more than the three quid the insoles cost me!

It definitely felt good to be back out running again, even if I wasn't running particularly fast, I couldn't really feel my injury any more, hopefully the rest has done it good and it will go away now. It's also the first time in a long while I've been for a run on a Monday. :)

Note

Got back from Jerusalem late last night. Since I've forgotten my Attackpoint password (my browser fills it in automatically), I was unable to post comments on anyone's logs, nor write any comments such as this one. So a few of them have appeared today.

I have to say I didn't particularly enjoy the whole trip, for a number of reasons which I won't detail here. I am glad to be back in the UK, even if the weather here is miserable and the weather in Jerusalem was almost continuously sunny.

I didn't really get the chance to do much in the way of exercise whilst away. About the most exercise I had all week was speed-walking along the corridors in Heathrow Terminal 4 from the aeroplane to passport control, where I managed to overtake a lot of people even though they had the advantage of walking on the conveyor belt! Nonetheless I feel quite good physically, so I shall buy another pair of running shoes tomorrow and get some training in for the coming weekend's orienteering.
