Tamar Triple Day 3: Regional Event with Hågaby Variations, Railway Cottages & Halwill Moor

This was the final day of the three days of the Tamar Triple, using the central section of the forest. This race consisted of three loops, returning to the same spectator control (which was also the first control) after each loop. I didn't hear anyone cheering me on from the spectator enclosure, but then again, there wasn't really anybody I knew there.

I've run quite a few orienteering races in (10 + epsilon) minutes/km, and today's race is another one to add to that list. Despite that, I felt that I had a reasonably good run.

The first loop (Railway Cottages) used the northwest corner of the forest. Yesterday's first control also dipped into this area. This section had the most contours and was mostly runnable, although there are a few splodges of green. I lost time heading the wrong way out of 3 and lost a couple of minutes at #5 after not having had a plan. Other than that I got on fairly well with this loop.

The second loop was over Halwill Moor, which, despite the name, was forest as opposed to moorland. This section, at 3.7km, was the longest loop. It ran through a flatter forest with a lot of green nastiness, which did limit where the course could go. I was perhaps silly in going through the green to #16, especially considering that I veered out to one side and then made a small 90° error. My worst mistake on this loop was at number 14, where I was thrown by a number of unmarked rides/extraction tracks. I should have used the fact that the control was before a re-entrant and should have run on to that instead of running up and down the rides.

The final loop (dubbed 'Picnic Area') was a short 900m loop with only four controls (not counting the spectator control at either end of the loop). Other than veering a little off-course to #25 I didn't really have a problem with this part.

And so that's the end of it. Thanks a lot to DEVON OC and KERNO for organising three days of enjoyable orienteering in a brand new forest in Devon, it was well worth the drive back to my parents' place for the bank holiday weekend.

Tamar Triple Day 2: Higher Whiteleigh

Today's day, a standard Regional Event, used the northernmost part of Cookworthy forest, leaving the middle for the last day tomorrow. It perhaps wasn't quite as runnable as yesterday, and it was also less flat. However, the weather today being lot drier than yesterday didn't stop today's area from being a complete mudbath in places.

Although I felt tired from running through all ther mud, I didn't feel that I made that many mistakes navigationally. Like yesterday I lost a bit of time at #1, after not really having a plan for it. #7 should have been easy - there's a blindingly obvious vegetation boundary corner nearby - but I still managed to lose about a minute on it. #10 I'm not convinced was entirely in the right place - I got to the area and found a number of people looking for it. And finally with number 16 I ended up 60m too far to the north of the control as I emerged onto a rough-open area.

The mud did slow me down, but despite that it was nice to get round the course in sub-10 minutes per kilometre. And as I left, I noticed that I had the fastest time (so far) on M21S today. However, the Kromhout brothers seemed not to have finished then - I strongly suspect they'll beat me, as they did yesterday.

Tamar Triple Day 1: Middle Distance Race, Cookworthy Moor.

I didn't particularly enjoy the last couple of orienteering events I ran in my home county (Devon), but I have to admit that, after only running one day of this year's Tamar Triple, I'm impressed. I quite enjoyed running in this part of the forest. Even the wet weather didn't put me off. Hopefully the forest on the other side of the road (used for the other two days) is as good.

Although the area used for Day 1 is quite small, it is surprisingly varied. About half the area is runnable, with little in the way of brashings and brambles. The area is fairly flat and has few paths, but a moderately extensive ditch network makes up for the lack of other features.

I didn't get off to the greatest of starts, losing a few minutes on a fairly easy first control. No. 12 was my other biggish mistake. I decided to head straight through an area of green nastiness, which slowed me right down. Also, when I emerged from the green, I should have just headed to the east as I had been forced to veer west through the green, but instead I contined west and relocated off a control on a hide about 200m away from the one I wanted.

Overall very enjoyable, looking forward to tomorrow!

Note

Noticed today that legendary orienteering caterer Wilf's now sell shortbread cakes. I've not seen them before at Wilf's - are they new or have I been blind?! Either way the one I bought was yummy and good to eat while I sat in my car to keep away from the rain.

Circuits intervals 1:00:00 [4]

First circuits session for two weeks and first with equipment for three weeks. Since I hadn't really done any exercise the previous week I wasn't at all surprised that I found this harder going than usual.

Running 22:00 [3] 4.0 km (5:30 / km) +70m 5:03 / km

Didn't want to push too hard so I went for another 4km run up to the trigpoint. Thankfully I didn't get a stitch this time, but the paths were muddier than ever and that slowed me down a bit. Having said that, my time is an estimate since once again I forgot to stop my stopwatch!
