Latvian O-week, Day 4 - Open 1 **Middle Laurenci**
A very easy course on the Middle Distance map but in a different section of the forest. Only the last two controls of my course into the finish did touch what they had been through. Mostly trail walking but some very steep sections going both down and up - I did a few shortcuts through the terrain to get some variation.
Results, Day 4

Sightseeing in Sigulda and surroundings (Gutmann cave and watching the action at the zipline/cable car + kids amusement park).

Latvian O-week, Day 3 - Open 3 ** Forest sprint Riga**
Forest sprint at the Latvian Ethnography Open Air Museum in Riga. Very easy course but nice terrain where I did a few detours to avoid too much walking on roads. Lots of old buildings - I had eight of my first nine controls on old wooden buildings, two of which were wind mills.
Results, Day 3

Major problems to find the competition since our GPS first took us too the locked back gate of the museum while the correct route was doubling back on the highway after passing the gates.

Walk 1:30:00 [1]

Rest day for both WOC and spectator races. Sightseeing in Sigulda at the Turaida Castle - being rebuilt from ruins so very much was "fake" but still interesting.
On the way back we also checked out the arena for the Middle Distance being finalized and discussed several options for how the courses would go before passing through the arena.

Walk 15:00 [1]

Walk back from downtown Sigulda to our pension.

Note

We all went to the IOF IT Commission open meeting at Hotel Sigulda in the evening. There were a number of presentations on different solutions for timekeeping, e-punching and GPS. Both hardware and software were presented with some interesting new products.

Latvian O-week, Day 2 - Open 1 **Long Carnikava**
Nice open terrain in the forest very close to the beach by the Baltic. Some tricky sections with lots of sandy trails but in general very easy with mostly walking on trails. Lars A passed me about half way around the course.
Results, Day 2

After the race we drove down to the beach on a very bumpy road/trail. Burken was the only one going into the water though.

Rehab 15:00 [1]

Some exercises in our hotel room before breakfast.

Walk 2:00:00 [1]

Walking down to Kronwaldas Park for the WOC Sprint Qualifications that started at 9 AM. Very tight races on very running centered courses. All Swedes went through as expected. Only unexpected results were Ivan Sirakov and Frederic Tranchand missing the finals by just a few seconds in a very tight heat being just over 30 seconds behind the best time.

Latvian O-week, Day 1 **Sprint Riga**
Only Carl Henry and Burken ran in the spectator races - with Burken arriving by taxi from the Airport around 7 minutes before his start time (missed maybe 1.30).
Results, Day 1

After the spectator races we walked over to the Old Town for the WOC Sprint Finals. Stopped on the way for some lunch and had to leave some of the huge portion of french fries to get to the start on time.

Exciting races as always - very close for the medals with Tove losing the gold (or Maja winning it) on the last two controls and Daniel H winning the mens by under two seconds ahead of Tim R.
Some controversy afterwards over the placing of the start flag and the final flag too close to each other with several competitors losing time "punching" the start before the correct control.

Rehab 15:00 [1]

Some mixed exercises on the ferry.

Walk 2:00:00 [1]

Sightseeing in Riga after checking in at the hotel.
First walking from the hotel to find the "Hop on hop off" bus tour. After the one hour tour we walked over the impressive Central Market where we had lunch.
Walking back through the Old Town to locate where tomorrows WOC and spectator races would be. No signs of preparation but we were definitely in the right place.
Back to the hotel for a well needed shower and some rest before Carl Henry showed up. Out for dinner near the Swedish Embassy.
A very hot and humid day (and later night) for walking around. Time is an estimate but were out for 5 hours.
