Was going to go a few minutes longer but was meant to be a more chill run and Seth wasn't feeling so hot because of running camp. In a bit of a resting period anyway so I don't mind.

Similar terrain to yesterday's middle, but a tad harder, so I'm very happy with the improvement from yesterday to today. A few small screwups, but nothing to cry over.

My watch claims we had 14 meters of climb on our run, but I don't believe. It just doesn't seem possible.

Orienteering race (Relay) 37:10 [5] 5.6 km (6:38 / km)
shoes: VJ Sports Bold

1. Not good in the circle, Swiss guy led me in.
2. Hit the control with some umph.
3. Too far right, green pushes you around, again led in by Swiss.
4. Chasing Swiss runners like nobody's business.
5. Bad route choice + unfortunate forking = lost time
6. Same thing happened in the long, I got dragged into that yellow open area way off the line. Both times I was compassing, I don't get why it happened again but nothing deathly bad.
7. Well executed.
8. More complex area on the map, very green, missed and hit forked control, corrected and done deal.
9. First of all, crappy compass out of 8. Second of all, getting to the end of the road I started going to ten and fixed it, but Canada passed me because of it.
10. Running with the pack.
11. My favorite leg of JWOC. Orienteering wasn't difficult but my compass into it was prime. I was at the back of the pack with Canada as Australia started pulling away, but we start sprinting and blow past several runners and catch Australia, great feeling.
12. Good.
Finish was fast.

Orienteering race 1:32:23 [5] 13.15 km (7:02 / km) +168m 6:36 / km
shoes: VJ Sports Bold

Good race, I'm pretty satisfied with it. No painful mistakes, just a few route regrets and a buble (1:30) on 13.
https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2017jwocLM/?v=m3
1. Good compass line, good approach, all good here.
2. Should have taken the road, so route-regret #1. Again, good compass, around the hill, through the reentrant, but a ton of hesitation getting on that ride. A lot of regret could have been avoided just taking the road.
3. Good route choice. This should be my route-regret number two, during the race I was frustrated halfway through the route that I didn't go left on the road that basically goes to the control, but comparing people who saw the option and took it to me and others who took my route, they were about the same time, so I think my route worked fine. Good idea, good execution, good attack.
4. Compass, gottem.
5. Pushed off my line by green slash, hit cliff, corrected and hit.
6. Going directly over the hill was a lot faster, as done by Izzy, Emma W, and Christian. There's a massive cliff to catch you so there wasn't much of a reason for me to go around. Safe route, but needless.
7. Straight, compass, good.
8. Cameraman helped me find it...
9. Good stuff.
10. Rides are confusing.
11. Straight as an arrow.
12. Got really close to screwing up my compass, but fixed. Mistake avoided.
13. Rock was further up the hill than I thought it would be, apparently on the second contour, not the first. One and a half minute mistake trying to figure out where that rock was, no good relocation feature or real attack point.
14. 30-40 seconds at 13 trying to figure out what to do. I'm pretty sure I picked the right route so good stuff. That last bit was pretty tricky-dicky and the rides were messed up, so ignored them, read hills, compass on the contour, and hit that.
15. Compass was good.
16. Good navigation there, a tiny bit of compass.
17. Tried to hit the ride in the white woods north of the line. Failed miserably and just kept running through shitty double green slash. Wonderful.
18. Yellow, in.
19. That stuff was absolute trash to run through. Good nav though.
20. Gotta chugga choo choo straight over that hillside.
21. That yellow stuff was not good.
Finish.
Overall good race, navigationally sound and didn't die.

Orienteering 16:15 [3] 3.5 km (4:39 / km) +60m 4:17 / km
shoes: VJ Sports Bold

Forgot to review the sprint...
https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2017jwocSM/?v=m3
Be warned, the GPS track is trash.
1. I think I took the good route.
2. Yup.
3. Great.
4. Some debate about whether you should go past five but I think my route is fine.
5. Splendid.
6. Left or right? Picked right.
7. Yeah.
8. Mmhm
9. Sounds about right.
10. Uh-huh
11. Interesting.
12. Lol what 12? (mispunched) Skipped it, too cool for 12 apparently.
13. Hit it pretty well from 11.
14. Could've gone straighter but it really didn't matter much.
15. Check.
16. Slippery af.
17. Left or right, picked left, I think that's good?
18. Superb.
19. Almost screwed up, ran on the lawn and realized there was no opening, went back to the left. Fricken hedges. Also might've been faster to go around the top and under the light gray.
20. Good stuff.
21. Phenomenal.
22. Wow.
23. Mind-boggling.
Finish.
Happy with how I raced, just annoyed I got that DQ after not reading the twelfth control. Otherwise routes were well picked. Good reading ahead throughout.

Orienteering race (B-Final) 34:04 [5] 3.5 km (9:44 / km)
shoes: VJ Sports Bold

https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2017jwocMMB/?v=m3
Not a very good first half of the race but drastic improvement in the second half so that's a good turnaround.
1: It wasn't necessary to climb that hill at the end but I didn't realize the saddle and I thought it would help my approach.
2: Parallel error and attempts to relocate. I didn't realize that the control I hit was my 5, I was busy trying to work out where I was and hitting number 2. 4 minute mistake.
3: Good navigation, just slow and off the back of a bad control.
4: Same as 3.
5: Bad compass line, but noticed and decided to just hit the corner of the vegetation boundary instead to go in. Small mistake.
6: It wasn't a bad plan, I should have just gone more left through the yellow rough open. Also approaching six, got pulled left.
7: Spiked.
8: I think the road was the right choice.
9: Pretty good navigation.
10: Yeah, at this point in the course I was orienteering well, hitting controls properly, so that was an inner relief.
11: Nailed it.
12: Whoops pulled left by the track.
13: Overran the trail, plus where I got on the trail was a little disoriented. At least I realized.
Finish.

Orienteering race 31:32 [5] 4.0 km (7:53 / km) +100m 7:00 / km
shoes: VJ Sports Bold

https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2017jwocMQM3/?v=m3
Leg 1: Good navigation, zigged a little too much but I think it worked out.
2: Good.
3: Hesitation with the green, need to grow some balls next time. Thick stuff though, hard to see where to proceed.
4: Spur running.
5: Grew some balls, straight through the green. Compass in green was rough and hesitation at the road, otherwise good.
6: I think road was right choice.
7: Went in early instead of road bend, and while it was still navigable I could have been faster by going up later.
8: Compass.
9: Got sucked.down by the reentrant, a little bit of trouble in the circle but nothing terrible.
10-13 and finish: How fast can you run?
14: Too far right, should have gone way more direct.

Note

Posting to the official blog is difficult on my phone, so I'm going to keep on keeping on right here, at my digital abode. I'm feeling pretty restless, looking for something to do, so here I am blogging. Yesterday we swam partway across the lake and back after treading water for a while. Peter is a very strong swimmer, and it showed as he outswam us all back to the beach. I really did not want to touch the ground, I have bad experiences with seaweed at home at Perch Lake, I did not want to deal with that. This one ladder we climbed was hella dirty. This morning we spent a ton of time playing soccer and throwing frisbees and...trying to hit balls with frisbees. What a fun morning not repetitive at all. We played some card games and went slacklining again, which Tyra is an absolute beast at. Forwards, backwards, not an issue any way. Julia, Siri, Tyra, and Izzy did really well and got to six, seven, eight, nine steps. I got to four I think.

We're eating kebabs tonight. I do love kebabs.

We were at the beach yesterday (because we went swimming) and met this cool Latvian guy and his family, and he knew what orienteering and JWOC is! Gotta love Europe for the orienteering knowledge. Apparently the Estonian president spoke at WOC, which is awesome.

We played Hearts and I got owned. I got less owned in cribbage and came second in a four-person game. Card games, man, love them but I need to suck less.

We played a few games of soccer tennis yesterday, I always love me some soccer tennis, clearly the superior version of tennis. This one guy in a golf kart asked us if we had seen a biker in a red suit, hopefully he didn't murder anyone. I asked Anton if he was missing, but he assured me it was something else. Because criminals are more common than lost people. There was a triathlon here yesterday, totally not missing from that. No way. Makes no sense.

Julia and Tyra are back from WOC! They did a fantastic job and we're glad to have them back here in Finland. What a sprint relay, right? Great Britain and Switzerland had a GREAT time on the third leg, what a party.

2. Trail, yellow, attack from east, in.
3. Road, spur.

5. Yellow spur, over hill, missed to the right, lost a little time, to the left, gottem.
6. Reentrant.
7. Hill, ride, left into depression.
8. Whoops. Over hill, tried to follow yellow but ended up following green because they look similar. Hit five, tried again, drifted left, relocated on road after a while, hit it.
9. Run ridge to the right of marsh, in.
10. Ridge, trail, compass.
11. Compass.

Physical course, it was rough on the ankles early on, the climb to the road to three was tiring. Leg 8 was pretty unnecessary, why bother making a leg like that with minimal choice making. Did really well on 8-13 because I had the long leg to thoroughly plan it.
