| running tempo 33:53 [3] | ||
| Dragged myself out of bed this morning and it was supposed to be a slow run because of my dad's ankle, but I don't know if I was tired or what, but it felt pretty fast to me... we just did the river run but cut off a bit on the end because I had to get to get ready for school. | ||
Monday Oct 30 | ||
| school sports (badminton) 30:00 [2] | ||
| Played some games of badminton in gym which was a lot of fun. I actually broke a sweat too which is surprising. | ||
| running tempo 13:00 [4] | ||
| Ran to Venturers with Molly which was a lot of fun except that I was kinda scared that we were going to get mugged or something. | ||
Sunday Oct 29 | ||
| orienteering race (score-o) 30:00 [4] | ||
| Did the score-o which was a lot of fun except for the fact that I was wearing hiking boots, 3 pairs of pants and 6 sweaters because I didnt' get a chance to drop some of my clothes off. Didn't read my map as much as I should've mostly because I knew exactly where the control was going to be, and I was pretty busy looking out for puddles. I was racing Eric and he got back about 10sec before me, but he only punched 2 or 3 of the controls whereas I punched them all. Hehe, that's where I lost all of my time... ;-) | ||
Saturday Oct 28 | ||
| hiking 3:00:00 [1] | ||
| Spent 3hrs following the scouts around through the woods in the rain while they followed the arrow. It was soooo much fun..... not ...... Anyways, the morning group didn't work because the other GPS's were on the wrong UTM code so everything was off by 200m. Really big problem. Thankfully, I knew where all of the ribbons where so I kinda acted as the arrow. During lunch, we fixed the GPS's and so the afternoon was much better. I got these 2 scouts that were really unenthusiastic (spelling?) but we did get to all of them except for 3. Mostly because I'd say, "Just up ahead there are 3 flags really close together, lets do those and then we'll go back." It worked pretty well. They were really unprepared for the weather though, they both had jeans that kept falling down so I just walked along behind laughing to myself, hehe. | ||
Friday Oct 27 | ||
| Note | ||
| Heading out camping this weekend with the scouts but it's supposed to rain non-stop...
Hopefully I'll be able to get the hill in and some running around...
| hiking 1:30:00 [1] | ||
| Set out the flags for tomorrow's GPS course in the dark at 9:00. It was quite interesting. There were 6 of us all in this train following eachother through the woods. Since I know Camp Traill like that back of my hand, we didn't need the GPS too much except for trying to find a kybo and a cliff in the middle of nowhere... | ||
Wednesday Oct 25 | ||
| running race 15:00 [5]3.4 km (4:25 / km) vdot: 43.2 | ||
| Not sure what my exact time was, but I do know that it was the worst run of my entire existence!!!! I usually don't cramp up, but as I was running down the giant hill, this humongous excrutiating totally awful cramp attacked me and I could hardly breath let alone run!!! It was the worst most painful thing I've ever had while running. I lost the front pack then and 2 more people passed me. I tried to catch one of them at the end, but I had nothing left because of that stupid cramp!!! :( So I came 7th which is a pretty good placing after almost dieing but I was hoping for better... | ||
| C • That's okay! 3 | ||
Tuesday Oct 24 | ||
| running 22:33 [2] | ||
| Just a short and slow run to see if I'd be a total cripple after the rogaine but I think I'm prety good. If I get a good sleep tonight I should be great for tomorrow. I just noticed that my knees were sore and my legs just felt overall pretty tired. Any advice on what to do so I'll be in tip top shape for cities tomorrow??? Carb boom??? hehe... ;-) | ||
Saturday Oct 21 | ||
| orienteering race (Rogaine) 8:02:00 [3]*** 48 km (10:02 / km) | ||
| spiked:31/33c weight:43.1kg | ||
| Did my first 8hr rogaine and it was quite the experience!!! The first 6hrs were a blast, but the last 2 were just pure pain. We started off doing a loop on the real orienteering map picking up 12 controls over 14.5lkm in about 2hrs. We planned our route so that instead of having to do a lot of climb on the way back, we're going down the "hill" and then on the way back we'd only have a gradual climb up. Didn't make any mistakes on that map, spiked all of the controls pretty well. There's a lot of trail running but it's still pretty nice running in the woods despite all of the saplings... One of our neighbours ran past us on the trail which is pretty funny so we told her what we were doing and she wished us goodluck. The 2nd map was 1:25000 which is much bigger than I've ever orienteered with. The road run to our first control seemed to take forever because it was 1.5km!!! Our plan here was to pick up some controls on the way out, and then the rest on the way back. The only setbacks were that there was A LOT of water, and not just knee deep swamps, these are full fledged ponds and rivers that you had to find a log or a rock 1/2 way across. That slowed us down quite a bit and there were a lot of hills. We only made one mistake on this map which is pretty good considering the lack of features on the map. It was near the end and we had just laboured up 60m hill so we didn't want to "unclimb" ourselves. Our plan was to controur around the hill and then hit the trail. It was a very indistinct trail covered in leaves so we must've walked right over it but fortunately we found a swamp and relocated off that. There was another 2km leg that we did really well... although we had to cross over 3 large streams/swamps to get to it. I got a few soakers on that one!!:) Coming out of that control was just awful!!! Coming out to the control there was 300m of swamp with deadfall and trees everywhere, it was just sooo thick. I nearly fell down and kissed the trail once we finally got there it was so bad!!! A couple controls after that one, there was a lot of trail running and I hate to admit it, but we weren't really following on the map so when we got maybe 5min down it took us awhile to figure out when to cut in. We had gone up and down and up and as we started to go down, we got a little suspcious. Turned out that we had to go down and then climb up another 30m!!! Brutal!! Once we got to the aid station way on the other side of the map, I think we had about 1hr 45min to get back. Not good because we were really tired and there was still a lot left!!! Just to top that off, there wasn't any water left, so we had to ration the rest of our supply off. Thankfully, there was pretty much only trail running left so it didn't take too much thinking but we did pick up a couple controls on our way back. One of them was right by a really small lake in the bottom of this depression. Our plan was to go down and then go around the hill so that we wouldn't have to climb up 3 contours. Unfortunately, once we got down, we realized that it was sheer cliff going into the water. There's that plan foiled!!! Once we had climbed out of that pit I think we had about 25min left and still 4km to go. Before we had thought that it was all downhill, but once we got onto the trail onto the other map, we realized that it was straight uphill from here!!! I think it was about 18 10m contours in all which was just torture. About 10min before we had pulled over on the trail and taken our last CARB BOOM and I think that's what actually got us back. I ran up the 1.5km of road and got the control right off the trail and by then my Dad and Eric had caught up, so we kept going and then I ran a head again and got the 2nd control off the trail while they caught up. From there it was 350m to the finish and I just gave it all I had left (which wasn't much) but we made it back only 2min late!!! I glad that those 2 controls that I just snuck in were right off the trail because I don't think that I would've been able to much actual reading of the map!!! My dad says I almost killed him on that last hill, but we had to get back some time right??? ;-) I really enjoyed it and to top it all off, we came 1st in the co-ed and 2nd overall just 10 points Benoit and his team!!! Afterwards though, I slept 13hrs but I can still walk which is a good thing... :-) | ||
| C • Awesome! 2 | ||
Wednesday Oct 18 | ||
| running (soccer as well) 30:00 [2] | ||
| Ran some laps down at McKellar Park as part of our gym class, and then got to do some more because a bunch of girls were talking. It was pretty funny because the field was all mud puddles and as people ran through them, I'd hear behind me, "Ahhh!!! Ewwww!!! My shoes!!! *%$@#@!!!" They obviously haven't run through swamps!!! ;-)
After we finished doing laps, we played a soccer game in the mud and I was the only person that could actually run in it, so I just got the ball, ran around everybody, and scored. Pretty sweet... :-)
| C • Well done! 2 | ||
| Note | ||
| Have my first big x-country meet tomorrow, so took it easy after gym although I was planning on going for an easy run, it got too dark too fast. Pumped for tomorrow and ready to get that Ashbury girl!!! | ||
| C • Good luck! 2 | ||
Monday Oct 16 | ||
| school sports (field hockey and run home) 1:00:00 [3] | ||
| We finally won one of our games!!! And I played for all of it, so it must be because of me!!! Hehehe, not really....
We won 2-1 against SRB which was a sweet victory. The bus was really late, so I ended running home really fast to get home for dinner because I was starving!!!!!
Sunday Oct 15 | ||
| running hills (warmup/warmdown) 45:00 [4] | ||
| Since we were up at the cottage, I decided to do the hill by myself which was fun. I think I did it 14times each one about 1min 30sec. The last 2 I really burned it and did 1:20 and then 1:10. Then warmed down with a nice hike through the woods for about 45min. | ||
| C • hills eh? 2 | ||
Thursday Oct 12 | ||
| running race (x-country meet) 15:00 [5]4 km (3:45 / km) vdot: 52.8 | ||
| Had the first x-country meet of the season and I can't say it went very well. We had to take cabs there and I was in a big ruch once we got there because I didn't have a lot of time before I raced. And, there was a big line-up in the bathroom, so I didn't have time to go. I started out pretty well, in the leading pack which is unusual for me. We did 2 loops of flat, uphill, then downhill, and then the rest of the course was flat. I had a good race, except that the WHOLE ENTIRE TIME, I had to go to the bathroom. Another midget girl caught up to me, and I couldn't go at her pace or else I would've peed my pants. Really really annoying. So the meet next week, I'll kick her ass!!!! Grrr, hehe, hopefully anyways!!! Since the gr 9's and 10's were racing together, I came 3rd overall, and 2nd in midget!!! | ||
Tuesday Oct 10 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Recovering from the weekend to be ready for the x-country meet this Thursday. Played football in gym and had a field hockey practise, but nothing very physically demanding. I can't wait until the rest of the class learn how to play football so then we can play some real games. Unfortunately, football season at Nepean is in the spring, so I'll have to wait a while for the school team... | ||
Monday Oct 9 | ||
| orienteering race (o-cross) 1:00:21 [4]*** | ||
| 21c | ||
| Was a really fun course except I made some really stupid mistakes because I was going way too fast. Control 3 on my first 2 maps I messed up pretty bad which cost me a lot of time. By the 3rd map Carol and I were running together so it was super fast!!! It was really nice running although some parts did have a lot of deadfall which made it tricky. When I ran along the trail along the side of the cliff it was kinda scary just glancing at the fields below, so I stayed away from there most of the race. Other than those mistakes, I only made a few little bobbles which is pretty good considering the pace I was going at!!! | ||
Sunday Oct 8 | ||
| orienteering race (long) 1:22:13 [3]**** 8.4 km (9:47 / km) | ||
| spiked:12/14c | ||
| I learned from yesterday, and took it slower through the tougher parts so as not to waste 10-15min screwing around hopelessly in the woods. Control 1 and 2 was really good, nailed them right on!!! Our first long leg to control 3 was pretty good until I got within 5m of the control. Once I got off the trail, I took it really slow checking everything but then I found a control which wasn't mine which really threw me off!!! And it ended up that it was within maybe 2m of the control!!! I ran right past it, but thankfully after about 3min, I said enough is enough and relocated off a swamp. I was a bit worried about 5 because it was mostly off a bearing through a swamp but I found the boulder on the other side and ran right into the control! For 6, I ran farther down the trail because I wanted to know exactly where I was going off the trail just because I've had bad experiences with that, I did get a bit off my bearing, but only lost about 10sec there I think. I started going around the left to control 7, but then decided to turn back and go to the right. It was definitely a very thick, wet and interesting choice. I had to cross a swamp, a "stream" another stream that was practically a river but luckily I found a spot that had tons of rocks to cross. And there was a lot of green, it was definitely very nice to get onto the trail and then spike 7. (Attack point: small dried up pond) While going to 8, I found it hard to read all of the cliffs so I mainly relied on the swamps or atleast what was left of them. 9 was beautiful!!! I ran along side of the ridge and my plan was to run out to the trail if I couldn't find the control in 10sec. Well, that was unnecessary because I practically triped over it!!! 10 was an easy one, and then there was the last long leg of the course. I cut across at the small part of the swamp and as soon as I got to the trail, I started looking for the really small one. Ran that all the way to the next large trail and it was just a trail run for about 800m. Made a bad route choice cutting across the swamp because I really had to fight my way through it was so green. Once I got out of there I mostly trail ran just so I would know which trail I was on the whole time. Cut across along the ridge and then ran right into the control. The rest from there was homefree. Just run towards the music!!! Hehe, almost, still had to make sure I knew where I was or I'd never find control 12 and 13. But after those 2, you could just sprint to the last control and into the finish shoot. Very happy with this race and my placing!!! | ||
Saturday Oct 7 | ||
| orienteering race (middle) 52:29 [3]**** 3.7 km (14:11 / km) | ||
| spiked:8/13c | ||
| I totally bombed this one mostly because I was trying to go too fast, the terrain was pretty techinical, and my orienteering was just sloppy. Pretty disappointing! Spent 13:00min on control 1, not really sure what I did except the I got way off my bearing and was 100m down the trail. 2 and 3 were ok managed to do some pretty good relocation near the control. But then, 5 was a disaster. I was going in the right direction, everything was fine, and then I hit another control that wasn't mine which screwed me up. I thought I knew what the feature was, but for some really stupid reason, I went running off in the wrong direction. Darn it all!!! Finally my race started to pick up and I didn't make any major mistakes after that. The trail network near the very end was deadly and I did lose a couple minutes in there, but nothing serious. The last 2 controls, I wasn't reading my map at all, ok, I guess really rough map-reading, but I guess I was lucky to find them because some people had a lot of trouble. I just kinda ran towards the music hehe! :-) | ||
Middle Course 7a - Splits
Friday Oct 6 | ||
| Event: 2006 North American Championships (Golden Leaf Orienteering Fest) | ||
| orienteering race (sprint) 16:26 [5]** 2.7 km (6:05 / km) | ||
| spiked:13/16c | ||
| Wow, what an intense sprint!!! It was definitely fast and furious like the organizers said!!! It was pretty tricky trying to read the really fine details that really mattered while running or else you'd end up at a dead end. Started out pretty strong and didn't make a mistake until control 5 where I wasted 10sec checking a control number that wasn't mine because I wasn't sure exactly where mine was. Totally messed up 13 because my map was oriented funny and so I wasn't sure which of the 3 identical parts of the building the control was on. I started running around one, then went back and then figured it out. 35sec later which cost me a couple places. Really stupid mistake there!!! Got a bit confused on 15 because I didn't know the control was in the corner by the wall but I still finished pretty strong and I'm happy with my race. I ended up placing 6th in F20-34 | ||
Thursday Oct 5 | ||
| running (x-country) 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| Didn't go too hard at practise today because I had the beep test, a field hockey game, and the NAOC's later on, so I didn't want to kill myself right before. Went down to the beach and did loops, I'm not sure how many, just that we went for about 15min. | ||
| running intervals (beep test) 10:00 [5] | ||
| Did the Nepean beep test which is way different than the Broadview one. The guy talking is really inconsistent because sometimes, the level would end at .8, or sometimes at .10. You could never tell!!! And it was way faster. The first level you were jogging instead of just walking. I made it to level 11 and the second highest I think was 8.6. I had a headache before but I don't think it impacted my run that much. | ||
| Note | ||
| Headin' off to Hamilton tomorrow morning directly after band, (had to fit atleast that in if not x-country). The sprint is tomorrow so I'll time to recover in the car. | ||
Wednesday Oct 4 | ||
| school sports (basketball) 35:00 [3] | ||
| Did some more scrimaging in gym which was a lot of fun. The kiwis went undefeated the whole time until the last game where we lost by one basket. We played so well though and just schooled the other teams. The last team we played had this one girl that would practically jump on you to try and get the ball away. Really scary!!! :-) | ||
Tuesday Oct 3 | ||
| warm-up run/intervals intervals 35:00 [5] | ||
| Went to the Hill for x-country practise which was a lot of fun. Most of us did it 5x the last one super hard. We would run up the hill, across the top hard, then down trying not to kill yourself by being a klutz and falling/slipping/tripping. Then we ran back and I had to play the trombone while being out of breath. | ||
| school sports (basketball) 30:00 [3] | ||
| Did some scimaging in gym class which was a lot of fun. Go KIWI's!!!!!!!!!! | ||
Sunday Oct 1 | ||
| orienteering race 1:42:00 [2]*** | ||
| spiked:6/10c | ||
| This week's meet was at Lac Mulvihill and it was a even thicker than when my dad and I went trainging. It was also pouring the whole time and your first step into the woods got you drenched. It was a tough enough course but thankfully I didn't make any huge flameouts. Just a few bobbles because of my bearing or not being able to see very well.
Control 1 went pretty well, I actually spiked it pretty good. But then 2 was a stupid mistake. THere were 2 other people behind me going to the same control I think so instead of know where I was going in off the trail, I just kind of guessed and then ran up the hill.Not a good idea, I was able to relocate off another control and then find mine but I probably wasted quite a bit of time there. 3 went pretty well, the only problem was not finding the trail that was almost invisible from the road. 4 my bearing got messed up and found this wall although there were 2. Figured it out pretty quick and didn't waste too much time. 5 the contours were very hard to read let alone trying to see through the saplings, but 6 was perfect. After fighting your way through the bush, you'd suddenly come out to this totally open area.It was beautiful!!! ;-) 7 was tricky but I found it pretty well and 8 I was way off my bearing and ended up at the wrong pond, a big mistake, but easy to correct. 9 I got confused with these 2 boulders and had to come out and relocate at the road and then 10 was fine. I got back soaked but atleast alive. :-)
| running tempo 37:31 [3]8 km (4:41 / km) | ||
| Decided to go for another run with my dad since yesterday was a rest day and we went at a pretty good tempo. We did the river run when we could actually see and I'm sure which I like better. Nearly getting run over by bikes, or knowing how much farther you have to go. Mmmm, I think we did a pb for the sprint at the end. 31sec is pretty fast I think although I'm not sure how many m's it is... | ||
