 | running intervals 45:00 [5] | |
| |
| Did a 15min warm-up run, then 5 intervals of 3min hard 3 min off. Did pretty well, although I knew that I wasn't going my hardest. Had a few rather large hills to sprint up which was 'fun' I guess and then a powerline to follow. Finished it off with a 15min cool-down run back on the trail past the geysers. (or geezers and we like to call them :P) |
Monday Jul 30 |
 | running 1:00:00 [3] | |
| |
| Went for a run in the fields of West Yellowstone underneath the moon and with the 'wild' horses. Got some fence crossing practice as well which was fun. |
Sunday Jul 29 |
 | orienteering race (long) 1:53:20 [4]*** 8 km (14:10 / km) | |
| (sick) |
| Still pretty weak, but feeling much better than yesterday and the day before!!! I could actually run today!!! Improvement!!!!!!! Had a foolproof route to control 1 so that I would not get lost even if I tried, and it worked!!! I nailed control 1, and 2 and 3!!! Unfortunately my excellent orienteering couldn't keep up with me for control 4 and I had no idea where I was going. Had fun cutting across all of the trails on the way to 5 and only had a little bit of trouble with 6 cause I had oriented my map weirdly and was on the wrong side of the hill. I had decided on one route to 8, but ended up taking a different, maybe even better one by mistake. The only setback was the wall of green around the control that I was afraid I was going to get stuck in. I was crawling through it on my belly army style and even then it was a tight fit. Did the next 3 controls flawlessly, and then I had a little bit of trouble on 12. I wasn't quite sure where I had gone in from the road, and I was probably about 10m from the control when I decided that I wasn't where I thought I was and wondered around a little bit before coming back to the same spot that I thought I was and finally finding the control. The last controls were kinda boring since they were mostly through the fields, but I found them alright, and finished in 2nd! |
Saturday Jul 28 |
 | orienteering race (middle) 1:03:05 [3]*** 3.7 mi (17:03 / mi) | |
| (sick) |
| This course definitely felt a lot longer than 3.7km, it was almost like a long course!!! Was about an hour late for my start since Eric and Molly had come down with the flu and we took the wrong road, but anyways, that just meant that it was easier to run through the fields with the elephant paths. Really messed up 1and then carried that mistake into control 2. Kinda had to slap myself to start orienteering well, and then was doing well until 11, I was so tired, and all I wanted to do is wander around into all of the depressions to try and find the control. Slapped myself for the second time, and ran out to the trail to relocate and eventually find the control. Almost messed up 12 as well, but came out on the trail by mistake and then went back in to spike the control. The last 2 controls from there were a piece of cake, and I still had a little bit left to have a mediocre sprint in and then amazingly coming in 3rd behind Pam and Victoria. |
Friday Jul 27 |
 | orienteering race (sprint) 22:26 [5]**** | |
| (sick) |
| Felt soooo drained from puking all yesterday so I drank a lot of fluids before and then went uber slow so that I wouldn't collapse out on the campus. It might have been a good thing that I went slower than sprint speed cause then I could read the details much better. Didn't mess up any of the controls but was definitely ready to lie down and go to sleep by the end of the race. |

| Sprint - Splits |
Thursday Jul 26 |
 | orienteering (media event) 22:00 [3] | |
| |
| Did the media event to check out the sprint map. It was really hard to read the out-of-bound areas, uncrossable walls, and the stairs but other than that I just took it really slow and spiked every control. |

Wednesday Jul 25 |
 | orienteering (relocation) 1:00:00 [2] | |
| |
| John took a group of us around woods working on relocation which was pretty tricky. He had us doing loop-the-loops around trees and around hills. I figured out where I was pretty quickly most of the time, and I stumped for a few minutes only once. |
 | orienteering (relay) 25:00 [3] | |
| |
| A one-person relay with 3 maps and I didn't do too badly. Was racing with Graeme and Lee cause we did the maps all in the same order. I messed up 2 on the first map pretty badly and then 2 on the second map as well, but not as bad as Graeme. That's where we lost him, and then I just a lot faster than Lee on the 3rd map. Almost beat Eric, but he had a better route choice to the finish than I did. |
Tuesday Jul 24 |
 | orienteering (line-o and head-to-head) 1:00:00 [3] | |
| |
| I'm totally not sure of the times, but we did a line-o that I did well for 1/2 of it on, and then I totally lost my place and was just following the guys in front of me. Didn't figure out where I was until it was time to turn around, do I just took it sow from there and made sure I knew where I was the whole time. After the line-o a bunch of the guys and I had a head-to-head race for the last 6 controls stopping at the 3rd control to wait for people. I went way too fast for my map-reading speed and I had to slow down to relocate. Definitely a good training exercise though. |
 | running 30:00 [2] | |
| |
| Some running training with Maurene which was really cool. |
 | orienteering 1:00:00 [3] | |
| |
| Just a normal course to work on our o-techniques and Brent shadowed me for the first 3/4 of the course. I don't know if he's lucky or what, but it was my best run on that terrain ever!!! I was choosing good routes and spending almost no time standing at the control. I was flowing soooo well. After he left, I kinda lost my concentration and bobbled the next few controls, but I finally started enjoying the terrain. |
Monday Jul 23 |
 | orienteering 1:00:00 [2]*** | |
| |
| Did a course out on the training map to get a taste of the terrain and I'm not sure if I like it all that much. It's full of underbrush from a storm so pretty much most of the map is green, it was stinkin hot and I was totally exhausted!!! |
Sunday Jul 22 |
 | orienteering race (night-o) 1:05:00 [3] | |
| |
| Was really nervous for the start of this night-o but I didn't go too fast and kept track of where I was the hole time, so I didn't get totally lost at all, just a few little bobbles. |
 | running 1:15:00 [3] | |
| |
| Did some trail running in Riding Mountain National Park really really early in the morning to beat all of the tourists. Did I really nice run along Clear Lake but I found it really tough, blame it on the altitude... :P Got lost in the campground trying to make it back to our site which really sucked cause I was about to collapse by that point. Thankfully, I made it back alive. |
