5 AM

Mtn Bike 2:30:00 [3] 28.0 mi (5:21 / mi)

Citrus Wildlife Area to Fort Island Beach (2 sea)
We started this section with a 1hr 48 min lead over the second place team so our plan was to just keep them in sight. Ron say go and then it is full gas on sandy roads as they try to drop us. Both teams immediately gap the the other teams. Just before cp51 one of their teammates crashes hard on her shoulder and believes she may have partially dislocated it. We help her up and get them settled and then we all continued on at a more reasonable pace.
7 AM

Paddle - canoe 2:00:00 [3] 8.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Crystal River against the wind to the finish.

Trek 3:00:00 [3] 9.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Marshall Swamp Trek
5 AM

Mtn Bike 8:47:00 [3] 50.0 mi (10:32 / mi)

Santos. Fantastic trails. Previous lower pulley repair stops working 30 minutes into this section. We McGyver another repair which barely holds the next 5:30 hours until we stop at Blue Run Bicycles to repair Michele's lower derailleur pulley. No lower pulley for a SRAM XO in the shop so we settled for another sketchy lower pulley from a broken one he had on the shelf.
1 PM

Other 1:00:00 [0]

We ate and rested a bit before starting 4 orienteering loops around Holder Mine campground and surrounding area.
2 PM

Trek 6:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Disaster. 4 orienteering loops. We started with the Orange ~ 30 min
Next was Blue ~ 1:50, Red was about 1:15 then the Green. We did not have to carry mandatory gear on these loops so we were just drinking and eating between loops. So we started out with no water or headlamps thinking this would be less than an hour. Cps 1 and 2 are easy and then an easy 650m bushwack through various green to cp 3 on the backside of some mapped green only its nowhere to be found. Reattack..nope. Try a new attackpoint. nada. Random searching. zip (getting dark now) one more attempt before we have to retreat to the TA for headlamps. zippo. Back to TA. Reload with headlamps and out to attack it from another point. I wait at the attackpoint as Dave and the team push in on the bearing. butkus. Finally as I catch up to the team I find it about half the distance to our measured distance. whew. Slam through the rest of the cps and off the clock at 8:20 pm. A few teams find this point right away but most struggle.
9 PM

Note

Mandatory dark zone until a restart at 5 am. We got our gear ready for the 5 am start, then I got a shower and off to sleep around 10 pm. Cold sleep on and off until 3:30 am.

12 AM

Trek 6:33:00 [3] 13.5 mi (29:07 / mi)

Continued..

Ocala River Forest Camp to Clearwater Lake Campground.
7 AM

Mtn Bike 5:27:00 [3] 52.0 mi (6:17 / mi)

Ocala National Forest
Michele's lower rear derailleur pulley bearings freeze up. We loosen the screw so the pulley spins on the screw instead of the bearings. Loosing time the rest of the race until we get it repaired as she tries not to shift or push too hard.
12 PM

Trek 7:00:00 [3] 19.0 mi (22:06 / mi)

We made this ~5 miles longer than it needed to be. We should have ran the road from the start and pushed through the two water crossings that we trekked around.
7 PM

Paddle - canoe 5:00:00 [3] 16.6 mi (18:04 / mi)

Ocklawaha River paddle and portage.
Awesome night paddle lit by the setting moon and stars. Everyone but me frozen and shaking by the end.

1 PM
