Orienteering race 45:22 [4] **** 5.6 km (8:06 / km)
spiked:8/10c shoes: Inov8 X Talon 212

WA Long Distance Champs at Malmalling. GPS 6.22, pretty straight again.
Nice flat run to 1 on a bearing, but from 2/3 of the distance I could see the spur behind the control. Used a track in middle part of 1-2 before heading uphill. stopped when it looked like I was practically on the spur supposedly behind the control, checked a boulder and realised it was further downhill so went back up and sure enough the control was right on the side of the spur, so Eric had done a poor job with the contours. Track option on longish 2-3 was way too tempting, despite losing height, no problems with control. Bit slow into 4, wanted to be sure on short leg. 4-5 went through the area that anyone taking the other 2-3 option would have had to do, and it was rubbish! Very slow knee-waist high undergrowth. Lost a minute and a half to Anthea on this leg, obviously I can't push through this sort of stuff like I used to. 5-6 was a long leg (1.4km), went fairly straight (found animal tracks downhill through green after crossing the ridge S. of 5), but surprised I didn't lose more time to Anthea here as I had to walk for 200m up a lsight gradient (lacking fitness!). 6,7,8 all straightforward controls. Went a bit wide through pines to 9, then stood around for a while trying to interpret the map. At home with a magnifier I can see there are two little side watercourses neither of which could I see standing in sunlight with sweat in my eyes. Must get the drill out and attach magnifier to compass! another minute to Anthea. Ok on 10, then finish. Nearly 4 mins behind Anthea, but managed to stay ahead of all the M55s. Clean sweep of State Champs (sprint, middle, long) in my final year.

Orienteering race 29:01 [4] **** 3.5 km (8:17 / km)
spiked:10/12c shoes: Inov8 X Talon 212

WA Middle Distance Champs at Malmalling. GPS 3.82km, not too far from straight. First half of 1st leg was along a track, but then it looked tricky across a broad, almost featureless spur. Managed to stay on bearing and hit a form-line knoll just above control. Short compass leg through green to 2. Indistinct track between 2-3 was now very clear so used it to take me within 50m of 3, then used it again to 4, which I could see from 70m away. Short uphill to 5, then a long leg which was fairly straightforward. A large clearing with bare rock midway, then either a saddle or a low hilltop just before the control. My rough bearing took me to the hilltop, no difficulty with control as it was in a large clearing. 6-7 apparently caused a few problems, but I aimed for a small spur with prominent boulders, crossed it then contoured into the control. 7-8 short leg to boulder just below a spur, no problem. 8-9 the direct route was green and rocky so went downhill slightly right and ran parallel to a plantation, good boulder attackpoint and probably got to within 10m of control. couldn't see it or match anything and as it was pretty open I thought I'd come too far into an area of open scattered trees. Started to head back but after 50m still nothing matched, turned around and there it was almost where I'd previously been standing (lost 1 minute to Joe D). 9-10 looked easy, uphill through open to a cliff behind a boulder. Found the boulder, but couldn't see a cliff and stood there for a while, then looked down at my feet and there it was wedged between the boulder and a tiny rock shelf. 11,12, finish all too easy. Fairly pleased with time, beat Joe by 7 secs and 3-4 mins clear of everyone else. Course was easier than it looked, probably could have used some of the more complex stuff to the South.

Running 48:52 [3] 8.8 km (5:33 / km)
shoes: Asics GT 2150

Bridges and Heirisson Island run, quite a warm evening but strong ESE wind. Saw a single kangaroo, sitting by the side of the path at the far SW of the island. Passed within a metre and it didn't even blink, but quite a small one so it wasn't the one I saw last week.
