Orienteering race 32:40 [4] 5.25 km (6:13 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Pursue 2

Metro race at Coogee, picked a route that avoided climbing from the start, but then fell in a hole when I did have to climb after about 2km, and had to walk most of the uphills in the second half of my route. Forgot to start Garmin again, but at least I realised before getting to the first control.

28 appears to be in an out of bounds bush area, with some approaches and exits also out of bounds, but that doesn't seem to have stopped some people. Probably a darker green should have been used for these areas.

It seems the Western routes were shorter, though hillier. My Eastern route: 22,21,20,17,13,14,15,27,26,16,4,5,28 (via the white!),18,29,9,25. Down in 7th because the 'guns' all turned up, though it seems they didn't have great routes.

Orienteering race 31:38 [4] 5.2 km (6:05 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Metro race at Warwick. Had Garmin all set up to start before Ricky's briefing, but promptly forgot it. Noel and a few others got a break on me when I went to the right around the stadium to 1 and had to jump an unmapped fence. Had a look at the course on the way to 2 but only counted 18 in the bushland area so thought I had to get them all. Caught Noel between 2 and 3, and recounted so knew I could drop 2 controls. Ron M arrived at 29 and 3 just ahead of me, with Noel just behind. I thought I could out-navigate Ron and out-run Noel, but wasn't sure who else might have picked a good route. Crossed back across the road to get 8 before cleaning up the rest of the Western section, then saw that the obvious 'leave' was 26, with a choice of 4 and 5 for the other. Decided to get 4 and leave 5, Noel and Ron still around at 4 and then 21 but I sneaked in to punch ahead then hot-footed it to 9 where it seemed they had disappeared. Saw Noel again coming out of 30 but knew I had gained enough, and when I saw Ron ducking in to 28 ahead of me I thought he'd got it. However there was no-one at the Finish and Ricky confirmed I'd won. I'm guessing Ron had dropped earlier controls that I didn't know about. Anthea came in a couple of minutes behind me, and Noel another couple after that.

Route was 1-2-29-3-25-8-23-22-24-10-27-4-21-9-6-30-28-7. Distance a bit of an educated guess.
