biking 1:00:00 [3]
to fathers house and back

Saturday Oct 27

biking 2:45:00
misadventure - was going to join up w/ club ride at Columbia. took Metro to Belleville, then rode almost to Columbia against the wind, decided i was too tired to try to catch the group and turned back. A whole lot of Metro for not so much riding. 25 min. faster back to Belleville. to metro and bike shop included.
running 7:00 [3]
over to wilmore to watch cross country districts

Friday Oct 26

biking 45:00 [2]
to nursing home, shopping. cold drizzle on way in. not too bad, everything had dried out by the time i was ready to ride home.

Thursday Oct 25

biking 10:00 [1]
to bank to deposit checks. fine cold drizzle started ahead of schedule, but it is not a problem if properly dressed for.

Wednesday Oct 24

Note
mild cold, very tired, but feel much better already after 24 hours eating and sleeping therapy

Tuesday Oct 23

biking 2:00:00
Started at 4am in the morning to catch the CTA in Evanston before the 7am no bike rule, so the entire ride was in darkness. Saw a wide range of what Chicago has to offer in the way of riding, some backroads and not so backroads to a paved trail along a powerline right of way that was not very attractive but offered plenty of rabbits darting out in front of the wheel, running for a couple of seconds and zipping back into the underbursh. After a while i figured out that they were doing it for sport, and relaxed.

Then past the Chicago Botanical Garden onto a limestone path with lush grwoth on both sides, then pavement with lots of street crossing, then a fast attractive paved trail along the Metra tracks to the very quiet residential streets of Evanston, and onto the express downtown.

biking 10:00 [2]
then back home along gravel path from metro station

Monday Oct 22

biking 5:30:00
Rode down from Illinois Beach to Lake Forest because the Metra wasn't running, then into forest preserves, met friend and rode more through very attractive forest preserves of 'savannah', wetlands and woods (unfortunately maintained as such by extensive bulldozer and herbicide to take out invasives like buckthorn and honeysuckle)
hiking 30:00 [1]
around Illinois Beach, unfortunately hiking trails were not marked and did not correspond to schematic park map, so there was a lot of walking through parking lot and along road to get to trails

Sunday Oct 21

biking 3:45:00
from the meet hotel to catch 7am mass at St. Patricia's in Hickory Hills just east of the orienteering venue, then to Country lane woods. Then north to the Metra after the meet. Metra to organic restaurant in Evanston, which had some of the best food I have had in a restaurant in a long time, and splurged on wine and vegan chocolate cake etc. Then from Waukegon, after being put off a train because it was too crowded to Zion in the dark having real difficulties picking up things from the bike map (the next day I saw that the bike access was just a little slot in the edge of woods - not really even visible in daytime) and so circling around for quite some time, finally taking the obvious route that I should have taken in the first place, and arriving at Illinois Beach State Park.

Slept in my bag and bivy sack. Ground was hard and lumpy. Skunk and coyote pair pawed at the saddlebag with the food in it, but scurried off when I spoke sternly.

orienteering 1:45:00 [3]
Tough race. Miscalculated one line and fought a lot of briars to control 6. Completely muffed 9, circled around, ran on trail all the way to the start, went back and got it.
running 10:00 [2]
warmup

Saturday Oct 20

Event: Big Blues Ramble 2007

biking 2:15:00 [3]
from Super 8 to Busse Woods O event, and the from meet north to Metra station at Arlington Heights, then from La Grange Metra Station, to a whole foods and the meet hotel
orienteering 55:00 [4]
For the first time, I felt very happy and relaxed at an A meet. Probably some sacrifice of speed and focus there, but I think very beneficial to just enjoy the process first and then work on getting faster and more precise.
running 10:00 [2]
warmup

Friday Oct 19

biking 2:45:00 [2]
Bike to Metro, then after arriving in Chicago via train, to Division Street for organic pizza, then CTA near O'hare airport onto more or less single track paths in forest preserves in big circle around airport and streets to Super 8

Thursday Oct 18

biking 40:00 [3]
nursing home-lotta warm wind
biking 15:00 [2]
spinning around block, making sure front derailleur is working
running 22:00 [3]
ran to Wilmore and back, felt too beat up to make the long trek to Eric's adventure run, but at least finally got out the door in the twilight.

Tuesday Oct 16

yoga 20:00 [1]
biking 10:00 [2]
take recyclables to Wilmore
running 27:00 [3]
then run roughly 4 x 1500 intervals in wilmore terrain with 1 minute rest. roughly 7 min mile pace
C • XC at Willmore 6
biking 1:23:00
to fathers house on grants trail. Swung by Bill L. to trade maps. Then back more direct route - couldn't shift into big ring, even though guy at shop assured me it was fine when i took it back yesterday, so I spun like crazy and attacked the hills.

Monday Oct 15

biking 35:00 [3]
nursing home on cross bike. a little stiff but no working parts afflicted.

Sunday Oct 14

biking race 1:25:00
Cyclocross race at St. Vincents Park near a large incredibly turreted french provincial chateau thats a school or a convent or both just off metrolink stop. So rode to metrolink and then there, on gravel path - nice warm up. Started slowly, tired from the weeks activities, in a big cloud of dust at the start. Then started picking up speed, picking people off one after the other, and getting passed only once, by someone who was lapping the field. Set up well for a sprint on the last lap, still well behind multiple leaders, kept leaning on the turns on the pavement section more and more, and thinking,'boy these fancy tubeless tufos REALLY corner well, when, you guessed it, the tire rolled off the rim, and i crashed on my side. Me and a friendly bystander tried to pop it back on but it was flat, so I ran it in the last lap while everybody passed me. turns out it was a punture flat before it rolled off, so just bad luck, not bad tires.

got this rockabilly tune in my head, "Crashed on Friday, Rested on saturday, Crashed on sunday, keep rolling, keep rolling on." right bruised/scraped hip, thigh, elbow etc. on top of deep right thigh mucle bruise from friday. Left shoulder still sore. Wonder which side I'm going to sleep on tonight.

Saturday Oct 13

running 38:00 [2]
setting out more controls

Friday Oct 12

biking 30:00 [3]
errands
biking 46:00 [3]
to and from JB breaking the monotony with a bus assist. I felt like I was turning into a deer, and wondered what a deer was doing riding the bus.
Yes, I have finally lost my mind.
field checking/mapping 1:45:00
cross biking and running to set controls. i was over the log, at one mile per hour, and then laid the bike over onto my right thigh. the ground sure was hard, deep large internal bruise. so i'll be day-to-day for the cyclocross race on sunday.

Thursday Oct 11

biking 45:00 [3]
to kinkos on grand to print maps for jb, and to meet client at breadco next door

Wednesday Oct 10

field checking/mapping 3:30:00
flagging controls and fine-tuning map. Things seemed much calmer. Pretty day to be out.
biking 1:00:00 [3]
to sweet home JafBayana

Tuesday Oct 9

biking 1:20:00 [3]
bike to JB park, and then to my fathers.
field checking/mapping 2:30:00 [1]
when i got to the technical woods part of some of the courses, nothing made sense. There were multiple sinkholes missing, two different paths which peter out in opposite directions but are shown as one single distinct path on the map, shades of Escher and Midsummers nite dream. Hard to believe that i spent two hours going in circles on this one merely to confirm that its not just me losing my mind. or maybe i am. maybe its just that i've never done mapping before, and when i got in the woods, there was a culture shock. back tommorow to try to sort it out.
biking 36:00 [4]
back home from father's on grants trail on TT bike (and i know how to watch out for the other guy). tailwind, but lots of people on the trail and not hitting the lights.

Monday Oct 8

biking 45:00 [3]
cross bike to nursing home, shopping

Sunday Oct 7

biking 54:00 [3]
to JB park and back
field checking/mapping 1:22:00
pre-running, adjusting courses, finding more map areas that need tuning

Saturday Oct 6

Note
The ultimate training experience: Tossing and turning, not being able to sleep comfortably on my left side because of the sore left shoulder, I had another of the floating/flying dreams which I understand are one of the most common universal dream types. This one had an interesting variation, however, since it was inside, in a crowded cafe (there are often but not always people around to notice that you are flying, I wonder if that adds to the cachet of the dream).

Since I was floating up to the ceiling, and didn't want people staring and whispering about the floating guy, I half pretended to be rock-climbing, and after I started I realized it might actually possible. It felt so natural and good to be doing rock climbing moves that I might have only half-imagined i would be able to do, but felt totally at home with and understood. There was ductwork, sidewalls, pipes cornices, etc. Climbing 5.14+ never felt so easy. Of course, only in a dream would people ignore/accept what I was doing because I was climbing a restaurant ceiling instead of floating across it. Or maybe it was a restaurant in Boulder Colorado.

Friday Oct 5

biking 45:00 [2]
cross bike to nursing home (Mass and peace) but had to crawl through some mental barbed wire to get there. there was a new chain link fence around the upper independant living portion of the nursing home where i cut through on the grass, not serving any purpose as far as i could see, because the drive just had a single chain across it that i could step over. But it symbolized the difficult things in the world, the attempt to exclude others instead of embracing them.

Thursday Oct 4

yoga 30:00 [1]
biking 1:50:00
to Forest Park and back, with stop at bike shop, and cyclocross practice in the park with the gruppo.

Wednesday Oct 3

biking 1:28:00
to and from fathers house to go on a run with sister and have breakfast.
running 42:00 [2]
Chubb trail, very easy, no calf problems. beautiful morning, wish i could get out more (there is a price for everything, i.e. either driving and ruining the beautiful morning for others, or riding and consuming scads of time...but i do plan to take the express bus out to the 141 park and ride early some mornings, that would give me 3 hours of riding and running before the last express heads back to shrewsbury)

Tuesday Oct 2

biking 1:00:00
to JB, tired on way in, chain popping on way back, riding bike:priceless
field checking/mapping 1:10:00

Monday Oct 1

biking 1:10:00
nursing home, camera store and back home, sunny cooland windy. nice.
