before and after race, mostly on fine gravel or gravelly asphalt, hot after the race. us weather said 35, but the car outside air said 42, should have gone w that , lost the 2nd shirt before racing. Cool air on my skin invariably jolts me into faster running...what a fickle runner am I.

5k to benefit a charity that helps people, particularly kids, deal with the loss of a loved one/family member. At Route 66 park on gravel and chip and seal trails and windy asphalt road. First time I've run here too, nice course somewhat reminiscent of Springroll's 5k but w/ more trees and park and no traffic. It was a goal not to go out fast and the first mile was a blazing 7:23. A trio of a mother and her daughter, and another young woman, came up to and then by me at a better pace and I stuck with them. After a while one of the young women started pulling away, I hung with the mother and her daughter for a while while we passed the race leaders. Then the mother edged away from me and the daughter fell back, though I had to fight her off now and then. Near the end a big guy, who turned out to be the leading womans husband? brother? (26 and 36 yr. old respectively), came by me and passed the mother too. I ended up 4th, 26 yr. old female first, then the male w/ the same last name as the winner, then the mother of the girl behind me. To make a long story short, there was some people to run with, and it was fun watching the dynamics.

Obviously I have not suddenly catapulted into a different 5k performance level and I'm actually pretty surprised at how slow it was, but it was a good effort/reality check/rustbuster, and really quite a bit of fun in a number of ways.

warmup at home then on my way to joans sisters easter brunch in St. Chas, got to run on Lost Valley trail for the first time ever! This is a great venue for an uptempo run.

Opted for intensity rather than length. Warmed up a little, then went hard for 20 minutes on gravelly doubletrack w a singletrack section in the middle. after a couple minutes rest, went hard for 22 minutes on doubletrack ending on a huge downhill. Feet were hurting, the front of the wildhorse has little cushioning and the foot ball was sending out danger signals - modified stride. Couple of minutes rest, then pretty hard for 24 min. on a single track out and back and finish on dbl track to parking. Feels like I've slipped into another gear in my training -not sure whats going on but it feels good.
