Sunday Oct 8

Note
Did about 20 minutes of walking & slow jogging before the NAOC Long course. Plus walking around the event center, stretching, etc. The start was really close, maybe 300-400 meters at most.
orienteering race 1:30:48 [4]*** 7.1 km (12:47 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes
Similar terrain to the short distance race, but there was much more opportunity for trail running. Several legs with a good variety of route choices, including one 2 km plus "across the map" leg. Fun course.

Long Course 6 - Splits

Saturday Oct 7

orienteering 40:00 [1]*** 3 km (13:20 / km)
Model area for NAOC Middle & Long Championships. Technical area with subtle terrain. Rocky footing in many places.
trail running 6:00 [2]** 1 km (6:00 / km)
Model area for NAOC Championships.
walking warm up/down 20:00 [1]1.8 km (11:07 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes
Slow walk to the start of NAOC Middle Race, studying terrain along the way.
orienteering race 51:36 [3]**** 3.7 km (13:57 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes
Middle Distance race of NAOC. Complex and subtle terrain. Due to the rocky & brushy nature of the area, I couldn't go nearly as fast as I wanted to. On the few short segments of trail, I really opened it up. The last few controls were in a maze of trails near the finish. Fun race, but I would have enjoyed it a lot more with easier footing in a more open forest. Definitely an appropriate and challenging championship couse.

Middle Course 6 - Splits

Friday Oct 6

Event: 2006 North American Championships (Golden Leaf Orienteering Fest)

walking 1:30:00 [1]** 4.5 km (20:00 / km)
Model area for North American Orienteering Championship (NAOC) Sprint race. McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. Walked around campus using stylized campus guide & model area orienteering map of a small portion of the campus.
orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [1]** 1.5 km (13:20 / km)
very easy pre-race jog and walk through model area immediately prior to the Sprint race.
orienteering race 21:34 [5]*** 3.1 km (6:57 / km)
NAOC Sprint Race on McMaster Campus. A pretty clean race until the second last control when tiredness & sweat on the glasses caused me to mis-read the map & overshoot a control costing 40-50 seconds. Ouch. That let several more finishers slip in ahead of me.

Sprint 4 - Splits

Wednesday Oct 4

trail running 26:45 [3]2.7 mi (9:53 / mi)
Miami Univ. Natural areas. Pine and East Loops. Felt a little tired & didn't want to push the pace or hills with the NAOC sprint just 2 days away.

Tuesday Oct 3

Note
No chance to run, etc today. Got in a little walking, showing guest around the US Air Force Museum & Dayton Art Institute, but no "training" to speak of.

Monday Oct 2

bicycling - stationary 10:07 [2]
Not much free time to do anything today, but I managed to get in a few minutes on a stationary bike. I know some people count "miles" simulated by stationary bike, treadmill, etc, but I've never considered them equal to "real" miles walked or ridden, so I'm not going to start counting them now. I also got in a little slow walking, showing a Russian visitor around Newport Aquarium & Mt. Airy Arboretum, but not really anything worth reporting in detail.
