trail running 1:05:00 [3]6.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes
Greater Cincinnati Trail Runners training run at Caesar Creek State Park. Out and back on Mountain Bike trail north of Harveysburg. Trail was generally dry and in surprisingly good condition. Gerald Yip ran with me for the first mile and a half, then gradually pulled ahead. Mileage is a rough estimate. I'd actually guess it was a bit more.
orienteering 1:32:06 [4]*** 6.03 km (15:16 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes
MVOC "Pumpkin Hunt" at Germantown West. 2nd place on red to Tom Svobodny by about 5 minutes. Beat Steve Noller by a minute and Gerald Yip by 7. Gerald was faster than me on most controls but had a couple major mistakes. I lost a good 32 minutes on #14 looking in the wrong ditch/reentrants, and I kinda bobbled #9, being distracted by the JROTC cadet who asked if I was running red, then tried to keep up while hollering at the top of his lungs at his team-mates who were more interested in sitting on a log and taking a break. I should have just ignored him - he had no chance of keeping up, but it threw my concentration a little.
I really hit the wall the last thrid of the course. The steep hills at Germantown take a toll, especially after having already done the 6 mile plus trail run earlier in the day. I really should have taken it easier on the trail run, gone less distance, and had something to eat immediately after the trail run. Trying to O' at Germantown on an empty stomach does not optimize performance!

hashing 49:00 [3]4.5 mi (10:53 / mi)
Dayton (DH3) Hash Run # 765, Trotwood, Ohio. Mostly wooded paths with some terrain crossing, a short on-road segment, and two wide and calf-deep crossings of Wolf Creek. A fun, well-laid trail. Distance is a very rough guesstimate.

Friday Oct 20

trail running 11:04 [3]1.2 mi (9:13 / mi)
weight:161lbs
Stopped at Indian Creek for two quick loops around the Indian Mound Trail.
walking warm up/down 5:20 [1]0.3 mi (17:46 / mi)
When I finished my run, it was getting dark & I planned to leave right away, but the difference between running in cool air and getting into the much warmer car made my glasses fog. Knowing that it would take several minutes before I could see to drive, I decided to walk back and remove a large branch that had fallen across the trail sometime since last Sunday's O' meet. Hardly worth counting as training, but just like seconds make a difference in a sprint to the finish, I guess it all counts for something.

Thursday Oct 19

Note
The Orienteering class I was scheduled to teach got cancelled due to rain, so my plans to get in some walking & running setting up a white-yellow course got washed out. I ended up spending most of the day sitting at the computer working on sanctioning plans for upcoming OCIN "A" meets & other OCIN stuff. Then a long evening of driving around northern Kentucky in the rain, dodging deer (I had to stop 4 different times including one pretty hard brake-slam) getting Vladimir Zherdev settled in to begin mapping Middle Creek Park.

Wednesday Oct 18

walking 1:03:13 [1]* 3.0 mi (21:04 / mi)
Hiking - scouting area for future O' meets & mapping project (Middle Creek Park, Boone County, KY), with Dick Arnett.

Tuesday Oct 17

trail running 37:46 [3]3.7 mi (10:13 / mi)
weight:163lbs shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes
Garr Hill Trail at Mounds SRA. Felt sore and slow for first mile plus but loosened up and felt much better after that. Heavy rains had ended earlier in the day and conditions were rather wet and slippery, hence the use of my O' shoes for traction and ankle support.
walking warm up/down 4:48 [3]0.25 mi (19:12 / mi)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes
A very short cool-down walk after the training run.

Monday Oct 16

walking 6:00 [1]0.25 mi (24:01 / mi)
Short hike into worksite for Buckeye Trail. crew. We are building new trail (re-locating an on-road section into the woods across private land & state forest) in Vinton County NE of Londonderry, OH.
trail building / maintenance 5:00:00 [3]
Building new section of Buckeye Trail. Mostly did sidehill terracing with pulaski, so a pretty good upper-body workout, with a lot of rocks to dig out. The highlight of the day was the 6-man, half-ton boulder shove. Prying with mattocks and a log, with sheer brute force and willpower, we managed to move a rock larger than many boulders that can be found on midwestern O' maps. At a meter wide, a meter long and a third of a meter thick, it easily outweighed its human assailants, but resistance proved futile, and it now will make a nice seat alongside the trail for tired hikers, instead of a jagged stumbling block waiting to trip unwary trail runners.
walking 24:47 [1]1.4 mi (17:42 / mi)
Fairly brisk hike on the recently completed section of trail. After the work party ended, I intended to drive to nearby Scioto Trail State Forest & do a training run on the Buckeye Trail segment that I maintain (with help from Kyle & Tyler Hertel), but I ended up spending too much time chatting with Garry Dill & by the time I got on the road, the rain was starting & daylight was dwindling, so I headed for home instead.
