Sprint on "The Two Towers" map at John McLaren Park. Another excellent map, but cold rain dampened spirits and fogged glasses, making for a little slower run in this steep terrain. A cluster of 8 closely spaced controls with connection lines going every-which-way provided a maze (and forking) in the middle of the course, and great fun cris-crossing everybody else. Stage 4 of the Golden Gate Sprints.

collected 17 controls from stage 4 and set 13 for stage 5. Ran pretty quick on the collection part since we were in a hurry to get equipment back. Slower on the setting, since nothing was streamered, so I had to double and triple check every location to be sure I got the control in the right place. Fun, but a heck of a wrokout. Stage 5. Shadowed Gavin again. He did much better today, except for one control. If he had not spent more than half of his course time on that one, he'd have ahd a really nice run. Two Towers Map at McLaren Park.

setting and checking controls for Golden Gate Sprint, Stage I. Placed a couple for beginner/intermediate course, then checked everything else. Had to visit quite a few twice because I got there before the setters. Moved one that was badly misplaced. Had a good laugh over the plastic boulder. Golden Gate Park "The Last Herd" map, a great new map by Vladimir Zherdev.

Golden Gate Sprints - Stage 2. Golden Gate Park "The Last Herd" map. Fun sprint. The last control and finish was slightly mis-placed, but visible from a distance, so no lost time.

mix of running and walking in terrain, shadowing (Gavin Smith) on white course. The controls were pretty tough for a kid who normally runs white, and since he's fairly fast, we covered a LOT of ground, but he eventually found all of them without help. Gavin's dad had sprained his ankle while shadowing Gavin on Stage 1, so I offered to follow him on stage 2.

Stage 3 of the Golden Gate Sprints at Land's End / Point Lobos. Within view of the Golden Gate Bridge, this tour included some steep bluffs, a run through the grounds of the VA Hospital, and a few controls in old WW2 fortifications and long vanished AA emplacements. Very cool. Oh, and the temperature was too, especially when exposed to the wind. Fortunately, drizzle held off until we were finished and cleaning up. Started with Zan Armstrong and we had a delightful head-to-head competition throughout. She led to the first two controls, but I passed her on the climb to the trail at the beginning fo the long run to number 3. She stayed close, though, and when I made a 15-20 second blunder on the penultimate, she beat me to the punch by a second. Following her SI 6, my SI-5 was slow to register, and while I tried to chase her down in the sprint to the finish, it just didn't happen. Oh well, it sure was fun anyway!

mapping - field checking 1:30:00 [1] **

Miami - Western. Updating map for TROL Camp and first TROL meet. Minor updates. Most notable is the University has bulldozed a lot of the honeysuckle and underbrush in the narrow strips of woods that run through the campus portions of the map. They've left larger trees, and in many cases teh footing is still a bit rough, but this will definitely open up some new short-cut posibilities. Deer were everywhere.
