walking warm up/down 5:00 [2] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)
Miami Natural Areas with Union County kids from parking to start. Jogged some, walked some - a few of the kids ran the whole way but most were a bit sore from running in PE today at school. Along the way, we ran into a young birder who had spotted Great Horned Owls - an adult in a nearby tree, and a chick visible on the nest in the top of a broken off Sycamore, so we paused for a peek through her binoculars.
Present:
HS - Alex, Jamie, Nathan
MS - Luke, Jordan, Eric P, Nick C, Nate B
orienteering 30:00 [3] ** 2.6 km (11:32 / km)
11c
Ran a 2.6 km (straight line) yellow course, stopping to put up a punch and streamer tape at each control. Didn't look at the map until control 2, at which point I realized that I had taken the wrong map, so I had to place the controls by memory. Unfortunately, I skipped one at a trail/ditch crossing, so a couple of the kids got confused by that.
Eric, Jordan, and Nick started a minute or two behind me, then Luke and Nate a couple minutes after them, then Nathan. Jamie was feeling ill so decided not to run. Alex waited for me to return, then took off as tail-gunner, picking up the control punches and rounding up any stragglers.
The group of Eric, Nick and Jordan did about half the course, then back tracked to return to the start; all of the others finished. Nathan did it more quickly than I got it put out, and then went for an additional jog picking up a few of the declining score controls (paper number pads) that got left in the woods last Monday.
trail running 5:00 [4] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)
Jog back to the parking lot turned into a bit of a footrace with Alex. Once again we were being chased out of the woods as rain got heavier and thunder came closer. I'd already sent the other kids back to the van as they finished.
weights / strength 10:00 [3]
Taking 10' 2x6 and 2x4 off the van roof, sawing, drilling and bolting sections in preparation for Wednesday bridge building project. Actually a lot more than ten minutes - more like an hour, but mostly pretty light work.
