Setting up controls for Trail of Treats.

orienteering race 1:51:00 [4] ***

ICO 2 hour night score O at Eagle Creek East. 23 of 45 controls, with 3 of the 5 "paired control" 3 point bonus, giving a score of 32. Good for second place to Mintore and edging out Aragorn.

Fun course but the rain that had held off all day finally started five minutes before the start, and continued throughout. Light, but cold.

Lost two or three minutes before giving up on a badly misplaced control 42, then finding it on the way to 43 - off by about 100m. I had determined I was in the right place almost instantly, but spent a lot of time scanning around with the headlamp, rechecking the description, looking behind trees etc. since this was one end of a pair, I really was reluctant to give up on it without being absolutely sure that it was nowhere to be found.

Lost another couple minutes figuring out how to get to 14 on the north edge of a pond (very overgrown shoreline, so it was either fight or wade through muck of indeterminate depth.)

Elsewhere, lost a few minutes in few second at a time batches due to rain spattered and foggy glasses, and general inefficiency in handling control punch card and descriptions.

Setting courses for Union County O Club

Present: 14 from the middle school and 4 from the high school.

Experienced kids did a 2.4 km course as hard as can be made (yellowish difficulty) on the school grounds; less experienced did a 1.4 km course also with a few tougher controls. Luke B and Dylan D ram a second 1.8 km course together.

After that, I had the kids form into two teams for a Battle-O style control pickup. (Odd controls versus Even controls).

Billed as a middle, but with more of a classic feel, another race through the steep ridge and reentrant terrain of Taylorsville. Not as steep as Saturday, but still plenty of climb. This was a fun course, with lots of route choice and challenging control placements. Several good orienteers got tripped up into big mistakes and I ended up with a gold medal in M 50.

A fun dinner afterwards with other OCINners at Cocina de Mama in Shelbyville. Highly recommend this south of the border experience.
