Epic fail.
You can orienteer without a compass but not without a map showing the controls.
You can do ARDF without either map or compass, but if your radio receiver isn't working, you're screwed. Unless of course you just cheat and follow somebody the whole way. The thought (and opportunity) did cross my mind, but honour prevailed, and after 40 minutes of trying everything I could possibly do to the radio, while getting drenched in cold rain, I decided "enough" and packed it in.

Follow up note - apparently in replacing a battery before the meet, a wire got pinched and shorted, causing the radio to go deaf. Nothing I could have done in the field to fix it, but I sure should have done one more test after replacing the battery!

USA ARDF championships - Fox O course. Score style; over a km of mindless running each way from start to the first control and from last control to the finish. Otherwise a fun course in the Texas scrub country, with 1 control on top if the only big hill in the area.

Good enough for second place silver medal! Bummer that the 36 seconds between first and second is less than the time I stopped to untie my shoe and pry a cactus thorn out of it.

Note

Long driving day - Oxford OH - Killeen Texas. Drove 900+ of the 1140 or so mile trip.
Lunch in Brinkley Arkansas, dinner with Brach (cedarcreek's nephew) in Lancaster TX.
