orienteering race 55:43 [4] *** 4.0 km (13:56 / km)
14c shoes: Icebug 2020

"long" sprint course at Valley View. Horrible mistake taking the wrong trail toward 2, and after wandering through the "maze of twisty passages all alike", came upon #3, at which point recovery was immediate, and from there on, the map made sense. Judging from splits, this was at least a 7 minute mistake. Like many, I spent a little extra time playing in stinging nettles looking for the slightly misplaced #8, but I lost less time there than many others. Made a stupid wrong turn going to 13, which again cost perhaps a minute; the constant frightfully loud and close shotgun reports from the gun club just across the creek definitely not helping the concentration!

road running 1:06:37 [3] 6.0 mi (11:06 / mi)
shoes: AW white

Cloudy and breezy morning, but humid. Intended to do a long run, and not push too hard, but got more than I bargained for with the heat and humidity. I procrastinated too long before heading to the park, and just after the turnaround at mile 3, the breeze slackened, the sun came out, and was merciless for the remainder of the run. I felt stiff and slow from the beginning. After the turnaround, with the sun, I was definitely worried about getting too overheated and pushing too hard, and at some point after 4.5, decided that I would stop at 5.5 and walk the last half mile as a cool down. (deer flies were a good motivator not to stop sooner than that!). Somehow I missed the 5.5 post and at about 5.6 realized that I was well past it. Stopped and started walking, but after 30 seconds, decided that the end was close enough to run the rest. Forced myself to keep walking until a full minute had elapsed, then back to a slow run for the remainder. Felt really beat and on the verge of throwing up when I finished, definitely not one of my best days!
Miles: 11:22, 10:59, 10:32, 11:20, 10:56, 11:29.

Saw a box turtle crossing the road (car-free "trail", and nobody else around, so it didn't need rescuing), a fence lizard, and an immature bald eagle.
