Orienteering race 51:37 [3] 6.5 km (7:56 / km) +205m 6:52 / km

Final NGOC League 2014 at Parkend.

Felt a bit rushed at the start and had to go before GPS had located.

Worried I was running a bit blind on 1, but hit it dead on. 2 fine. I got confused around 3 as the paths didn't seem to match. Found some platforms with no controls then carried on and found some more platforms with a control. Saw Pete Ward exiting 3 which was a shock (I assumed he'd be half way through by now). Lots of people wandering around at 4. Pete Ward, Steve Green and my dad. Pete eventually located control and raced off. I crossed the valley higher than I intended on the way to 5, but found it fine. Slow but steady 6,7 and 8. Spotted Pete again coming out of 9! He was gone by the time I emerged. Then as I approached 10 he was standing looking at the map. POW! Joe was in the lead. 11 was on a dubious feature. 12 and 13 had motorways carved in the bluebells. I was too low on 15 and Pete caught me and raced off. 16 seemed too close to the fence so I slowed up. I thought 17 was another courses control so I nearly ran straight past. Saw Pete again hesitating 30m short of 19. I over took again! Was I really going to beat Pete Ward? How could this be possible? This is a man of 17min 5 kilometres! I felt quite pleased and let him speed off on the run in. My mistake because I got 2nd place as Mark Burley took 20 secs or so out of me on the run in to beat me by 4 secs!

Still, I felt like I gave Mark a worthy opponent in the league overall and beating Pete on one event makes me realise it's possible.
