Orienteering 34:32 [3] 6.4 km (5:24 / km) +125m 4:55 / km

HOC Malvern Common Summer Evening

Scrappy run. I wasn't really thinking. Started off running half way to the final control before I realised I was going backwards. Mostly my own fault, but weird start/finish arrangement. The course tried to make the most of a fairly uninteresting area. Still, at least it was mostly running on grass. It's amazing how different you can feel from day to day. Yesterday, I felt weightless and today, sweaty and bleary.

Orienteering 45:00 [3] 6.0 km (7:30 / km) +315m 5:56 / km

SWOC Evening Score at Cwm Lickey.
I think Cwm Lickey is a great place and it was beautiful today. Didn't go very fast was thinking tactics and wondering if I'd started off in the wrong direction. Messed up one control and went back as I'd overshot. Was just enjoying running about in a complex landscape. I think I got 16 controls, I don't know how many there were. Went around Mark's tough Yellow course with a nice girl from Cardiff to collect controls.

Orienteering race 1:07:09 [3] 6.7 km (10:01 / km) +390m 7:46 / km

MWOC Nash Woods

Probably took the wrong route to 1 as I started running down the path before looking at my map properly. Slightly misleading as the best route would have been to run back through the start boxes. Approached 1 from below and took a while over it. Hit 2 fine. Just looking at 2-3 made me feel a bit weird. Basically the leg was the lowest point, to the highest point. 140m roughly. Made a slow ascent noting unmapped earth features. The area around 3 seemed heavily featured but mostly unmapped, which made it fairly tricky. Saw Alice Bedwell who seemed to have had similar problems. descent from 3 was horrible. Stones under moss under heather. No sign of the indistinct path. 4 was fine. I couldn't match up the vegetation crossing from 4-5, especially the open scattered trees which seemed a different shape. Bingoed 5. Again the vegetation mapping climbing to 6 was unhelpful. Enjoyed 6-7. was too high at 9 and overshot. There was an unmapped hide between 10 and 11 and the mapped ruin appeared to be a garden shed that had partially fallen over. 15 was too close to the path, but was very obvious.

I quite liked the area, but then I pretty much like all steep woods. A few map updates and I'd go back.

EDIT: The anti-Joe result amendment conspiracy continues. I think as soon as someone spots that I have some good splits over proper orienteers, they void my good splits. I don't have a clue whether 5 was correct, but it wasn't a long way off. Once again destroying myself thrashing uphill gets wiped away, I just hope the reinstatement of runners gets some ranking points but with the 4 and half min gap between Adam and myself it now looks very unlikely.
