Wagga Trail Marathon, 2.56.18 It was a new course since the old one was flooded along the river, this meant nearly twice as many hills which i wasn't looking forward too. The course was great with mostly fire trail but lots of singletrack too, undulating hills, some mud, steep gully crossings and a very low tunnel under a train line. Started out together with Grant at spot on 4min km which was the plan, Grant got away a bit once the hills started after a few km and it wasnt too long till we were 1 and 2. Went through 10k in 41min a few hundred m behind Grant. He gradually pulled away on the hills esp out in pomigalarna which had the biggest and steepest hills, and not very good k markings since it was all new course. Got the message i was 2.30 down on Grant at about 26km and didnt see him much after that. Dont know what time i had through 20k but at 30k i was 2.03 which means that i was averaging 41.30 for the 2nd and 3rd 10ks. When i realised this it spurred me on a bit since i felt like i was really struggling and had in mind jases warning about the last 10k. From here to the finish i just concentrated on polishing each km off, took gels every 30min from about 55min and in between took sports drink which helped a lot. About 37km i was stil moving along pretty well - just over 4min km on the flat sections and knew i would get under 3.00 but the last 4km down hill and along the flat were a real struggle. very glad to get to the finish. Grant must have finished well cos he was nearly 7 min in front of me in 2.49 which is way under the old course record and this was a tougher course.
