Running 5:30:00 [3] 22.0 km (15:00 / km) +1167m 11:51 / km

Long run/walk out in the tinderrys.

I have always wanted to go up here after driving past so many times and with nothing much planned for the weekend john and I decided we'd do it. About an hour or two later it started snowing in Canberra so it wasn't that surprising that when we got up there sat morning there was snow everywhere and it was minus 3.
Given the snow and ice we could see on the big rock slabs on the ridge we decided to do the loop in reverse to the original plan. This meant running down the east side of the range and then heading north on fire trails with a few big climbs.

It was spectacular forest with the snow and some huge boulders particularly around bluebell swamp where we left the ft and headed into the bush.

The first stretch through the bush went pretty well with quite open forest and enormous boulders. After about an 2.5hrs (1hr in forest) we were getting close to the top. The last part to the top involved some scrambling over huge boulders which would have been pretty fun normally but was pretty dicey with ice and snow coating the boulders. As we got onto the final rocky ridge we looked across to see two wedge tailed eagles gliding only 50m away which was a real highlight. After writing our names into the log book we headed north to come back on the ridge.
We would normally have tried to find the rocks but on the downhill south slopes they were a bit dangerous with the coating of snow and ice.
This meant that the first part of the way back was a bit of a battle avoiding cliffs and pushing through the scrub. The second half of the ridge had a lot more open rock and on the northen slopes the snow had mostly melted and this section was really fun and very spectacular. Looking south it looked like the desert with the red rocks and blue sky but looking north it was completely different with all the rocks coated in snow. On the last hill down to the car we saw a little herd of goats. After that we just had to slide down a last few rock slabs and then bash through the last section of wattle regrowth to the car.

Awesome day out, will have to go back when it's a bit warmer and do it in the reverse direction.
