Walking east on High St., Pat and I spotted a person walking and gesturing in an odd manner and travelling east also on the opposite side of High from us. I at first thought that it was a petite woman, but Pat accurately described the person as a young male around 10 years old. We continued watching him until he walked into the gutter.

After a brief discussion we determined that it would be best to call 911. While I was on the phone with the police dispatcher, the boy darted into the street and walked down the center of the street. I stopped the light eastbound traffic, and we herded him to the east side of High and onto the sidewalk. He continued east, but at this point we could see that he had a knife in his hand and was wearing just a T-shirt and a diaper. He crossed MLK with the WALK light in his favor, but he was oblivious to its presence or significance. We managed to corral him into the McDonald's lot because he had attempted to go east again under the railroad overpass, thus putting himself in close proximity to traffic again. In a very short time two police cars arrived and took control of the situation.

We found out that the boy was not only non-verbal, but that the weapon he carried was a butter knife. Hopefully, he will be better-watched and cared for in the future.
