Touring Bike race (Gravel/mud/pavement) 3:45:00 [4] 70.0 km (18.7 kph)
Garmin Connect and I didn't get along tonight and today's ride didn't sync and vanished off my watch
Cool enough to start the day but the wind wasn't too bad so I wore 2 long sleeve technical tops and a thin jersey, tucking my jacket in my Camelbak before the start. We knew the first km or so would be a zoo so I hung back and to the side (loose gravel). Nice line along the first stretch of rail trail and traded pulls with a fellow a couple times, which was more common today than in any other time I have done this race. Farm lane, wee bit of pavement, gravel, farm lane around an orchard, more gravel, more farm lane, good rail trail, ATV trail on old rail line, mountain bike stuff a couple or three times, epic mud chute (rumour has it water was added yesterday since it was too dry), more mountain bike stuff, then that mother of a hill climbing up to the Ancaster Community Centre with 22 percent grade. AND I MADE IT UP! Yes, I used my granny gear, but I also rode that heavy steel bike the 69 km before that (well, I carried it through the mud chute).
Bummer: a half dozen trees had been recently cut down and had fallen on the ATV rail trail by Harrisburg, which created a 20 minute bottleneck (WandAR timed it: I ate a granola bar and tried not to get too peeved). Sabotage?
I-haven't-seen-that-before: a fellow taking a break, smoking a funny smelling cigarette part way through
Hat's off to: the unicycle rider and the parent/young child combo on the tandem fat bike
Don't try this at home: stupid long work hours all week, poor nutrition all week (I don't eat much when work is chaotic) and being so hyped up about the record pace that spring fertilizer season hit us that sleep quality was oddly poor and definitely lacking in the quantity department. Then add in a 4 am fire alarm at the hotel the morning of the race.
All in all, 15 minutes faster than last year, and would've been a lot better than that without the bottleneck. And I am so stoked about making it up the final hill. Time to retire from this event :).
