Adventure Bike (gravel, rail trail) 2:30:00 [3] 32.4 mi (13.0 mph)

a) this spring sucks for getting crops planted down here in the deep SW of Ontario because it keeps raining
b) the month of May has provided some great opportunities for riding bikes since I don't have to work as many crazy hours as usual
c) I have only worn shorts and a short sleeved shirt biking twice this year.....that includes during our week in Florida
d) 30 C / 80 F temperatures in Kansas in two weeks are my worst fear (other than rain/thunderstorms/mud.....which is a well-founded fear)

Since we didn't have to work today, I took my bike up to Fergus to The Bicycle Tailor for a quick check, and an oil change. Technically, it isn't ready for an oil change yet, but I know it would make me feel better knowing that I was running fresh oil in my internal gears. I would have done it myself, but I hadn't gotten around to ordering an oil change kit yet and to my surprise, Amazon thought it would be 10 days - 2 weeks before one would get to me. The bike mechanic also provided some helpful insight into the annoying (to me) clicking/clunking noise that triggered me to change the BB.

Rain had been in the forecast for the day, and started in earnest when I was changing into biking clothes in the porta-potti at the Fergus trail head of the Elora Cataract rail trail. Sealskin socks and my Shower's Pass rain jacket saved the day. I was a happy rider as I headed towards Orton. The change in flora and fauna and topography from around home put a smile on my face. As did my lunch break among the trilliums. At Orton, I got on some of the hilly gravel roads I had ridden at the end of July. The rainy/misty conditions triggered some day dreaming about another bike tour in the UK. I got to use a few different gears as I rolled up and down the most and the biggest hills I have ridden since Barry Roubaix.

Very quiet roads.....I may have met 2 vehicles. Everyone was probably hiding inside, given the weather. Other than 2 guys fishing in a stream. I got back on the rail trail at Belwood C.A. and there were a few others fishing/walking/biking.

Back in Fergus, I went back to the bike shop and gave the mechanic the thumb's up on the bike and he gave me a maple bacon butter tart. What's not to love?

Note

Due to the complicated nature of the transaction, the closing date for the sale of our crop input and grain business in Ontario has been post-poned from June 30 to sometime in July/August.

So the uncertainty continues......

Adventure Bike 3:04:00 [3] 41.74 mi (13.6 mph)

Sweet gravel ride after work. Up through Fletcher, towards the Thames, back down towards Buxton, then Merlin for a snack (not on the clock) then back to the office just south of Tilbury.
Some smooth gravel, some freshly graded gravel.
Just enough wind to make me drop a gear or two when heading into it.
And muddy fields all around (which is why I could ride til 8 pm, as opposed to working til 8 pm).
Shorts and short sleeves! Put the arm warmers on for the last 30 minutes.

Adventure Bike long 9:48:00 [3] 107.5 mi (11.0 mph)

Moving time was about 8hr 18 min. There was a stop for ice cream in Merlin, and a few stops for wardrobe adjustments as it warmed up.

Paul and I headed to Leamington then the north side of Point Pelee and Hillman Marsh. We were caught in an unexpected rain that soaked my gloves and knee warmers (I have more appropriate ones, but didn't wear them as rain wasn't in the forecast). After 20-25 miles, Paul opted to go home as he was more poorly equipped than I was. I carried on into Kent County, riding some sloppy gravel roads. Ice cream at Merlin hit the spot. The sun came out occasionally along here and I cranked my tunes.

I had seen a rain gauge back closer to Wheatley with 2.7" in it, and we had 2.4" at the office. There won't be much field work locally for a week.

I got on the rail trail near Comber and rode south of Staples. There were 4 wheelers parked on the rail trail and then they rode on the trail, bypassing me by ducking into a field. Naughty naughty naughty. Then I worked my way south, with a diversion on the gravel South Talbot Road. The McCain took me home.

A very good ride. Again, pizza was a highlight in the food department. And the ice cream, of course!

2 coyotes just outside Kingsville. 2 sandhill cranes up by Staples (only the 2nd and 3rd ones I've seen in Canada, although I've seen many in the US, and actually heard them last Saturday near Timmins), yellow warblers, assorted ducks, and a woodchuck who just about ran into my bike....things you see when you don't have a video camera running!.

Note

I procrastinated on ordering new bifocal sunglasses. But finally bit the bullet and coughed up the dough to replace the ones I haven't seen since we were in Florida in March. Guess what I found this morning.
