Had a free weekend so entered the Cursa de Bombers 10km round the centre of Barcelona, mainly because I thought it would be good fun to ping it round the closed streets with 7000 runners on a Sunday morning, and any nice time would of course be a nice bonus. Arrived at the start with 35mins to go and saw the worrying large queue for the bag-check. At another race I might have just hucked my stuff into a bush, but decided maybe not in the centre of Barcelona. Waited it out, and saw the next (and in retrospect, predictable) issue of the large toilet queue. However this was fairly non-negotiable so waited it out too as I got progressively more panicked.

In almost perfect dramatic timing, as I exited the toilet I heard the speaker announce that the first wave was off, and so I boosted thought the crowd, squeezing past the later waves and literally just made it across the start line in contat with the crowd but as literally the last person in the group and thus the race consisted of overtaking around 3000 runners. Thing could have been much worse as the streets were mostly pretty wide, although did have to make a few lateral moves in the first km, so a lot of the problem was also judging quite how to pace it (which looking at the trace I did not too bad a job I think). Passed the 40min pacer at about 2.5km and the 37min pacer at about 4 and gradually the rate of overtaking slowed until I actually had a solid head-to-head race with some guy from 9km to the finish.

Crossed the line with the clock showing just over 35mins, but with a chip time of 1:05 less than the gun time, just manged to sneak under 34. Probably could go a bit quicker with some better pre-race organisation on my part (although maybe that would have just lead to a faster start and a pop?), but at any rate I had a great time during the race so for sure I'm happy with the whole outing. Seems to be about one race like this every month or so, so it's pretty likely I'll do another one in short order
