Pentlands Skyline

The start was initially delayed by 45mins which only prolonged the pain of waiting for the pain to come. On the first climb could see it bottlenecked after a bit so put in a bit of effort to avoid waiting. Stuck with the people I was with, trying to find the right balance of pushing on and not using all my energy.

Stuck with the same HBT guy through the first section of hills, through Flotterston before dropping him up Turnhouse. After that just kept going, still ahead of Ali and Tim, sticking behind a group of guys. Began to die over the Kips and Ali caught and insta-dropped me when I had a right faff filling up my bottle at the drinks stop.

Pushed a bit round the road and up the next hill to catch 2 guys and then promptly dropped then on the terrain descent. Alone now, went for the route up Black hill that Bash took us a few weekends ago. About half way up saw the 2 guys I'd just dropped ahead. Did a bit of rage running to recatch them as we summited: dropped around 1:30 due to a crummy route. Also had a look behind: still not Tim but there was a big group closing that included the first woman.

Re insta-dropped the 2 guys on the down before an absolute slog up Bell's hill. Really struggling now but still pushed on; really didn't want to get beat by the first woman. Made the slowest catch of my life up the next hill to a guy bonking hard, before a painful decent.

Last big climb up Allemuir was bad. Knew she was catching me but didn't want to look. Dan at the top gave some motivation and laughed as I tried to explain my new aim. Killer final descent as I bonked hard, also managing to lose the path at one point but finished a solid 26th: one position ahead of the first woman and one behind Ali (about 70 seconds down). Not saying I'd have definitely beat him if it wasn't for Sasha's route up Black Hill, but... Also, pretty gutted to find out I wasn't even the fastest Thomas Wilson in the race.

A real slog fest from about half way and was in terrible pain by the end, but really glad to have done it. All in all, a good day to die hard.
