SOL1 - Darnaway

Another mixed bag. Started off with maybe 12 of the best orienteered controls Darnaway has ever seen, but then came lucky number 13; I don't want to say that the map was wrong and that was the only reason I made a mistake, but the map was questionable and it was a significant factor in why I screwed up. Got near the control, didn't see it because the 'hill' it was on was very meh and nothing around it fit, and then ran about in the area still not making anything fit. Could have easily lost much more time if Stanwix hadn't rocked up and showed me where it was tucked in the heather. Binned pretty much exactly 4mins.

As I came out the control, saw TomL approaching into the control making that 4min catch. Zoomed off fairly well though (apart from a wobble at 19 where the flag was tucked behind a bush and I didn't have enough conviction, so went for a loop of surrounding bushes), and powered on well to the finish, with the full catch never being made, but with a few glances on dogs-legs and the like.

But yeah, other than those two controls, it was probably some of the best orienteering I've done in a while, so I'm not overly sad about it. Plus, it's still a great area which was great fun to run on.

Genuinely the thing that annoys me most is that I captained myself in my EUOC fantasy team for double points, and all I got was a lousy 4th.

Little Roseisle relay with EUOC and the BOF Squad. Tried a bit, cruised a bit: all very good fun.

Lots of confusion on how much to wear as the weather went through several extremes as I warmed-up. In the end think I got the number of layers right, but forgot my description holder in all the confusion which was annoying, but did give me a lot of good origami practice during the race.

Scottish Nights - Findhorn

Full speed, full mistakes.

A lot of the run was very good and went round sweeping up various EUOC boys, but also was just making bad mistakes every few controls (5, 12, 19, 26, ...) resulting in binning a fair chunk of time. First time I've done any night-o outside the Edinburgh bypass for almost exactly a year, so makes sense that the nav was a bit rusty, but still, make a lot of extremely rookie errors and let an old man win the trophy, so have to be a bit miffed.

Some pretty stressful last few days due to 3 big deadline due today, plus a rather last night yesterday, has resulted in my brain feeling very much like a potato stuffed with cotton wool all day today. Got out for a nice zoned out Braids plod to clear thing a bit, but mainly just think I need to sleep. On the plus side, legs felt pretty okay.

Apparently sending a large group of EUOC boys to race at high speeds around the Exchange and surrounding housing, right at home time on a dark Thursday evening can quite annoy a selection of pedestrians, drivers and local residents.

Very good fun running it though. Enjoyed driving the train on a few rough routes early on, but once the loops started everyone spread out a bit and it became a solo grind to the finish.

Popped back to the flat to disk out some kit, and then a nice Meadows lap.

Another fully packed day, but just about got this in. Enjoyable stuff though; felt like I was moving okay and was mainly just nice to be outside.

Watch alarm went and got straight out of bed (as I find the amount of time spent in bed after alarm goes ∝ likelyhood of not getting out of bed), got ready pretty quickly and got outside. Thought it seemed quite dark and quiet, but put that down to the grim weather and thought nothing of it.

Then after 20mins, while I was nicely spaced out, out of nowhere my watch alarm goes off; causing me to have minor freak-out and get extremely confused, as I suddenly got the overwhelming feeling I was still asleep and in the middle of a rather boring dream (or potentially there was some sort of Inception situation going on?). Either way, it was a very odd (and quite unique) feeling for a few moments.

Anyway, realised I must have just woken up around 30mins early, just assumed (dreamed?) my alarm went off and jumped out of bed without checking my watch at any point (although at the time would have bet substantial money that both of these had happened). Did mean I got to go back to bed for a bit after getting home though which was nice.

Trail Running warm up/down 10:26 [2] 2.93 km (3:34 / km) +30m 3:23 / km

In the lab until about 6:30, but a F1 pit-stop style visit to home meant I was hopefully of maybe just catching a EUOC rep or two...

Trail Running hills 34:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (12:00 @4) + (2:00 @5) 5.28 km (6:26 / km) +287m 5:04 / km

Made it just in time of the last EUOC 30s rep, so proceeded to do;
30s [2mins], 4x 3mins [3mins], 3x 30s [2mins]
Very slippy and windy and grindy and lonely all the way. During the session, cooked up about 8 or 9 good excuses why 4 reps was plenty, so just did that.

Slushy Seat lap with Dan. Seat was looking very sexy - all covered in a light dusting of snow - but gave going up a miss as probably didn't have the required level of grip.

Callum was very excited to "have a go on the wall that's entirely made out of wall".
