Orienteering race 1:02:25 [4] *** 4.1 mi (15:13 / mi) +397ft 13:57 / mi
ahr:154 max:179

Green course at Terrace Oaks. Not a great race for me. Foggy glasses plus the thick vegetation meant that I couldn't see anything from control 5 to 10. I wandered around 6 for awhile, missed a trail on the way to 7 and had to double back, mistakenly took an unmapped trail to 8 and overshot it, and searched the wrong hilltop at 9.

Distance is a little bit of a guess, because I didn't start my watch until partway to the first control.

Orienteering race 45:44 [4] ** 2.97 mi (15:24 / mi) +291ft 14:05 / mi
ahr:145 max:173

Well, that sucked! Yellow course at Terrace Oaks. Even now that I can see exactly what I did, it still doesn't match with what I remember seeing in the woods. I was cutting from one trail to another (about 10m, that I had already crossed during the green course). Somehow, I changed direction within that 10m, and went on a long detour. I quickly realized that I had taken a bad turn, so I adjusted and kept going. I must have adjusted in the wrong direction. By the time I finally came out to a trail, and then finally figured out what trail it was, I got to do the trail-to-trail crossing again--no problems the second time around. Overall, I spent nearly half of my overall time on a single control.

After that, the rest went smoothly, except that my knee started hurting, and I walked the last 4 1/2 controls. I had asked a lot more of my knee than it has been accustomed to lately.

NOTE: I rated the course as "Easy" for technical intensity, because despite my massive screw up, it was pretty simple navigation.

Score-O at Interstate State Park (WI). I barely arrived in time, and the maps had already been distributed. Not much time for route planning, but I planned my first few controls as we walked to the start, and figured the rest out on the fly.
